  1. Well that's a rip off. Also, every month? My wife gets her hair cut like twice a year.
I don't go every month. I go 2 to 3 times year. It's all about quality. When I go for a haircut, I'm usually doing something drastically different. I had the same guy in Houston for 4 years. I paid 150 per cut then.
  2. I did the rough math this morning, and I'm embarrassed by how much we'll save in April (household of 2, live in Manhattan).
$2000-$2500 on eating/drinking out and other entertainment (offset somewhat by increased grocery bill)
    $300 on gym memberships
    $200 on dry cleaning
    $150 on haircuts
    $120 on subway card
    ~$100 on dog walking
Plus we canceled a pretty expensive 2 week trip overseas in May.
Of course I'm bored out of my fucking mind and would gladly trade the savings for my freedom back, but it is a nice consolation prize.
I haven't sat down and figured out savings in April/May, I'd ballpark it at about 5k per month as I had trips in both months that were canceled.

However, I am going nuts and in desperate need of a vacation, so money good, state of being, poor.
  3. Two separate research efforts have concluded it's most likely the virus showed up in NYC in February and was largely imported from Europe.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/08/science/new-york-coronavirus-cases-europe-genomes.html
So this thing had not been floating around unchecked in NYC for months by the time things started to get bad. It's obviously very contagious with the ability to really strain healthcare capacity quickly.
Do agree - I think everyone does - that it is far more widespread that testing numbers indicate. That's why testing, both for infections and for antibodies, is so critical to getting public life going again. We really don't know what we're dealing with right now and we really should have more information before we make a move like that.
The problem is that is based on KNOWN cases. We believe the infected numbers are significantly higher than the reported known cases. So while that may be true for the known cases, there are still a lot of folks untested, so who knows the origin of those.

  4. Reacted in January doesn't mean shutdown. We should have reacted. We should have been preparing in January and February and early March.  We only had to shutdown because we didn't react properly.
You can generate every single current case (reported and estimated) by starting with one case in mid January and doubling it ever 3-5 days (the observed doubling period). I doubt NYC had more than a handful of cases in January.
I think we had more than we will ever know, California too. Chinese New Year. Folks from China were still coming in, and both NYC and the West Coast have direct flights from Wuhan.
  5. My wife and I both work from home. Again, I hope it's not another 6 months. I expect we can have testing and therapies in place over the next 60-90 days. But my family's safety comes first, before anything else, and certainly before going out to eat, to movies, concerts, sporting events, vacations, flying, etc.. I want to get those things open and back to normal as much as anyone else. I hope we can all come together and work toward making that a reality through mass testing, effective therapies and treatments, and masks, lots and lots of masks.

To be frank, we SHOULD have had testing and therapies in place in the FIRST 60-90 days. China's purposeful shitty info campaign along with our amateur hour federal govt is why we are still in lockdown.

There is ZERO excuse for the testing clusterfuck.

Staub 4qt down to $84 after coupon (77ea if you buy 2 and follow the deal instructions with a filler item), is the lowest I've seen it. Agreed the white looks the best, I have white and red.

This applies to damn near any purchase. Buy what you feel is the best value for you.

And thank you.  Knew about the For You code, but didn't know they had the cocotte. Thanks for the heads up.  Ordered this and got Avios from BA all at the same time.  With tax, was 92 and change.

  7. The geologists and PEs will most likely correct me, but isn't there a risk of damaging the reserves if too many wells in the region shut in? I know stopping the flow of a well too much or producing too much can both damage the reserves. Any new production coming online this year probably needs to pump.

Shutting in a well temporarily can damage it, with production never getting back to the pre-shifting levels.

Thanks for posting and a lot of valid info but it doesn’t mention anything about a timeline for widespread antibody testing with reliable tests not imported from China. It’s maddening that this is taking so long and the updates we do get are so vague.

This right here.  It should not take so fucking long.  What is the major hold up?

I think the anti-body test is a prick of the finger. Also, the newer, 15-minute COVID-19 tests do not sound as invasive as the swab through the back of your head.

Yes, the antibody test is a prick of the finger.  And that can be done via a home kit.  They have home kits for diabetics.

The lack of movement on all fronts on testing is a fucking embarrassment.

  10. So, I am optimistic that I will get to take a vacation in October (I have 8 weeks, and our company changed its vacation policy in light of COVID-19, so it is use it or lose it).

I am planning a 3 week trip to France.  We shall see.  Have not booked anything, nor will I until closer to time.

That being said, since we had to cancel Spain for Easter, we are planning on going in 2021.  Oh yeah, fuck this WuFlu.
