Could this be the craziest coaching carousel of all time?
Sir Ulrich replied to GreenspointTexas's topic in Football
The owner of the Bills Terry Pegula as an alum. He wrote a $100 million check to allow PSU to have hockey and even paid to keep O'Brien around. They also churn out CEOs at an impressive rate ranking as high as #2 in that regard. https://onwardstate.com/2013/01/04/the-man-who-saved-penn-state-football/ -

K. C. Keeler has Temple at 5-3 this year after only winning 12 total games since COVID. Would love to see a big program give him a shot to right the ship for 3 years. -

On the Penn State side of things they are likely going to have most of their Franklin buyout eliminated from the books this year due to enough high profile jobs of his choosing. Their current AD used to be Temple and hired Rhule, Geoff Collins and Manny Diaz (for 2 weeks) which all had success there. So don't be surprised if he out manuevers Alberts and a&m. -

Couple of notes on Elko and A&M. Ross Bjork hired him from duke and his replacement is Trev Alberts who has lost Schloss Texas and Buzz to Maryland in his 20 months on the job. Jimbos buyout is 7.5 million per year until 2031 and based on the Rhule extension Penn State was likely in the 12 million per year range. Would the aggies be willing to commit around $20 million per year in just Head Coaching salaries? Ross Bjork in 2023 after the Jimbo firing mentioned publicly they were looking for ways to cut costs. Full interview- Cost cutting around 3 minutes -
LSU's history should scare them away from hiring any big name coach. Their 3 NCs have come under head coaches that at the time were not yet household names. At time of LSU hiring Saban- 43-26-1 with 1 Mac championship and no ten win seasons. Only 1 top 10 finish. Won NC at LSU Miles- 28-21 at Ok State and never finished higher than 3rd in the Big 12. Won NC at LSU Orgeron- 10-25 at Ole Miss with no ranked finishes. Won NC at LSU Kelly- 145-61 with 3 conference championships. 4 BCS/Playoff bowls and 8 top 15 finishes. Fired for being an a hole.

Yeah, you look it
-
I'm taking the SEC championship in to account in that assumption. Scar will beat somebody this year (ala Texas/Florida) and Texas/Mizzou are good enough to capitalize on mistakes.
-
I watch most of their games that dont coincide with our times. They will drop 2 before the playoffs. They string together a few low percentage plays on offense that would kill a game if they don't connect. Also the defense is suspect enough to drop 30+ on by a competent offense

The point I'm making is those guys almost came when the program was a mess. How's the job look to those level of coaches with the current system in place? This administration got Seven Win Steve to back to back semi finals. He's proved anybody worth a lick can win big here under the current rules.

Bumping this thread if anybody needs a good laugh this Monday morning.

I 2nd this. No coach is licking their chops to coach at this version of Florida. Results aside Herman was getting any job he wanted in 2017 and would have went to LSU if we didn't come in. Secondly no other program ever got close to hiring Saban away from Alabama except for Texas. Same with Meyer almost pulling Meyer from retirement in 21.

The delusion of a Blue Blood HC knows no bounds but this was more power related than money. There are no coincidences and timing lines up perfectly after everybody and their mom called for Sark to give up play calling duties. The threat from Sark/Sexton was to let him have total control or he has gonna take his ball and go to the NFL.
-
Regarding Sark and the NFL heres a snippet from a 2011 interview. And before we say he'd never get a job offer this year just remember Kingsbury got hired as a HC after Tech fired him 2 months prior.
-
Not sure who called plays officially but Sark takes credit. Sark was also Assistant HC that year and a photo from the season with a call sheet.
-
Theres two timelines at play here. 1. We lose another game and Sark goes to the NFL before early signing day after a loss. To save the roster we are forced to hire a James Franklin or other non playoff coach of similar ilk. 2. We sneak into the playoffs or CDC gets Sark to wait until playoffs start allowing the better coaches to lose out. Right now Florida is forced to hire somebody before Kiffin can make a decision.
-
He's gonna be great
-
People hating the Kiffin idea is wild. Hes on pace for his 7th 10 win season. Sark needs a miracle for his 3rd 10 win season this year. Kiffin has the only two 10 win seasons in FAU history and about 40% of Ole Miss'. He's done way more with less compared to Sark.

Of course. Did you know a 3rd year Peyton Manning lost to a 4 win Memphis team with this state line? Cmp Att Pct Yds Y/A AY/A TD Int 23 40 57.5 296 7.4 5.7 1 2
-
Not that it matters but the Mannings are 9-0 vs Vanderbilt all time.. But they also have all had their worst performances against them for whatever reason.
-
If they can't make a run this year then when will they? The next 4 years includes Texas 4X, LSU 4X Bama 2x, OU 2X, Georgia 2x, Ole Miss 2X, Tennessee 2X. Elko is a smart man and looking at Penn States future schedule they don't play Oregon until 2027 or Ohio State until 2028.

Penn State to me is the most intriguing opening. They fired Franklin at a time where he is potentially in demand by P4 schools so their buyout will be greatly reduced if multiple schools get involved there. It will also be the first time it has opened in modern history without scandal holding them back. I think they could get serious looks from Elko and Kelly which is better than any school not named Florida this year. As for Florida their biggest advantage to Lane over Ole Miss is the ability to do a 10 year deal. For those unaware Mississippi schools can only offer 4 year deals so Lane has a rolling 6 year contract with the athletic foundation. Surely their boosters won't be dumb enough to personally guarantee that deal completely separate from the school. -
Ever since the Georgia game a year ago the shine of Sark the offensive genius has slowly faded away and led to more questions than answers. It is time for Sark the CEO to fire Sark the OC, both of which are elite in their own right as history has shown, or he risks suffering the same fate of Tom Herman. There are plenty of examples of former great play callers that have allowed their Ego to undermine their ability to win at the highest level and ultimately led to their downfall. Locally we saw Tom Herman on offense and Charlie Strong defense fail to property delegate their biggest strengths while focusing on building a program. Nationally we saw Jimbo fisher do the same and get fired at a&m after letting his ego ruin the entire program before the halfway point of his 10 year mega deal. We could spend hours finding examples of coaches failing to properly entrust their side of the ball with high level assistants. If Sark wants to be held in the same breath as other elite Saban acolytes he needs to follow the lead of the others. Saban- Identified Kirby Smart early and allowed him to become his DC in his late 20s leading to 4 national championships. After Smart he hired Pruitt who ultimately left to be the HC of Tennessee after a NC. Smart- Since his first year in Athens he has relied on a DC to manage the defense starting with Mel Tucker before bringing in Lanning/Schumann to lead the defense. All of whom have been or will be a HC in their career. Kiffin- The parallels of Sark and Kiffin are eerily similar in both their job history and failures on the biggest stages. In 2017 when hired at FAU he handed the play calling over to Kendall Briles and then Charlie Weiss Jr. After taking the Ole Miss job he has ran through a few OCs including Lebby who parlayed his success into HC gig and Weiss Jr who Ole MIss fans want gone. But the results show as a CEO Kiffin has been able to punch above his weight at a program that historically is foot note in the SEC. Day- For the first 5 years of his tenure Day has had the same issues we are seeing with Sark in the playoffs. Great regular seasons and losing by a score in the playoffs in games that were very winnable. In year 6 Day finally gave up the play calling duties to Chip Kelly before winning his first championship and now allows Brian Hartline to call plays without missing a beat. If Sark wants to make the leap the others have and keep his job at Texas long term here are a few names that make sense and should be capable of handling the job. Coaches with connections to Sark- AJ Milwee- this is the most obvious choice but his development of QBs at Texas has left much to be desired. Also without any real play calling experience the job may be to much to ask. In the even a move is made I would like to see Milwee call plays at another school first. Charlie Weiss Jr- for the past few years he has called plays for Ole Miss with varying results. Sark and Weiss spent a year together with the Falcons and the job would be more enticing than a rebuild at Florida if Kiffin takes that job. Clay Helton- Laughing at this one on the surface is easy but look at the offenses he put up while calling plays for Sark at USC. In Sarks time there they averaged close to 35 a game before Helton took over as HC following Sarks dismissal. He is currently making $900k at Georgia Southern and fits the mold of HCs taking coordinator roles (Kelly at tOSU, Malzahn at FSU, Wommack at Alabama). Sitting at 3-4 after an 8 win high water mark last year Helton could look to get back to a blue blood at the highest level. Tee Martin- Same connections as above. His offenses have left a lot to be desired but after spending time in the NFL under Todd Monken now may be the time for him to re emerge at the college level. Coaches on the hot seat- Jonathan Smith- This one may take another year to play out but early signs are not pleasant for Smith at Michigan State. The closest connection Texas has to Smith is the 4 years Smith spent at Washington with Kwiatkowski before taking the Oregon State job. Joe Moorhead- In year 4 as the HC of Akron things are not getting any better. Successful stints at Penn State and Oregon would make this a no brainer if it were to happen. Garrett Riley- The younger brother of Lincoln rose to fame with the 2023 TCU runner up finish and quickly parlayed that to a job at Clemson where he was entrusted with a complete overhaul of the offensive system. This is the final year of his original deal at Clemson and may make sense for all parties to move on to allow Dabo to save face heading into a do or die year next year. Bobby Petrino- I tried to justify this due to its abject hilarity but I can't, moving on. Pipe Dreams (I know these will not happen)- Dan Mullen- Currently at UNLV and having early success but history shows the schools he wants would require three 10 win seasons before hiring him. Texas OC Dan Mullen would be able to parlay one or two seasons into whatever high end opening came up. Currently making $3 million a year. Mike McDaniel- The future former Dolphins head coach has consistently gotten worse behind the QB play of the oft concussed Tua. His services will likely be sought after at the NFL level but a refresher in the college ranks should be entertained. Most likely returning to San Fran under Shanahan like Saleh just did. Todd Monken- Has been the OC of the Ravens since 2023 after a successful run at Georgia but in the fickle world of NFL coaching Harbaugh may be forced to make a move to save face after a down year. Little chance this happens but always worth a call if things change in Baltimore. The likelihood Sark makes a change to his play calling duties is thin barring a call from CDC that forces his hand. Hopefully for Texas this change is the result of a personal decision made by Sark alone that allows him to remain at Texas for a long time to come.
