  1. I think this story is probably most appropriate for this thread. On Christmas Eve I worked all day and towards the end of the night a family of four comes in. They’re from Texas and live in Desoto. The parents are clearly from the sticks and the mom tells me she went to Emory Rains HS and I am familiar with them. I ask them all for their drinks and the dad wants an Old Fashioned. Mom clearly does not want him to have the drink because his doctor told him he needs to quit drinking recently.

In the things your boss would probably tell you to never do I decided to tell them the short version of my aunt’s story. She was a nurse for 33 years. Her boyfriend for the last fifteen years or so of her life was a guy from Stratford and he liked to drink. A LOT. My aunt went down the rabbit hole with him and drank as much as he did. She knew better as a nurse. Her life ended in January of 2021 because her liver gave out. Upon hearing that story the man still wants a drink because he’s in NYC with his family for Christmas. He gets his drink. At the end of the meal he tells me it tasted like medicine and he couldn’t drink it. The wife got what she wanted after all. They were a very pleasant family and I had a great conversation with the wife about Dallas and the years I lived there. They all left in a good mood and dad still tipped well even though he did not get to drink. I hope that he stops drinking and maybe that moment helps him out.

  2. Detroit’s got another game against the Nets. I think this one is their best chance to break the streak for a good while. If they don’t win this one I think this goes to somewhere in the 30’s. The entire team needs to be traded at this point. Blow the entire thing up and start from scratch. Maybe someone will be interested in seeing if Cunningham can be a good 3rd option on a successful team. It would be interesting to see him in Philly, but they have nothing to offer.

Succession sucks ass and checks in at 13.  A good handful of those on the list were so fucking great I've never heard of them.

No Three's Company? Married With Children? Family Ties? Star Trek?

    LOLz.

I didn’t look at the entire list, but stuff like this has the intended effect of getting people to click on the article and then discuss and critique the list for shows that belong/do not belong. Pretty standard stuff. I saw a couple of older shows on there I did not recognize, but maybe they were big for that generation of people who watched them.

  4. I was worried that the newest season of Shetland would not do well because of Douglas Henshall being done with the show. What has transpired has been pretty awesome as temporary DI Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) Detective Sandy Wilson (Shetland Islands native Steven Robertson) and newcomer from the Met, DI Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen), have made this season just as good as those before it. This show can go on as long as they want it to with this cast.  The drama has been just as good, if not better, with having Tosh as the focus of the show.

  5. I have found it harder to focus on things written on really small objects like coins and whatnot. Trying to read the date on a coin now requires plenty of light or using my phone to zoom in to see it.

  6. People riding e-bikes on sidewalks here. Actually I’ll include mopeds as well as that because I have dodged several of these trying to navigate walking here. If you ask me do I feel bad when I hear about accidents involving either of these modes of transportation I can say that I do not. It’s not fun having to make sure you do not get run over while walking on a sidewalk.

  7. Because of what I do for a living I have this conversation regularly. I don’t volunteer information too often as I am fairly private with what I do in life, but invariably conversations about drinking come up. I explained to someone I work with this week how I put down alcohol and why and they talked about how they do not get drunk each day, but they will have a drink. It’s just an ingrained part of restaurant culture to drink. I don’t tell anyone my opinion about drinking. I attempt to show it is possible to do this job without drinking yourself into an early grave and hopefully other folks can see that and perhaps come to the same realization at some point in their journey through life.

This dumb bullshit again. Everyone “buys” titles. The Astros had the 7th highest payroll in 2022.

Also, what the fuck is wrong with going out and paying to put a quality product on the field? Is it more noble to be the A’s and not even try to field a competitive team?

Yes the goal is now to spend as little as possible so you can say that you got maximum bang for your buck on WAR. You also want to be able to say that your owner and GM are very shrewd in how they spend money. You definitely don’t want your team to spend freely on players. That’s frowned upon by other fans of the poor teams.

Not sure if either qualify, but they are leading men, so I'll add them...John Cena and Jason Momoa.

I did not like Jason Momoa’s character in the last F&F movie and I walked out of the last Aquaman after 30 minutes.

Cena is whatever to me. Do the family movies and make some money. Seems to be his speed.

  10. I thought it went remarkably well last night. Chevy can still tell some great stories and will zing people. One guy asked a question about how they filmed certain scenes and he says “Well, with a camera!” His wife had to help him remember a few things. I suspect this is due to probably taking some pain meds from that fall he had in Buffalo. Also he’s 80 and the memory has to be jogged sometimes. He moved around well and said the fall happened because there were two levels to the stage in Buffalo and he totally paid no attention to the drop-off. He was also very self-deprecating. Said Three Amigos is his favorite movie he did along with Fletch. His favorite Christmas movie is A Wonderful Life. He even read the rant to us and he got a long ovation for that. So many cool things.

Overall it was totally worth it to watch it in a packed theatre with people who came dressed in everything you can think of, including two women wearing Ellen’s blouse. So many Griswold jerseys. Glad I went with the sweater instead!

I saw this guy in downtown Houston today. I was pretty confused when I saw the jersey before seeing the back. Now I want to find him and shake his hand.

    Edit - just went back a page, is this you @Francisco 2.0 ? 🤔😂

I am on my way to see our good friend Chevy Chase tonight over in Jersey at the NJPAC for a screening and Q&A. I almost wore a “You Serious Clark?” shirt and this, but I went with the Jelly of the Month Club shirt and the “Bend Over and I’ll Show You” sweater. I think this will be pretty fun!

17 play drive, no sense of urgency at all, come away with no points. Lulz

This was the easiest game to call a winner on.  CH is embarrassingly basic on offense and Anna has the best 4A defense I have seen in years. This was an easier pick than going Duncanville, Desoto, or Aledo in their games. The coaching difference is bigger than the distance between Melbourne and New York.

My consideration is how often is Emma Stone nude in her numerous sex scenes.

I believe the answer was all of them. Some of the scenes were pretty humorous.

How much screen time Mark Ruffalo gets is a big consideration for me.

Fair amount because he and Willem Dafoe are both central to the character development of Emma’s story. Everything stays pretty well centered around Emma Stone overall though. She really turned in a great performance. I set no expectations for movies, but if I had set the bar high for her she still would’ve jumped right over it.

  15. This movie is strange, weird, unique and awesome all rolled into one. Emma Stone was so ridiculously good in this one. So was Willem Dafoe (Shocking that he is good, I know.) and Mark Ruffalo as well. Emma Stone killed it though from start to finish and her character seems like a fever dream for most of the guys on this website. This really might’ve been the best role she has had so far in her career.

It also seems like they went straight to @Brisketexan for some of the lines in the movie about where we are at as a world society, but then also Brisket for some of the quotes from her sex scenes, which were many. I would highly recommend seeing this as soon as it comes to your local theater.

Lack of time and watching guys do lasting damage to their brains was a line for me I did not want to cross as a fan. People who still watch are cool by me, but I found other interests in life I enjoy more and I’m thankful for the last ten years + of very little football.

Still hope the Horns win and I will probably watch their semi-final game. Again no knock on football fans, but high school ball is usually all I will watch when I do have time to sit down to see a game.

Haha! Yep. He is old school Oak Cliff when it was totally different than it is now. His borders as to what he considers Oak Cliff will be much smaller than what it has grown into now.

I think my friend’s dad graduated from Carter a year after Rhyner left Kimball. Totally different world. It would be cool if my friend’s dad were still. Alive so I could hear stories about Carter back then.

Yep for sure. This should probably say 'Southern Dallas' or 'Southern Dallas County'. South Dallas for me refers to the MLK/Malcom X/Hatcher area. Where Madison and Lincoln are. True South Dallas is a pretty small area.

And even inside Oak Cliff and even Pleasant Grove, the borders are always argued upon as to what exactly they are. Each was its own city with well defined borders back in the day (I think). And since then, they have since expanded to where almost all of Southeast Dallas is considered PG and Southwest Dallas is just Oak Cliff. But of all of that is the southern part of Dallas.

Fun stories from the years I spent going over to TGJM and seeing so many Lincoln-Madison games in basketball and football. My first Madison-Lincoln sporting event was in 2000 when Madison beat a Lincoln team that had Bosh on it. Some teammates from the football team at school graduated from there so we went up to see the game at LOOS in North Dallas. He almost gave up a windmill dunk 5 seconds after the opening tip, but he intentionally fouled a guy 5 inches shorter so it would not happen.

Back when I still used to drink I would spend the summers right down the street (believe the house was on Pennsylvania or the next street over) from Madison at a house where the entire Flentroy family drank and ate BBQ every single weekend. If you remember 2009-10 it was the Flentroy boys in basketball that got them a basketball title and runner up the next year. That family basically adopted me and started calling me a Flentroy…I could not drink as much as them so maybe not quite a full family member…😂

I believe you know this, but if you ever want to get someone in “Sunny South Dallas” angry refer to Oak Cliff and the southern suburbs as South Dallas. That neighborhood is really protective of their identity based on that name.

Aside from that I mean that trio right there is ridiculously impressive. One of my friends that coaches told me he had a chance to go back to his alma mater of SOC to coach football, but he chose to not go home because he was given a different coaching job he wanted on the hardwood (That was then rescinded because the school he was at would not approve of him leaving). I told him to perhaps reconsider this spring a return to The Mecca. He told me he did not attend either of the state title games, but he is thinking of going to this one. Once he left SOC  after graduation in 1990 he only contemplated one return and it was for basketball when James Mays wanted to add him to the staff.
