  1. In my experience the safety inspections have become increasingly perfunctory. Last few times I didn’t even get out of my vehicle. No real brake test, no horn or wiper check, no tire tread depth check etc.

  2. “Yesterday, Governor Abbott held a briefing and press conference in Perryton to provide an update on the state's ongoing response following severe storms and tornadoes in the region. The Governor also updated his disaster declaration to include additional counties in Northeast Texas impacted by the severe weather to continue to provide the full support of the State of Texas during recovery and rebuilding efforts.”

Are you familiar with another Texas landscape scene artist named Palmer Chrisman? I have one my Dad bought at an auction a couple of decades ago, a bluebonnet scene. They were colleagues together in the medical field.

No, but looks like his auction items for larger pieces go in the 1800 to 2800 range. Bluebonnets seem to always add to the price.
  4. “Dallas area” covers a lot of ground.

We are in downtown a lot. Stay at The Westin. Their corner suites are really freakin’ nice.

Also, the Statler building is great with a ton of amenities. It’s a Hyatt.

Also has residences there. We are considering moving in there within the next 2 years.

Stayed at The Statler for Old 97s county fair a couple of times. As a Mid Mod fan we really enjoyed it. For a little less expensive options in that area we like The Indigo on the other side of The Garden Park and The Magnolia at Pegasus Plaza.

  5. Has the Fairfield Lake debacle been discussed here? My FIL is a huge outdoorsman and has been following this pretty closely. Keep in mind, he's a pretty staunch GOP'er and my MIL watches Fox News quite religiously (or did until my wife started pushing back on Fox's lies to her parents directly) and will vote Republican no matter who is on the ballot. He hates Paxton but still voted for him because the Dem candidate wasn't "qualified" in his mind. Ridiculous.
At any rate, according to FIL the state had myriad chances to buy this property in the past but Abbott fiddle-farted around and a Dallas-based family developer purchased the property for $100M+. Realizing his mistake, Abbott is now taking the property via imminent domain. Looks like the state has offered $25M to the family.
I post merely because this appears to be another black eye on Abbott/GOP "leadership" in this state.

DALLAS, Texas (KWTX) - An attorney representing Todd Interests, a Dallas-based firm that acquired the land in and around Fairfield Lake State Park, on Thursday blasted the decision made by a commission of unelected officials to seize the property using eminent domain, and warned Texans that if the state can do this to the Todd Family, it “can happen to any rancher, farmer, or property owner in Texas.”
On June 11, TPWD voted unanimously to use eminent domain to seize the 5,000-acre property that includes Fairfield Lake State Park. The Texas Tribune reported the move came after months of stalled legislative efforts, and failed negotiations to secure the park.
Todd Interests reportedly purchased the property for $110.5 million, and has retained the services of the Carrington Coleman law firm. Todd Interests rejected an offer of $25-million from the state for the property, TPWD previously said.
In 2021, Vistra Energy decided to sell the 5,000 acres of land in Freestone County, including land it had leased to the State of Texas for Fairfield Lake State Park, after the State declined multiple opportunities to purchase the property, said Monica Latin, the managing partner at Carrington Coleman.
Latin said TPWD is taking 1,821 acres previously leased to the State, and an additional 3,200 acres of land and surface water, including water rights, from Todd Interests.
The attorney disputed allegation made by TPWD commissioners that the owners of the property had been non-responsive, or even hostile. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” Latin said.
“The Commission showed no interest in acquiring the park for the citizens of Texas when it had the opportunity,” she said, “Now, they wrongly deflect blame through a series of false statements to the press and the people of Texas about their conduct.”
Latin said Texas Parks and Wildlife requested, and received, an appropriation from the Texas State Legislature for the “proposed acquisition of Fairfield Lake State Park and other strategic state park acquisitions.”
The state agency, according to Latin, specified in its request that the funds “would only be used for acquisitions from willing sellers.”
Latin further said the Legislature rejected “efforts to condemn this very property ... Because that is not the way the State of Texas treats its citizens and its property owners.”
“Last Saturday, the unelected (TPWD) Commission voted to condemn approximately 5,000 acres - three times as much land as the former State Park, and every inch acquired by the Todd family,” Latin said.
“The Commission stated that the use of eminent domain is ‘extraordinary,’ ‘unusual,’ and reserved ‘for the rarest and most unique circumstances.’ But the only extraordinary, unusual, or unique circumstance here is an unelected group of commissioners’ irresponsible use of power to deprive private landowners of their rights, to accomplish by force an outcome not supported by the Texas Legislature,” she said.
“If the Commission can do this to the Todd family, they can do it to any rancher, farmer, or property owner in Texas. We hope incoming Commission leadership will see the disastrous precedent this decision would set, and the dangerous message its actions send to all Texans.”

How does FIL feel about land seized via Eminent Domain for the border wall?
  6. Heretic!  Blasphemer!
The e-bike threads on mtbr were amusing (now they're just a beating).  Off-road, I can see their utility where there's a lot of downhill and a climb price to be paid (especially in terms of time, if not exertion), but around DFW, I don't see the point other than sheer laziness.  I see a ton of them at Northshore, though.

I only do Urban Assault on an E-bike. Never ridden on any MTB trails.

You are supposed to get a permit from USACE to ride on Northshore.

  7. iirc his brother turned him in. wonder if he got a reward. didn’t he find teds writings in the attic and matched it up to the editorial? i may be misremembering.

Actually it was his sister in law Linda who told David (TKs brother) that some of his letters had similarities to his manifesto.

David loved the Big Bend area and had/has? a place near Terlingua. He lived there for a while off the grid before moving to NYC. They eventually built a cabin and would vacation there frequently.

I met David one night at La Kiva.
  8. Fabulous. I miss the music world that had a spectrum that could produce a minute and a half song like this. Made my day. Thanks.

Yeah. Interesting band. They usually dropped some weird little gem on their albums. Got turned on to them from a cool 1981 Ze Records disco/punk/funk compilation

  9. Everybody should go to jail once as a young person.  Just for a night.  It will convince you to generally be a law abiding citizen for the rest of your life.

  10. I had no choice.  Born and raised in/near St. Louis -- from HS keggers on it was Budweiser.  No Bud Light, just heavy.  That was it.  Oh, and Michelob, but that was too pricey for kids.
Coors wasn't even AVAILABLE in the state.  Allegedly, they had to truck it around through Iowa/Arkansas.  (That does seem to be an interstate commerce violation, but Coors sure wasn't distributed anywhere, regardless.)

  11. PGA officials must have been really scared of the lawsuits. That is the only explanation to this bullshit.
If I were the players I'd want the lawsuits to proceed to see how much bullshit ($$$) the officials were hiding and banking.

They were already found to be in violation of antitrust laws in the 90s but no action was taken.
  12. This.
He doesn't have to campaign.  He just has to "be Trump," and issue the occasional outrageous/hateful/stochastic terrorist call to arms statement.  That's it.  That's all he has to do, and he WALTZES into the GQP nomination.  There is no party but the party of Trump.

He will have plenty of time to campaign once he’s elected.
