There's this old story about sobriety and AA. I can't remember if it was a Clancy or Chuck C. recording, but I laughed when I heard it because it so perfectly described my experience. If I'm the man who finds that he can't stop and stay stopped own my own power, it's akin to my being lost at sea; treading water on the open ocean. Two idiots come into view and they appear to be sitting above the water in an imaginary boat, rowing with imaginary oars. They ask if I want to get in and row to shore using their 12 steps. I tell them they're nuts and to leave me alone. I keep treading water hoping to be rescued by a "real boat" until I'm just about to slip under the water and I finally accept their extended hand. Somehow now I'm sitting in that imaginary boat and they tell me to start rowing, but there aren't any oars. These idiots tell me it doesn't matter; just row. I "row" like they tell me, knowing its not going to work, but to my suprise, slowly a boat appears underneath me and oars materialize. The more I row and watch them row, the more I realize that what they have is real, whether I understand it or not.

No idea if this will help but it helps me when I can put it in practice. I view myself and interactions with family (or whoever is difficult and creates a feeling of dis-ease) as if I were watching a movie. Sandy Beach referred to it as a spiritual being having a human experience. I TRY and ask myself, what am I going to learn from this? What tools can I put in practice here? Viewing the dialogue as an unaffected third party watching a skit....uninvested in anything but being kind and tolerant to the best of my ability. It's interesting. It takes the power out of the circumstances and the future-casting. I ask for my higher power's help in remembering that it is nothing more than me walking through a normal human experience (even if my family is full of wackadoos). I wish I did it better and more frequently, but it does help when I apply it. My sponsor continues to tell me that all my god wants is for me to chop wood, carry water, and leave the outcome to him.

Still U.S. govt. property and would be an NFA item to boot. They’ll never legally enter the US again and if they can source .45 acp they’re probably already in the fight. But, it’s fun to imagine that the CMP would offer them like Garands and 1911s.

Not sure how to post the link or photos, but there are some fascinating pictures floating around showing where the Russian Wagner troops have found a cache of old weapons stored in salt mines near Ukraine border. There are crates of new Thompson M1A1 sub guns from the 40’s that we sent over in the Lend-Lease program that never made it into the fight and have been sitting there for 80 years.

My G40 is smooth and I like it. Haven't shot the 20 but my experience with the 40 would lead me personally in that direction. YMMV

My son has just begun using Huntin Fool. I’ll be interested in your follow-up posts. He’s young so he’s decided to go all in for the long game on tags with the goal to hit some of those 20 year waits. I’m hopeful things work well for both of you!

Make that a trifecta. The issue I have experienced with medication is that you don't necessarily know the good it's doing until you stop taking it, and when dealing with addiction, depression, or bipolar disorder, that is a risk. It's pretty easy to go off of blood pressure medication, experience some ill effects, and decide to go back on. One can't safely predict with any certainty how the untreated mind will react if there is a mental illness, or how the untreated addict will respond. Akin to starting to feel so good that a recovered alcoholic puts their program and step work on the back burner or stops all together....forgetting to do what go them to the good place. That's a steep and slippery slope. I know I'm not guaranteed a comeback if I let myself get too far down the path away from emotional (and eventually physical) sobriety. The fuckin' stops when the gorilla is done with me.....I don't get to decide.

6.5cm. That cartridge is already in my stable so that'll make it easy. I've never made long distance shooting a priority. Plenty of "I wonder if I can hit that" shots over the years but have never actually worked on stretching things out while shooting for precision.

Anyone shooting a Ruger RPR? I've agreed to purchase a cache of guns from an older friend who isn't shooting anymore and the RPR / chassis style is the only one that's not already in my wheelhouse. I've never been a long range bench shooter but I'm intrigued. Has a 15-60x Vortex Golden Eagle on it and I'm curious what to expect. Any recommended upgrades? Curious on any hacks to properly adjust the stock to my best shooting settings. I've never used an adjustable stock for precision shooting and am not sure if it is by feel alone, or if there may be a science to it for best performance.

Same......"I'm powerless over that." or "Not my circus." If you need to convey that you do care, you can follow-up by saying that you are certainly there to listen to how it is affecting the other party, even if you are powerless to make any changes. Pro-tip.....Don't use the circus line when the issue is regarding her family!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Massad Ayoob has some really good videos and articles on safely carrying, including the pros and cons of both a chambered round and appendix carry. Everyone has their own opinions. I'm of the belief that since modern handguns don't fire when dropped, an AD will be caused by carelessness or poor technique and training. A double action revolver with the hammer down is one additional layer of safety. The same goes for a double action semi-automatic.

Do you FIRE? Financial Independence, Retire Early
Reagan1k replied to UTGrad98's topic in Business and Markets
Another benefit of having and refilling a market-neutral current income bucket (beyond neutralizing the sequence of return risk), is that it frees one to make the most tax efficient decisions in both up and down markets. Loss harvesting, etc. isn't nearly as effective if the proceeds are being spent rather than reinvested. -

Single biggest mistake one can make in any retirement scenario- failing to take this into account. That's why looking at average returns isn't all its cracked up to be and people get whipsawed. Monte Carlo simulations can take this into account and help you plan accordingly or at least understand the real level of risk. It's pretty staggering what 3-4 years of negative returns (even single digit) will do to a portfolio with income requirements. -
That's a big deal right there. Being able to see that in real time can be a turning point. I don't have to interject myself into a lot of situations. By not doing so, I avoid conflict, and therefore all the issues to come with it. Page 62 of the book was hammered on by my sponsor. He pointed out that there was a dash between selfishness and self-centeredness, meaning they were two independent things......Even if I wasn't "selfish" in some situations, that I am self-centered in thinking I always have to interject myself in others' lives and their drama. Not my circus, not my monkeys. God.....if I could only remember that 100% of the time life would be so peaceful.

I spent my entire drinking life trying to control and enjoy my drinking-simultaneously. I assumed everyone felt the way I did when I drank...that part of drinking was always wanting more, to the point of oblivion, and that everyone had to exert willpower to stop once they started. I believed, based on how I felt when I drank, that everyone drank to get drunk and that not getting drunk required a force of will. In my mind, going to happy hour after work to have one beer, or having a drink at brunch and then not drinking more the rest of the day was uncomfortable to everyone and was the price you had to pay. I saw others as "resisting the craving" better than I, and that I just didn't have the willpower or the magic, mental trick to stop the urge. I had no idea that ~90% had no such urge or craving and that the drink was just that...a drink that they could take or leave. To me, it was the axis on which my world spun....mentally and physically. It was such a huge relief for me to come to understand that allergy aspect, and to realize that I was comparing myself to people who had an entirely different experience when they drank.
-
I don't know what to call it, but I've sure as shit got an adverse reaction to it when it gets in my system. To this day, even with all I've learned about myself and how my reaction is different than that of a normal drinker, it still boggles my mind when I see someone walk away from an unfinished drink without giving it a thought, or push it away and say that they've had enough.

YMMV, but for me, it isn't just the number of days, but it's the quality of those days. Granted, before I walked into the rooms it had been some years since I even tried to have a dry day. But, when I would try way-back-when, I would be so miserable to be around, most people wanted me to drink. That's the rub. Can I stop and stay stopped without losing my mind? I couldn't without help. My periods of being dry while being even remotely pleasant (to others and to myself) became shorter and shorter, until they became only hours and then minutes. Disappearing was nice, but at the end all I wanted was to have the volume turned down a little. The returns began to diminish. Escaping was no longer possible when the magic that a drink held began to fade. I was settling for simply a lower level of misery and then it quit working all together. I was miserable sober and I was miserable drunk. Exactly like the book says - "Some day he will be unable to imagine life either with alcohol or without it. Then he will know loneliness such as few do. He will be at the jumping-off place. He will wish for the end."

I missed on a 788 in .222 recently and I'm kicking myself. The 788 was a cheap-ass short action rifle with a shitty trigger and safety, but for some weird twist of fate the gun-gods made them shoot one-hole groups out of the box. People have caught-on and their prices have gotten a bit steep at auction but I'd love to have a .222 in that rig for knocking around. I have the .243 and .223 but forgot to put in an absentee bid on this .222 and let it slip by. Cool little cartridge.

Yeah! That's pretty fine!

Beautiful stock!

Color me jealous! I’d love to have a 42! That’s a beautiful shotgun.

I don't want to fuck around and find out, either. I'm sure there is a line I could inch toward without danger, but for me, the juice isn't worth the squeeze. Accidentally drinking someone else's drink is nightmare fuel for me, so consciously choosing to drink or eat something that would put alcohol in my system is a non-starter for this drunk. In my way of thinking, non-alcoholic beer is for non-alcoholics, and I've surrendered the right to dance around the edges of alcohol consumption. Same with THC - I'm not willing to take the chance that it might alter my perception and allow me to think a drink is a good idea. Some people might do fine on the marijuana maintenance plan, but I'm not willing to be a crash test dummy since a do-over isn't guaranteed.
-
Correct! That’s the only reason I got this one. I have a fairly disciplined approach at auction and put in bids for probably 50 items for every one I buy. I try pretty damn hard to let them come to me vs. chasing and I try to stay off Gunbroker as a general rule- except to use their sold data for research. I’ve chased a couple of items and paid through the nose but as a rule I don’t get caught up in the bidding action.

Ruger .44 carbine at auction. Late 60’s production. Under $900 all in including buyers premium and shipping. Don’t have a use for it. Just checking a box. Wanted one. Might need to pair it with a Super Blackhawk - probably wouldn’t ever carry both at the same time on the lease but I could pretend I will to justify it.
