Since the money is guaranteed, nothing beyond what might happen if someone (Yaklich, Berry, whoever) is named interim HC and potentially getting some sort of pay bump if they have that contingency in their contract.

I would imagine the main counter-argument to firing him now - aside from the "Texas doesn't do this" one mentioned earlier - is trying to keep players from portaling before the new HC is selected; any time you bring a new HC in the whole program is overhauled, and it might not be wise to kneecap the incoming HC with a roster that's already half-gone. We saw what happened to Texas when Shaka's first class was underwhelming (in part due to having to hold Barnes' last class together) then the next year he lost half the roster to graduation; if there's a way to make that transition smoother for the new coach it would be worth considering. Maybe the new coach doesn't want any of the existing players, but at least give him the choice to retain them. Like people have noted, the money on Shaka is already spent; paving the way for the replacement to hit the ground running is probably a wise strategy.

Give Yaklich a shot now.  He coached with Beilein and seems to be a sharp guy.  It's a soft hand off during the season and we may possibly keep some talent around while we see what Yak can do.  Maybe he can dance like Shaka did after defeating McNeese St.. and the players will like him.  I'd love to see what this roster could do with an actual coach.

It is kind of crazy we can't do those things, because I have seen the timeout huddles, and Shaka is saying real deal coaching stuff like "guys, we need to get offensive rebounds".  It must be the players just not listening.

Against Kansas, Shaka told the players in the huddle to put on their mean faces and then he gave them an example.  I laughed so hard.  This guy is the biggest fraud and Patterson should be sued for his negligence.

Man, we are so far past that point. It's year 5 and our product looks like finger paint from a bunch of blind-folded kindergarden kids who were force fed Quaaludes.

God almighty. How does a program survive being like this?

It's so unbelievably sad to watch.  Our athletic department is a complete disaster.

I'm thinking they wait to fire Shaka until we are ready to move into the new arena. New digs, new coach. Imagine a new coach dropping a Shaka-like turd heading into christening the new place? One more year of Shaka lowering the bar.

Well, you risk having an empty Moody Center for the opening if you wait that long.  Prolly going to be an empty open regardless.  They are going to have to have a coach K type coach to get it full for opening night.   Anything less and it's going to be 3-5 years b4 it is sold out and that's being optimistic.

  5. Interesting article on attendance and it does apply to conference realignment.  In the business world when demand falls, there tends to be a consolidation or something new bursts onto the scene to replace an old tech..  I think falling demand will be the driver in the new cfb of the 2020's.  I think a consolidation is coming.  The schools that cannot produce the large fan following are going to get left out.  This is a large reason for not adding anyone to the Big 12.  There is no one out there that moves the revenue needle upward.

In modern college basketball, no it most certainly isn't. There is nothing structurally wrong with the program that can't be fixed by changing coaches and recruiting better just within the state.

I happen to think Texas athletics is a disaster because it's rotten culturally, but that's a separate issue that will probably never change.

I think you are on to something and would ask you to expand on the culture issue but it may not wear well on Surly.

It's pointless to have conferences if you go to a pod model. At that point it'd be more efficient to just set it up like the NFL where there's 64 teams in a league and you're aligned with your 4 team division permanently and just rotate playing other pods/divisions.

This.  The pod rotations would need to be regional for obvious reasons.

Remember that famous line about nuclear war?

"The living would envy the dead."

That's kind of how I feel when watching Shaka's teams in those all too frequent moments where they're misfiring on all cylinders.  Its so fucked up yet never even remotely interesting.

I quit watching.  I have better things to do.  One day I will wake up to find SS gone, hopefully.

For 4 long years I supported Shaka and what he's been trying accomplish here in Austin against the wave of populist idiocy that's penalized him for rebuilding a program in a powerful Big 12 conference. Over the last 5 years the Big 12 has been the strongest basketball conference in America top to bottom, hands down. That is not up for debate.

When I said it could take up to 5 years to rebuild a program I was roundly abused, but that was the truth of the matter, and after 4 long years of extremely checkered luck here we are in year 5 and we are finally turning the corner.

Year after year of strong rercuiting has produced a seasoned and tough roster. We are ready to compete this year, and even though the Big12 remains one of the top conferences in America if not the premier conference, we're going to compete for the title this year.

We are a sweet 16 team this year. And next year, we compete for a national title. So I came back here to say to all the Shaka haters "I told you so". And I will laugh as this year unfolds and Derka become the biggest Shaka fan of us all, and as he gives all the credit to Yaklich, even though the credit belongs to Shaka.

This is what we planned for and dreamed of when we showed Rick B the door. This is the new horns basketball under Shaka, and we jack the 3 early and often, and we hit those shots, and we play D. Welcome aboard, folks.

How was Texas a rebuild after Barnes was fired??  What??  NOW it's a rebuild.  It's like a thermonuclear device was detonated over the FEC.  It's going to be an empty place for some time and will continue at the Moody Center.  Oh, we will get a small bump when it opens but reality always wins.  Most of the current players will leave if we hire a coach that holds the players accountable.  It will take some time.  Texas basketball is a disaster.

    I can if you'd like.

This.   They would have added BYU already had it not been for the Pac-12's anti-religious bigotry.  If they didn't add BYU, they certainly aren't adding TCU, Baylor or even Notre Dame.

The PAC is facing the dustbin of history.  Results matter, intentions don't.  The PAC is quickly becoming the WAC financially and competitively.  If Apple or Amazon fail to break the piggy bank, they won't be in the position to dictate anything.

Wait, I get not wanting to go the Pac12, but what the hell is wrong with a pod setup?  In my opinion it's the only way you can have decent scheduling in a 16 team league.

Oh, and fuck you too bitch!

Some people tire of the talk with nothing happening.  Don't let it bother you.

    Texas to ACC..?

How SEC is separating itself from both ACC/ PAC current leagues in earnings:

By 2023, SEC pay $66 million (at least)/ PAC will earn a whopping $38 million...

SEC is the way.  Going to have to eat some crow and join if we want to have a successful football program.  Who would you rather play, ou, piggy, gomer, lsu or utah, asu, au, etc...... every year?  I know who the older alumni would rather play ,but if we let our Shaka loving admin decide,  they'll go with the easy path and assume we get wins against the easy PAC teams. At the same time, we will be sinking lower in the revenue race while not having to be held accountable for losing to the teams in the SEC mentioned above.  Get tough or die Texas.

We punked the dog shit out of SEC Georgia which was one win from the playoff.  Frauds too?

Texas was an unranked team with 5 losses in 2019 going into the bowl season.  One of those losses was to TCU.  Utah almost made the playoff from the PAC because of their record against other PAC teams which is fraudulent and overrated.  Texas exposed the PAC as being extremely weak by whipping Utah.  As for Texas beating Georgia, Texas had a ranked, 3 loss, and much better team in 2018 than 2019.  The PAC is very weak and it would be a huge mistake to join that conference.

    PAC 16 is our future.

    Texoma pod

    Texas

    Oklahoma

    Texas Tech

    Oklahoma State

    Mountain West pod

    Colorado

    Arizona

    Utah

    Arizona State

    California pod

    USC

    Stanford

    UCLA

    Cal

    Northwest pod

    Washington

    Oregon

    Washington State

    Oregon State

9 regular season conference matchups in a 3+2+2+2 configuration.

The pod champions play in a 4 team playoff to determine the conference champion.

Of course the SEC, Big 10, and ACC would all need to also go to a 16 team conference with four, 4 team pods with the same conference champion playoff to make it work.

Then the four conference champions would of course have the 4 team playoff to determine the National Championship.

With 3 OCC games, 9 conference matchups, and the maximum of 4 playoff games you're still only looking at 16 games in a season which I believe is reasonable.

I believe this would be an ideal setup, and be freaking awesome!

Just not interested in this at all really.  The PAC is dreadful. Wanting to join the SEC does not make me an aggy.  I am fan of football, that's all.  The only thing remotely interesting in the PAC is the scenery.  We punked the dog shit out of Utah which was one win from the playoff.... frauds.

Late night games are a non starter.  Late night flights from the West coast are DOA.

Just like Shaka went to the Final 4. I've seen enough of Pierce to know he sucks. Texas should be moving away from the Patterson/Perrin hires as quickly as possible.

I am confused by this statement.  What assistants at Tech wouldn't pass Texas compliance, and for what reason(s)?

This is code language for, "yelling at players when they deserve it", especially in public.  We just couldn't have that.  The snowflakes would melt.  I would be willing to wager that yelling at a player in public is grounds for termination without payment.  It's probably more important that there is no screaming in the locker room than the seats be 1/3 full.

Jesus Christ that’s horribad. Thanks Stevie P! Great AD hire that was.

Perrin and Fenves extended the contract and made it guaranteed money.  It was a giant middle finger to Texas fans for wanting a winner.  The Moody Center is going to be empty for some time.  This won't be turned around over night.

before i edited my post (yes it was actually longer than that before i chopped it down some lol) i had typed out, "Bobby Knight would legitimately have punched someone in the face."

mad seriously, name any elite coach who you have respect for- Belichick, Saban, Poppovich, anyone- can you imagine them doing that? it is so completely time deaf and out of touch...i just can't even find the words to describe how awful that is. you will never win with a coach/attitude/mind frame like that.

Old school military.  Bobby Knight was more common than one might think, especially 30-40 years ago.  We have become soft but his flare for the dramatic was over the line.  However, not many kids can even stomach an angry look today.

i've been biting my tongue all season about a certain post game ritual for Shaka and his guys, because i figured, "hey, we're winning our games right now, let's not be so negative." welp, that's over. not only does this shit piss me off, it is a *crystal clear* sign of just how far out of his element Shaka Smart is in this conference. so what is it that has me so pissed? Shaka's team enjoys little dance parties after every single win.

check the date on that. November 30th. that footage is from the night we barely scraped by McNeese State in our own building. that's right, we celebrated like that after beating this fucking team:

    1cd96d73ec2588c5af0d4b5fe0fe972c.jpg

are you fucking kidding me? the scene in that locker room should be a sober one, with every single man in the room silently reflecting, asking himself why some high school team from Louisiana nearly just beat you on your home floor. but not us! not Shaka's boys. we're dancing! we're fucking dancing! and our head coach is hootin' an' hollerin' and hugging and high fiving his players, joyous over his team's landmark victory. what the fuck. what an absolute fucking clown. he clearly has zero fucking clue what he's doing, he has even less self awareness, and he's passing it on to our players. well here are my thoughts on that:

until this very moment, i have publicly maintained throughout the years that I did not hate Shaka Smart the man, i just hated pretty much everything about how he coaches. nope. not anymore. cannot do it. FUCK Shaka Smart. what an absolute fucking clown, and an embarrassment to our entire athletic department. "we are the joneses". christ. that shit left with DeLoss. this is our new standard. we are now the clowns

Can you imagine our locker room if we hired this guy?  This used to be the type of coaching that was prevalent in sports.  I know mine was. LOL
