  1. Well, he doesn't use a real drum kit most of the time (if not all the time). Just the stand-up drum with the "sticks" that are the ones that flay out -- not sure what they're called. Oh, and he had a Weber kettle charcoal grill up there that he played near the end. Gordon can play pretty good guitar. Ritchie is the bassist and I thought he usually used a stand-up but it's been awhile since I'd seen them. He basically had an acoustic guitar with what seemed like very loose strings to get his sound.
They're still a shit-load of fun to see live. I highly recommend it if you like that first album.

Two snares and brushes mostly. Also a Weber and a wood box.
  2. I liked that album in my college rock days.  Caught the Femmes on the first Lollapalooza tour (Dallas).  While they weren't a particularly GOOD band (as players) they sure had a sound.  I don't think I ever saw them again, glad to see they're still out on the road.

I think Brian Ritchie is pretty talented bassist. Assuming he was using an Ernie Ball Earthwood most of the time. Tone on that thing is sweet.
  3. I think they couldn't use the AAC because of the uncertainty of playoff scheduling for the Mavs and Stars. It was always a ticket for Starplex. I prefer it to the AAC which is pretty cavernous.

Never been to a concert at the AAC. Saw them twice at Reunion(underrated as a music venue IMHO) and they were outstanding.

Haven’t been to Starplex in ages but from my experience, if you were somewhere between the stage and the soundboard it sounded good. If you were between the soundboard and the lawn the sound got muddy.
  4. Can’t remember the last time I heard this, but then heard it playing playing softly in the background of Bullet strain. I suddenly flashed back to reclining in the back seat of my folk’s ‘74 Dodge Coronet as they were sipping Jax beers at Ann’s Drive Inn on State Line Blvd.

It sounded so plaintive, yet soothing and stuck somewhere in the back of my tiny brain.

So, here is a Spanish language cover of a loosely translated English language cover of a 1963 Japanese language smash hit.

  5. The Cure was great last night. Felt like Robert's voice got better as the show went on. Starplex was oversold and the lawn was billowing over into the reserved seating area. So many hits. They played for 2:45. Went on at 8:15, done right at 11pm. Sold setlist of both hits and deeper cuts. Younger kids loved it. Both Robert and the opener's lead singer complained about how hot it was. And this was only muggy May and not sweltering August.

Didn’t they move it to Starplex because of the Stars playoffs?
  6. Ah yes, another worse than specious argument: We can't talk about mass shootings and gun control because of Chicago's murder rate. Ideologue talk.

Chicago has around 2.7 million population.
According to their Chamber they had 30.7 million foreign and domestic visitors in 2021.
The amount of people not murdered there is pretty impressive!
  7. Another Yellow-Crowned Night Heron...

Saw one of those sitting on the edge of a pond while we were walking the dogs this morning.

Figured it was some kind of Heron. Beautiful bird.

  8. At Lajitas.  It is beautiful.  The drive from Alpine is long, but very curvy and scenic. Lots of change in elevation too.  I got a kick out of all of the rental 'teepees' where people do them as an air-BNB to 'sleep under the stars.'  I am not a golfer, but am enjoying the visit just the same.  Read some of the reviews of the resort online and was expecting very rustic accomodations.  Whoever wrote the reviews is spoiled AF.  The rooms are nice and everything on the grounds is easily accessible on foot.
CSB, Colleague has cousin who owns a ranch about 40 miles from here and they came by to say hi.  I asked him what they raised, in true Texican fashion, he retorted, "HELL!"

Lots of nice short hikes/walks at the State Park.

  9. So even if you don’t want anything to do with this bullshit you have to put to a vote? Another illustration of why you need to vote in these local elections.

SECTION 3. Each board of trustees of a school district and each governing body of an open-enrollment charter school shall take a record vote not later than six months after the effective date of this Act on whether to adopt a policy authorizing a campus of the district or school to employ or accept as a volunteer a chaplain under Chapter 23, Education Code, as added by this Act.

  10. Replace counselors with chaplains? What’s the difference between chaplains and youth ministers, aka the profession seemingly most likely to include child rapists? What could go wrong?

Well, Hinijosa did put an amendment in that says they can’t have any sexual predator convictions and have to have background checks.

Who decides if they employ chaplains? School Boards?
  11. The good news is that I have zero interest in HT, as a general proposition, and even less for this particular room.  But it is the living room/den, so some amount of casual tv watching will occur.
There is a mancave/study/media room that is perfectly set up for a TV/HT.

My den is kinda similar. Assuming you will put a small seating area in front of the FP, I would put a nice slim cabinet to the right of the FP. TV and soundbar on top on a swivel stand. I would lose the mantel(looks tacked on) and put a nice oil painting above the FP.
