  1. not sure it's been mentioned, but the whole raiders of the lost ark argument was a plotline in the big bang theory not long ago.  not a similar one, but literally the same word usage.  whomever brought it up and likely others who responded have definitely seen what i'm talking about.

one plothole that has bothered me recently was from "funny people", a movie i really like parts of, but as a whole just doesn't work for a variety of reasons i won't go into right now.

the whole story of the relationship between george and ira is essentially introduced when george comes by the comedy club out of nowhere.  after an odd and depressing set, he gets off, and ira (seth rogen) does his set.  ira's set is miserably bad.  not bad execution or timing, just bad all around.  he made a couple not very funny jokes about george's weird set, and those were his best jokes.  then he leaves.

later that night or pretty soon after, george tracks down ira's number to call him, compliment him on his joke writing (?), and offer him a job writing jokes for him for some upcoming event, and possibly future appearances.  i find it hard to believe that someone with george's resources and connections (endless) would need to pluck the world's worst comedian from the hermosa comedy and magic c-team after a horrid 4 minute set.

the entire movie is based on their relationship.  and later on, ira tells some decent jokes.  it wouldn't have hurt the movie to show ira having a decent set, and it would've made way more sense.  oh well.

  2. i watch a lot of stuff, so maybe i see instances more than others, but this thread is to start a list of jokes/situations that need to be put out to pasture.  many were never funny, and all of which are definitely not funny anymore.

-my first nomination is someone saying something near or to a smart phone, only to have siri (or some other voice command application) mishear it, resulting in something completely different happening.

example - the commercial where the surgeon accidentally sews a phone into someone's stomach, and when they tell his wife they're gonna make it better, siri thinks they're trying to make butter.  yep, hilarious.  pretty much every sitcom that i watch has tried it, and even black-ish (which i don't watch) had one during the 2 minutes that i accidentally watched over the weekend.  probably dozens more.

-my second nomination is when, during an action sequence, two people are communicating about where to shoot an enemy, and one person says, "2 o'clock" to which the other person invariably checks their watch, or remarks that the time has already passed, or whatever.

example - indiana jones and the last crusade with his dad.  it sorta worked then.  not sure it's worked since.

    what say you?

  3. down goes bauer.

Bauer to the DL with small fracture in fibula

Indians placed RHP Trevor Bauer on the 10-day disabled list with a small stress fracture in his right fibula.

Indians manager Terry Francona said there's no timetable yet on when Bauer might be able to return because the team is still gathering information about the injury. Bauer suffered the small lower-leg fracture when he was struck by a line drive in his last start Saturday against the White Sox. It's a tough blow, as the 27-year-old right-hander has broken out to the tune of a 2.22 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 214/56 K/BB ratio in 166 innings (25 starts) this season. Adam Plutko will fill his rotation spot.

  4. why would mike even take a job like that.  his paycheck showed he's getting $10k (weekly? bi-weekly?).  seems like a dumb move for a smart ex-cop to make.

solid episode.  once again, i'm finding myself the most bored during the jimmy scenes, but whatever.  that should change soon.

on a separate topic, back when there were breaking bad threads, i brought up (several times) that a big company like pollos/madrigal should've given walt a big, fancy title and paid him a paycheck, with necessary taxes taken out, etc.  i understand there was basically an entire season devoted to the laundering of the money, purchasing of the car wash, etc, but it seemed like a pretty big plot-point never properly explained.  now, they purposely show mike's paycheck (last episode).  i wonder if he gets in some sort of trouble over it, and that's why they handled walt differently.

Remarkably, her mom has lost her own text message trail and told Snook that if she sent those text messages, she doesn't remember sending them.  Yet this didn't raise any red flags for Snook or anyone supporting UM.

    the ambien walrus strikes again?

  6. back on the grid and finally watched the premiere.  i echo many of the sentiments in here that it was a slow premiere without any real new information.  the thing is, that's how this show has been.  i said earlier in this thread (i think) that what has happened in 3 seasons could've easily happened in 2 (or fewer).  and the time in between seasons (in this case, almost 14 months) is absurd for a 10 episode season of tv, unless it has g.o.t. type production and effects.  which it doesn't.

i also agree with derka (ducks) that this show's rewatchability just isn't there, at least for me.  the wire, mad men, lost, the west wing, sopranos, breaking bad - all my favorite hour long shows are extremely rewatchable, and not because of action or twists, but mostly because of great dialogue.  even breaking bad suffers a little on rewatch because the intensity and twists aren't the same the second time through - but the acting/writing/directing still made for fantastic tv.

when i watched those shows on first run, it was event tv and i tuned everything out and stared at the screen.  in this show, after waiting 14 months, i still was drifting in and out, checking my phone, etc.

bcs seems like it's still falling into the trap where it seems like they don't have enough story to tell, but they want this to be a long, money-making endeavor for everyone involved.  and btw, this could be a directive from the amc brass, so i'm not necessarily blaming gilligan or the bcs producers.  the handmaid's tale and westworld very recently (in my opinion) created seasons that seemed like aimless filler.  not saying this is that, but i do need plot advancement.

i also agree that he should've been saul by now, and here's why: when i watched breaking bad, i loved saul's character and every scene he was in.  in fact, i wanted more of them.  when the idea of a spinoff was on the table, i said, "fuck yeah, i want more saul goodman scenes."  what i did not say was, "fuck yeah, i am really interested in the events leading up to jimmy mcgill (who i may or may not like) slowly turning into the character that i would later know as saul goodman" (who i already know i like).

and for whomever asked - breaking bad is the show that immediately comes to mind in the category of "the next season picked up the exact moment the previous season ended."

Boston and New York were both top 10 in tv ratings last year.  Houston and LA were bottom 10.  Money will always prevail in this.

i don't think there's anyone really arguing this.  but espn sunday night baseball is their mlb showcase every week.  this is when they should be working with mlb to get teams and players on the national radar that maybe could transcend the regional bias baseball is experiencing.  this is the game every week that casual fans might tune in and check out.

the sox and yankees are not hard to find on tv, and they play 20x a year (and probably in the playoffs will again).  every single weekend series of theirs has a sunday night espn game.  we've seen it before.  getting more teams and players and interesting matchups in a showcase game (the only time all week that one game has its own time-slot) would be better for the health of the sport.  that's how the nfl does it (speaking about sunday/monday night football, not the thursday night crapfest).

  8. i always thought the monopoly promotion was genius by mcdonald's, because i assumed the biggest prizes had only 1-2 possible winners (like there would only be 2 boardwalk pieces in the world in a year).  the odds that someone who's actively playing the game and keeping up overlapped with the placement of that one piece seemed astronomically small.  therefore, they created a fun game that people liked, but never had to pay off on the bigger prizes (and if they did, i assumed insurance was involved).  i haven't read article yet, so i'm sure i'll learn more about this situation, but fuck it, i wish he got to keep the shit he "won".  pretty sure mcdonald's is gonna do ok.

affleck's a solid director, i'm excited for this.  i read about the bidding war earlier.

  9. the pecking order down there is about to get really interesting.  with much of the pen not really distinguishing themselves in a good way, i really wonder how it'll shake out.  do we put osuna in the closer role right away?  does he setup rondon (or vice-versa)?  who's your first pick for 7th inning guy?  sipp has been one of our best, but he's still our situational lefty (i guess?).

where does mchugh figure into all this?  is he just there to get the toughest out regardless of inning?

whomever said peacock has been disappointing nailed my feelings as well.  he was so dependable for an inning or two, and now it's really hit or miss.  joe smith has been very good very quietly since late april.  with osuna-rondon-smith-mchugh-sipp + mccullers/morton in oct there isn't really enough room for peacock/harris/devo to be fucking around the way they have.

  10. at least 2-3x throughout the show he's said something like that.  it's a very big thing for his character (although seems with his upbringing it wouldn't be, but whatever).  when the reporter asked him to comment on ted chaough's comment about being in draper's rear view mirror or something, don says, "i don't even know who he is."

I was late turning on the game... but fuck Luis Severino.  That’s some bullshit to pull on his first pitch of the game.

(And the immediate ump show and tossing Alex Cora eight seconds later is almost just as bad.)

i didn't see it, what happened?  he throw at mookie?  he's been very un-severino-like lately.

And FS1 on Saturday. Just idiotic that the rematch of one of the best World Series in history, isn’t getting a national game.

HG, are you going to a game this weekend?

Also, it doesn’t sound like Altuve will play on this road trip.

no, i can't, because i'm going out of town with my in-laws.  i don't want to talk about it.  i should be sweating my balls off in chavez ravine right fucking now.

the last time i was there i saw jv pitch, but we did not win.

can’t speak for succession but there are no black folk in montana. and there’s still a black cowboy on the show.  injuns are the minority group well represented.  watch the wire if you need more color.

not really into cop shows, but thanks for the rec.

Yep, that sucked and was fucking ridiculous, but you can watch Katherine Cunningham on Yellowstone now.

speaking of ridiculous and implausible deaths to women on tv shows i watch...

  15. so we're gonna make a one hour drama and the entire cast is white dudes.  except we need to have one chick, so we're gonna make her a red head, and to over compensate, we're gonna make her a super badass and even though she's not attractive, everyone wants to fuck her.

am i talking about yellowstone?  am i talking about succession?  what show will be next?
