2 years ago, the Astros had the best pitching staff in baseball and now, it’s possibly the worst.

This version of it has been.

How about this version (and what I would absolutely do if I was Espada- no fucking around with Brown, France or Spaghetti again until you have to) of a staff- I can't imagine it will be bad:

    JV Thursday

    Friday off

    Saturday- Blanco,

    Sunday Framber,

    Monday off

    Tuesday Javier.

    Wednesday- JV

    Thur- Blanco

    Friday- Framber

Saturday- France/Brown/Spaghetti/Bielak- whichever you think will suck least

    Sunday- Javier

That's 10 calendar days where you should only expect 1 shitty start.  Make that happen- fire Abreu into the face of the sun- send Singleton along with him- rotate C/1B between Caratini, Dubon and Diaz, move Bregman down to the 6 hole or something like that and lets see if that lineup/team can fuck.

Altuve/Pena/Alvarez/Tucker/Diaz/Bregman/Chas/Caratini/Dubon.  Make that the lineup for a solid week to go with that rotation and I bet we win more than 1/3 of our games. Boom- problem solved Espada.

I'm sure that's not what they will do.

He’s an excellent NB who will likely be drafted. He’s not a natural CB, irrespective of his delusions otherwise.

The first sentence was how I think of him. I’m not sure why he couldn’t play a better corner than Brooks but that’s not me arguing that’s exposing my own ignorance.
but this board is kind and gentle to well intentioned dolts so I figured- why not ask the question?

Justin Wells knows less about the program than the most idiotic poster in this forum.

I don't think Texas is going to have to start Barron at CB this year, but if they did, light the cigarettes now because we've already been fucked.

I’m a dumb dumb so keep that in mind when you answer- but serious question…. Is that because you don’t think Barron is a good football player in general or because you don’t think he’s capable of playing CB- and if the latter why isn’t he?

This is the same organization that trotted out Maldonado's corpse for the entirety of last year- April was too much to hope for that it would be over.

If I might rebut, if I was hiring a manager with no previous experience, and he was replacing a seasoned and somewhat independently minded employee, I’d want someone who made very plain he would work as part of a collaborative team and would follow best practices as set by the general manager’s office.

I also would think that some messiness is just a by-product of it being April and wanting/needing to experiment.  What’s unfortunate is that they are losing and that’s not giving them much cover.

TL:DR It ain’t Joe, it’s Dana (or just the front office).

Yeah, I get what you are saying. And I don’t have a problem really with the decisions being made at 4.30 which is where Dusty was the absolute worst, but I think he’s screwing up in game on his own.

Espada’a not the issue. The only change he could make is benching Abreu. He’s moved him down in the order. He’s played Singleton more. I would have played Caratini at first instead of Singleton.

It’s truly a crime that Singleton was still on this roster at the start of the season. Abreu provided fool’s gold with his performance after coming back from the IL. He was always going to be here in 2024. Sticking with Singleton as the primary backup was not a defensible decision.

The back of the bullpen has been absolutely terrible to this point. You have to assume Hader and Pressly will get better at some point this year. If that doesn’t happen, the season’s over anyway.

Yep.  They are the difference (back of the pen) from us being worst in the league and in 1st place in the division if they had done their job.

  7. Our FIP is 4.31, our actual ERA is 5.1.  We've had an insane amount of bad luck in babip both ways.  Our top 3 pitchers have all been on the IL, and our back end of the bullpen who was supposed to be awesome and has been totally awful- beyond that- all is well, all is well.

Seriously, it's really unlikely that this shit keeps up- it's not plausible and weird stuff can happen over any 20 game sample in a 162 game season.

All that being said- our manager is a dipshit- he's pitching the bullpen too much and in the wrong situations, he's running out Abreu when he doesn't have to, he's running out Singleton when he doesn't have to, and he's fucking around with Meyers for reasons I don't understand.  I'd rather have a gold glove CF with an average bat in the lineup vs the desecrated carcass of Jose Abreu- which is what the decision to play dubon at CF instead of 1B or 2b (with altuve doing some DH.

Espada, Dusty, your dream manager - their hands are tied with the make up of this roster.

    this didn’t age well ….

That's just not true. There are answers on this roster.  It's one guy that can't hit and one guy that isn't hitting (bregman) and that's it.

    OPS plus:

    Diaz- 125

    Altuve- 196

    Pena- 146

    Bregman- 73

    Chas- 98

    Meyers- 100

    Tucker- 162

    Alvarez-152

    Dubon- 115

    Caratini- 110

That's 10 dudes with 8 of them average or above average- Chas 2% below and Bregman off to his typical slow start.

You could play either Caratini, Diaz or Dubon at 1B and have a lineup that's basically average or above at every position- unless you somehow believe that Bregman is below average as opposed to just starting slowly as he always does.

  9. I was on record as not caring for the Joe Espada hire and thinking it was odd to turn over a WA team to a new guy, but I didn’t think he would be this over his head.
I’d fire him and bring in Joe Maddon- he can grate on players and wear out his welcome- but that’s a thought for a later day. Also- any idea what scrap iron is up to these days?  Is he dead?  Bobby Valentine- is he still kicking it? Can he coach every game in disguise?
this team probably doesn’t suck and the back end of the bullpen probably isn’t going to be hammered dogshit all year. The Abreu problem will resolve itself (if he wants Dubon in the lineup so badly why doesn’t he just go with him at first- or Diaz at first Dubon at 2B and Altuve DH some. It’s not like the Astros have any unmanageable or unfixable problems/ they just have to- you know- manage them and fix them. And hope the back of the bullpen becomes the strength that everyone thought it would be instead of horrific.
we are 7/16. We are 2 for 8 in save opportunities.
a more realistic 7 for 8 would have us at 12-11 even with all the starters being hurt and Abreu and the other mess, against probably the toughest opening schedule in baseball.
I guess I just can’t believe those guys are going to continue to be so bad. I won’t believe it until Memorial Day- too much positive track record to throw that away after 4 weeks.

  10. I wanted to see what this team looks like when healthy when someone upstream had posted that we were like 3rd from last in runs allowed.  I've put together a composite line just using guys we would expect to see pitch for us- JV, Framber, Javier, Brown, France, Blanco, Hader, Montero, Abreu, Pressly, Martinez and Bielak.  That's it- that's not counting guys like LMJ and Garcia or Urquidy who you knew were gone for long periods of time before the season started.  So- it's not like this is a healthy staff or anything, but it's what you thought you were getting- I guess I will throw Taylor Scott in there as well since he'd have broken camp with the main guys.

    173 IP, 166 H's 79BB, 152K's, 88 Runs, 82 ER's

    ERA- 4.265, Whip- 1.41, 1.92 K/BB

Hader, Pressly and Abreu are a combined 1-4 with a -1.1 WAR and directly responsible for 2 or 3 more losses that don't show up in that 1-4.

This team is a little bit of health- guys with real good track records in the bullpen getting better and the will to solve the Jose Abreu situation away from being just fine.  All that seems pretty fixable but maybe it won't be.

Anyone have any experience with STR to traveling nurses?  We bought a small house recently with intention of a flip, paid $110K cash for a 3/1.  Needs a new roof, interior paint, flooring (LVP) and some cosmetic improvements, nothing major, new woodwork on front large front porch.  Corner lot, no neighbors next to or behind.  We know the owner of those lots.  Last week we found out it's in a medical overlay district 2-3 blocks from a growing regional hospital.

We had planned on flipping it, but once we found out about the Medical Overlay, we thought about renting it to a medical oriented practice , but after contacting a staffing (for lack of better word) company for nurses, we think it may draw $3K a month.  We are in the process of acquiring furniture.  Mrs JDHorn is a realtor so we are privy to many people looking to unload furniture.  We have acquired a 40" Samsung, 4 beds and we generally have an attic full of stuff she uses for staging.

Does anyone have thoughts on renting to nurses?  My limited research shows they do extended runs at hospitals, 90 days-  6 mos and sometimes longer if they like the gig.

The place is 30 min to the gulf of mexico, couple hours to New Orleans or FL panhandle beaches...not a bad area, a little rural but im thinking $3K would be the number if we got 2 or maybe 3 nurses (would be tight with 1 bathroom), though I imagine there are facilities at the hospital too?

3k a month for a place you paid 110k cash for (even with improvements seems like a pretty damn good ROI to me.  I've never rented to traveling nurses but my SIL was one for a while.  I wouldn't be at all concerned about it. They work those guys pretty hard- they make decent money and I wouldn't think they'd tear the place apart. She never did anyway.  They also don't know many people so they aren't likely to be throwing ragers or anything like that. I'd do it if I thought I could get that number for sure.

  14. National average is at 7.44. Friendly reminder that doesn’t account for people paying points!

Actual with that factored in is probably something like 7.75. Pretty much back to the grim days of last October that it felt like we’d left behind.

I’m lobbying tomorrow and Thursday in favor of banning consumer sales of trigger leads. Hopefully that goes better than the market has been.
    Woof.

Hader had a bit of an adjustment period when he landed in SD as well.   Not freaking out yet.

Yes- he’s basically had one bad month (before the Astros) in his entire career and it was that first month in SD.

Buying puts on.....everything?  Alternately I have some money in a predictions site Kalshi that works the same way as PredictIt. The "yes" bet on a fed hike in 2024 is currently at $0.16, so you could make ~5X your money.

What can you top out at- like $1,000?  That feels like a small emotional hedge (and it’s starting to look potentially like a good bet)

I strictly follow the US10Y.  Wild to see it back up at 4.70% this morning.  Seems like it wants to head to 5.00%.  We're only in April and no cuts on the horizon until late summer / early fall.

Also, I despise this is the market real estate market now.  Everyone is obsessed with the Fed and the key rate because everyone is putting rate bets on.  Need to end pretend and extend, wash out the losers, reset values, and move on.

Dude. No cuts incoming in summer. Maybe October. Maybe. But doubt it.
