Called my congressmanβs office around 4:15 and kept that poor staffer on the line until office closing time, pretty much asking why my Rep wasnβt protecting his constituents. Even with the length of the call, I kept the conversation constrained to the following three topics The local VA hospital is losing 20% of its staff (100 jobs), and the USDA research office has been shut down. What is the congressman doing to fight for those jobs? Oil and cotton (2 biggest exports) are subject to Chinaβs retaliatory tariffs. Oil prices have plummeted, and the rig count has gone down. What is he doing to fight for those vitally important West Texas export industries? Trump said he wants to send US citizens to foreign prisons. What is he doing to protect American citizens? Asking those three questions in such a way seemed to put the staffer on the back foot because the underlying assumption is that all of them are worth fighting for, which the staffer ultimately agreed with and stated that the Congressman supported vets, jobs, and citizens. I asked why the Congressman was silent on those three important items of local interest and got a response that βheβs been traveling a lot and has been busy,β which was obviously an attempt at a nonresponse. However, I continued to push and finally got the staffer to say that the Congressman would 100% draw a red line at the deportation of Americans and told him, βThen, the Congressman needs to make a statement to that effect, because people are scared.β I donβt know if any of this will make a difference, but I felt somewhat better afterward. And, to be honest, the staffer did genuinely seem to agree with all of the above, promising to send word to the office in DC that my Rep should make a clear statement that he is opposed to the deportation of American citizens. The local staffer also admitted he had already personally fielded several calls today from US citizens in this very conservative district who are concerned about Trumpβs deportation threats that were issued yesterday. I told the staffer this goes way beyond any traditional understanding of Conservative vs. Liberal βpoliticsβ and is a fundamental threat to the kind of American democracy that weβve always known. It took some back-and-forth and some hemming and hawing, but the staffer eventually agreed that the Congressman should make a statement to that effect and would send a note to DC that he should do so. Obviously, Iβm not holding my breath that my Congressman will actually issue that statement, but it was at least a start to get a true-believer staffer for a very conservative congressman to admit these things are actual threats to the fundamental concept of liberty. Maybe the staffer is a good actor/liar, but I feel like a seed of doubt was planted. Iβm going to keep at this shit, get to the point where I know these staffersβ names and voices for when I call, and make some fucking noise. You guys are all really smart and make good arguments. Light up the phone lines, use your degrees, and speak about shit in concrete ways that directly tie the insanity to your local community. Stay focused and on point. In this small town that voted 80% for Trump, thereβs word circulating that a small cadre of brave locals, who are willing to put their social standing at risk, is planning a protest in front of the VA hospital in rural fucking West Texas. Small progress.

Iβm not sure why the goats are a point of confusion. Itβs heavily implied that goat sacrifice is a thing that seems to be related to the ritual of βretiringβ innies on whom theyβve been experimenting, which is apparently commonplace enough that Lady Brienne clearly had gotten sick of it enough that she didnβt want to play any further role. This widespread practice raises other questions: Who the hell have the other MDR team members been trying to divine their tempers? How many are there? Are we going to see them escape, too? What would be the implications if word got out to the wider public?

Palestinian teenager who died in Israeli prison showed signs of starvation, medical report says TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) β Starvation was likely the leading cause of death for a Palestinian teenager who died in an Israeli prison, according to an Israeli doctor who observed the autopsy. Seventeen-year-old Walid Ahmad, who had been held for six months without being charged, suffered from extreme malnutrition, and also showed signs of inflammation of the colon and scabies, said a report written by Dr. Daniel Solomon, who watched the autopsy, conducted by Israeli experts, at the request of the boyβs family. The Associated Press obtained a copy of Solomonβs report from the family. It did not conclude a cause of death, but said Ahmad was in a state of extreme weight loss and muscle wasting. It also noted that Ahmad had complained to the prison of inadequate food since at least December, citing reports from the prison medical clinic. Ahmad died last month after collapsing in Megiddo Prison and striking his head, Palestinian officials said, citing eyewitness accounts from other prisoners. Israelβs prison service said a team was appointed to investigate Ahmadβs death and its findings would be sent to the authorized authorities. The autopsy was conducted on March 27 at Israelβs Abu Kabir Forensic Institute, which has not released a report of its findings and did not respond to requests for comment. The Ahmad familyβs lawyer, Nadia Daqqa, confirmed Solomon, a gastrointestinal surgeon, was granted permission to observe the autopsy by an Israeli civil court. Widespread abuse in Israeli prisons, rights groups say Rights groups have documented widespread abuse in Israeli detention facilities holding thousands of Palestinians who were rounded up after Hamasβ Oct. 7, 2023, attack ignited the war in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Authority says Israel is holding the bodies of 72 Palestinian prisoners who died in Israeli jails, including 61 who died since the beginning of the war. Israel often holds on to bodies of dead Palestinians, citing security grounds or for political leverage. Conditions in Israeli prisons have worsened since the start of the war, former detainees have told the AP. They described beatings, severe overcrowding, insufficient medical care, scabies outbreaks and poor sanitary conditions. Megiddo Prison, a maximum security facility where many Palestinian detainees, including teens, are held without charge, is regarded as one of the harshest, said Naji Abbas, head of the Prisoners and Detainees Department at Physicians for Human Rights Israel. Israelβs prison service said it operates according to the law and all prisoners are given basic rights. Ahmadβs lawyer, Firas al-Jabrini, said Israeli authorities denied his requests to visit his client in prison, but three prisoners held there told him Ahmad suffered from severe diarrhea, vomiting, headaches and dizziness before he died. They suspected it was caused by dirty water, as well as cheese and yogurt prison guards brought in the morning and that sat out all day while detainees were fasting for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the lawyer said. Malnourished and frail According to Dr. Solomonβs report the autopsy showed that Ahmed likely suffered from inflammation of the large intestine, a condition known as colitis that can cause frequent diarrhea and can in some cases contribute to death. But medical experts said colitis usually doesnβt cause death in young patients and was likely exacerbated by severe malnutrition. βHe suffered from starvation that led to severe malnutrition and in combination with untreated colitis that caused dehydration and electrolyte levels disturbances in his blood which can cause heart rate abnormalities and death,β said Dr. Lina Qasem Hassan, the head of the board for Physicians for Human Rights Israel who reviewed the report at the request of the AP. She said the findings indicated medical neglect, exacerbated by Ahmadβs inability to fight disease or infection because of how malnourished and frail he was. Dr. Arne Stray-Pedersen, a professor of forensic medicine at the University of Oslo in Norway who was not involved in the autopsy, said the report suggests there was a period of prolonged malnutrition and sickness lasting at least a few weeks or months. βBased on the report, I interpret the underlying cause of death to be emaciation-wasting,β he said. Scabies rashes were also noted on his legs and genital area, the report said. There was also air between his lungs that expanded into his neck and back, it said, which can cause infection. Air can come from small tears in the lungs, which can occur from severe vomiting or coughing, it said. Ahmadβs family said he was a healthy high schooler who enjoyed playing soccer before he was taken into custody. His father, Khalid Ahmad, said his son sat through four brief court hearings by videoconference, and he noticed at one of them, in February, that his son appeared to be in poor health. The family hasnβt yet received a death certificate from Israel, the elder Ahmad said Friday, and are hoping Dr. Solomonβs report will help bring his sonβs body home. βWe will demand our sonβs body for burial,β he said βWhat is happening in Israeli prisons is a real tragedy, as there is no value for life.β

Tragic. Records show Gene Hackmanβs wife researched symptoms of illness days before her death ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) β Authorities on Tuesday released a lengthy investigation report detailing some of the last emails, phone calls and internet searches by Gene Hackmanβs wife in the days before her death, indicating that she was scouring for information on flu-like symptoms and breathing techniques. Betsy Arakawa died in February of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome β a rare, rodent-borne disease that can led to a range of symptoms that include flu-like illness, headaches, dizziness and severe respiratory distress, investigators have said. Gene Hackman is believed to have died about a week later of heart disease with complications from Alzheimerβs disease. The partially mummified remains of Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were found in their Santa Fe home on Feb. 26, when maintenance and security workers showed up at the home and alerted police. According to the report released Tuesday, a review of Arakawaβs computer showed she was actively researching medical conditions related to COVID-19 and flu-like symptoms between Feb. 8 and the morning of Feb. 12. The searches included questions about whether COVID could cause dizziness or nosebleeds. She also had mentioned in an email to her masseuse that Hackman had woken up Feb. 11 with flu or cold-like symptoms but that a COVID test was negative and she would have to reschedule her appointment for the next day βout of an abundance of caution.β Arakawaβs search history also showed a query for a concierge medical service in Santa Fe the morning of Feb. 12. A review of her phone records by investigators showed she had a call with the service that lasted less than 2 minutes and missed a return call later that afternoon. Investigators also reviewed a call history to the Hackmansβ home phone along with voicemails and security footage from stores that Arakawa had visited on Feb. 11. Authorities also are expected to release more redacted police body camera footage from inside the home as sheriffβs deputies and investigators tried to piece together what had happened to the couple. The written report describes them going through rooms of the home and finding nothing out of the ordinary and no signs of forced entry. They found paper grocery bags on the floor of the pantry. Inside one bag was a Feb. 11 copy of the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper. They also documented a bag of bagels that had been opened, with part of the contents missing. In the living room was a large piano and couches, according to the report. There were pillows on one couch as if someone had been sleeping there. Investigators also described a collection of art, puzzles and drawing supplies in the dining room, and medical supplies like bandages and tape in several kitchen drawers. The materials were being released as the result of a recent court order that mandated any depictions of the deceased couple would have to be blocked from view. All photos, video and documents from the investigation had been restricted from release by an earlier, temporary court order. The Hackman estate and family members had sought to keep the records sealed to protect the familyβs constitutional right to privacy. A report by the New Mexico Department of Health showed an environmental assessment of the Hackman property found rodent feces in several outbuildings and live traps on the property. The inside of the home was clean, with no evidence of rodent activity. Nestled among the piΓ±on and juniper hills overlooking Santa Fe, the Hackman home is not unlike others in the area as mice are common within the surrounding landscape. One of the coupleβs three dogs also was found dead in a crate in a bathroom closet near Arakawa, while two other dogs were found alive. A state veterinary lab tied the dogβs death to dehydration and starvation. An attorney for the estate, Kurt Sommer, argued during a hearing last month that the couple had taken great pains to stay out of the public light during their lifetimes and that the right to control the use of their names and likenesses should extend to their estate in death. The Associated Press, CBS News and CBS Studios intervened in the matter, saying in court filings that they would not disseminate images of the coupleβs bodies and would blur images to obscure them from other records.

It happened to me, too, when streaming. It seemed to have defaulted to the ASL version for me. To fix it, I went to "versions" and played the one without him.

Yeah. Over the past few years, extended droughts in Central and South America (i.e., climate change) have been hurting coffee bean production. These same droughts have been partly responsible for driving some of the migration to the US and the slowdown in ship traffic through the Panama Canal.

The rig count is down for sure (a six percent decline from this time last year), so there are fewer workers getting shit done out in the patch already right now, but I havenβt heard of any mass layoffs yet.

I didn't have any real-life examples in mind, probably because there aren't too many. It was more just hypothetical musing about that possible scenario.

You know, one thing that occurred to me is that if I'm an American exporter who might be hurt by retaliatory tariffs from other countries, especially if my primary export market is China, why wouldn't I set up an assembly plant in Mexico, or hell, even in China, to avoid tariffs on my product? Of course, this would, in turn, negate any job growth incentive at my existing American facility and would, in fact, make those American employees more vulnerable to mass layoffs, especially if I find it's more profitable to just close my American operations.

Dems should shout from the rooftops that this is not only ECONOMICALLY DESTABILIZING but also a gigantic TAX INCREASE. The main burden of both of those falls squarely on consumers: normal, average, everyday, working people. The public needs to be told: "TRUMP IS RAISING YOUR TAXES, bigly." -
Are you the one who said they were starting a Google Docs list a couple of months ago, itemizing the daily bullshit? Yeah, I can see how that'd be a burden.

Even with his situation, heβs still wrong because the price of all consumer goods will go up. Coupled with the massive tax cuts on the wealthy, these tariffs are a regressive shift in the tax burden from the rich, who get the tax cuts, to everyday consumers, who get tax hikes.- 9847 replies

Last night, the local news out here said that if it hits 100 today, it will be the earliest ever in the season for it to get that hot. This is just the first shot of real heat, and it's supposed to be decent for the rest of the week after today. Spring was absolutely ruined by all the dust storms last month, so hopefully the milder temps stick around before someone opens the oven door again.
