  1. It means less without telling us how many homers?
  2. I know. That’s why I mentioned LBJ earlier. And You’re right, they are similar so there’s no guarantee. I’d expect growing pains. For a guy without experience in the role, I’d tightly define that closer role until acclimated. Give me 3 outs. I don’t need 1.1, I don’t need 2. I’m saving you for the 9th. That’s your task. And for tomorrow’s game, that mentality starts today. His best chance of success is not waking up tomorrow thinking or not knowing he’s coming in the 7th, 8th or 9th. Alternatively, I’m ok with closer by committee. If the matchups are right that day and Burke or Tole or Shaw are working, then let them finish it. But we have to accept that’s not ideal, and it’ll probably fail some too. Those guys don’t struggle with control to that extent either so you can afford to be more flexible with them. Like you said with Sthele, we were winning as it was. It was not perfect, but he didn’t implode in the 1st. He exhibited control. His K rate was good.
  3. Seems Harley’s walks go up when he starts. He was kicking butt out of the pen and could eat up lots of innings. He had a bit of good fortune his last start in that he didn’t give up more due to control issues. If he’s more effective getting you 5 when coming in the 3rd versus starting, go with that. There’s really no difference than flip flopping that other than the traditional starting role mindset. Today we had problems because our starter gave us nothing on a day when extra base hits would be very limited. If he just gets us to the 3rd, we’re probably ok.
  4. Looking at that Morehouse game log, he may suffer from some inconsistency with respect to his role. Is he going an inning, an inning plus? And back to Tech, he was great in long relief then the next day, he didn’t start the 9th and only got an out due to a tagout at home. If he’s your closer, let him get acclimated to getting 3 outs. Today he was good getting out of the 8th but fell apart after thinking about it for a half inning then returning to the mound I’d go back to Gordon, Sthele, and LBJ with Hurley as the long relief guy. It’s probably too early to give up on Morehouse as closer. Define their roles and let them work through some of it. Shaw probably didn’t get the call because he’s been out and pitched last night. He and his health are a huge piece. He might be able to close even. Then there’s Witt.
  5. Yes. LBJ hasn’t shown that he struggles doing so for 1 inning. Yet.
  6. He may be best when following up someone who is not like him. Probably pairs real well with LBJ
  7. Hey, did y’all know that the last time BU had the tying run come to the plate was the 3rd inning? And that was with the score 3-0. We scored 20% more runs than they did. We have all our bullpen arms available. Wind was blowing out. Our defense missed 3 outs that I can recall. Our offense had missed opportunities. We were on the road. We were on grass. We are playing a team that has nothing to lose. Hookems right in that we don’t have the bats to beat down the opponent. But we do have capable bats 1-9. And we actually have some ability to hit beyond those guys. Pierce is not shitting his pants at some adversity. Letting Grubbs finish the game was a net positive. We won most importantly. But you don’t know if he’ll be called on in a crucial situation later. He will be better off in the long run for it if he is. And using him as an example, he’s pitched poorly in two games straight games. Neither impacted the final outcome. That’s one way to manage so that come season’s end your team is stronger. There are two things you don’t want come seasons end. Tired bodies and limited numbers of contributors. I’d say Pierce is doing his best job to date managing that.
  8. I think prior to tonight Lummus and Walbridge had given up 1 run in their last 9 combined innings. That run was a homer to a guy that averages a homer every 10 ABs. They may not pitch in the postseason, but that shouldn’t be dictated by whatever happened tonight. They may both be lefty-lefty matchup guys. I know Lummus was not used in that capacity tonight. Our starters still aren’t going deep so until that happens you will have to steal innings. That’s what we did tonight. And in a bit of irony, OU gave up 7 in the 10th to Tech tonight. 6 college games in 8 days with 8 in 10 is a big ask in college baseball. You take those wins and move on.
  9. Getting all exotic flip flopping Campbell and EK.
  10. You get no argument from me. I was just trying to fit in trying to find the negative in the situation. For Sorrell anything less than 8 sacks is disappointing. I’m actually thinking 10, but that might get Rimbo coming in to tell me I’m full of shit. Then when he gets 8 and Ryan Watts 2 more, he can rip me a new one saying how unrealistic that prediction was. We don’t blitz LB much but maybe that’s cause we didn’t have that guy. If Hill is that good a rusher, I’d think he’s coming off the edge a lot. Probably reduces his thinking and allows him to attack. That’s where pass rushing LBs generally make their mark. I’m not concerned about the edge guys. There will likely be mixing and matching, but that’s ok from my perspective. That rotation helps keep them fresh anyway. It sounds like Hill may get some run then the arguments can ensue about whether it’s 3 or 4 man front cause he’s a LB. 10 wins minimum.
  11. Well he hasn’t pitched just yet. But it’s probably in his best interests to show the scouts how far he’s come. At the same time, the worst thing is to come back too soon. As long as he leads us to the national championship I don’t care when he returns.
  12. Sorrell must suck if a true frosh LB is a better pass rusher. Damnit Edge is a problem again.
  13. I find a little humor in this. We can’t sit him a game unless he’s suspended.
  14. You’re likely not going to be wowed by Texas. They are competitive with a very good #1 starter. Lots of arms that have gotten keys outs. We don’t have last years power, but we have power. Even if they made the CWS, you might not feel like they’re that caliber. This team may have more momentum heading into the post season than last years though. Yes Hansen was good but was a little inconsistent. Stevens for the last half of last year was consistently poor if anything. Last years bullpen was all over the place. In the CWS, hitting and pitching were poor.
  15. Maybe that’s why Galvan started Tuesday.
  16. Flores doesn’t look good. But he did have a big hit last Friday. Thomas looks kinda comfortable at times, but he hasn’t had a multi game run of production. It does feel like maybe he’s getting it together, but it just hasn’t happened. Not sure people remember the Augie years with the porous hitters at the bottom of those batting orders. It’s just hard to be productive 1-9. Last year was a special kind of offense. Find the hot hand and ride em for that part of the order.
  17. Thomas is a bigger problem than Daly. ODowd is probably a bigger problem than Daly. Flores is a bigger problem than Daly. Duplantier has shown about the same, and we have no idea whether he can play defense. Harp on Dalys lack of power but Carlson has no XBH in 28 plate appearances. Daly is playing the premium defensive position. I didn’t see tonight and was working while watching Tuesday but Dalys defense versus OSU and AF had some damn good moments. If we struggle against lefties, Thomas and ODowd should sit first. We probably should play matchups, but that’s not really Pierces thing. It might be now. You’ve got to play them enough that when called upon to play you give them a fighting chance to succeed. Don’t expect the bottom of the order to save the day. Offensively we’ve been poor the last week because EK and Powell have been poor. There will be big hits out of the part of the order though. Just who knows when.
  18. It’d be interesting to know what weighs in on the decision to play some guys. Are they looking good in practice or is it totally situational. We have quite a bit of looks good one outing then not so much the next.
