  1. The ATV and dirtbike rides are in fact bullshit, they’re dangerous and disrupt traffic and that is the entire goal. It’s OK to point out that dozens of kids on dirtbikes or ATVs shouldn’t be clogging major thoroughfares. As @Bateshorn has pointed out, DC genuinely does have a “teen” disorder problem that regularly metastasizes into real-life consequences for regular people. It’s been a conscious choice by local authorities not to deal with it. That doesn’t mean that deploying the guard is needed, but at the same time people get tired of “just live with it” as a response to stuff that is a real quality of life issue that can be solved.
  2. No, on nearly every level Islam and Judaism are brother religions and Christianity is the odd cousin. This goes for everything from the nature of a singular God, methods and understanding of divine revelation, how to approach sacred texts, the relationship of the faithful to a community, the role of faith in governance and social ordering, and what it means to be part of the faith community. Unsurprising, really, as most of Muhammad’s ideas about monotheism were filtered to him via Judaism.
  3. I do think COVID and the more lenient fed work from home policies did a bit of a number. Tourist areas are fine but it was pretty stark how less foot traffic and legitimate business caused parts of downtown to get— not dicey exactly, but somewhat disorderly. Along with teen lock-ups, Baltimore also mostly dropped its non-prosecution policies in combination with community efforts. They focused on repeat offenders and anyone with weapons. Study after study shows that a tiny minority of people account for a huge amount of crime, everything from violent crime to shoplifting. I don’t give a shit what age you are, if you’re past the third arrest it’s time for you to be ejected from society.
  4. Baltimore has invested in some other stuff too, but the lockup made a difference. There’s no city in the country that has more free/interesting shit available for people so the “nothing to do” shit falls flat. These groups of kids get a thrill by being antisocial where others are being social.
  5. Baltimore has been making some real progress. They’ve expanded drunk tanks and lock up youths who are out past curfew or maliciously loitering for the night and won’t let them go unless someone signs them out. Worth looking at something similar.
  6. I mostly agree with this. MPD has absolutely been cooking the books a bit, especially around crimes in Adams Morgan at night. The leniency on “minor” crime and property damage is a problem. It’s a well known sociological phenomenon that that sort of low-level disorder causes extreme dissatisfaction.
  7. I’ve posted this before but I’m doing it again because it slams and I’ve dialed it in. It may be my favorite thing to make now. Tacos al pastor on the Weber rotisserie. The horizontal trompo is a seven pound pork butt sliced into 1/4-1/2 inch steaks. What put it over the top. 1. Trimming more often even thought it’s a PITA, more crispy stuff made it incredible. 2. Got the salsa how I want it, a tomatillo/serrano/jalepeno mix but blending in an avocado made it the texture I wanted.
  8. Witkoff is truly a bumblefuck.
  9. They almost certainly do have grounds but there are two issues at play: 1. Trump has hobbled the Merit Systems Protection Board and stacked it with his people. 2. The DC appeals court is extremely Trump friendly and is all-in on the “unitary executive” theory, which basically holds that Trump can do whatever he wants with the executive branch and any law that places limits on him in that sphere is unconstitutional. I think not just FBI but a lot of fired employees will eventually get some sort of settlement and maybe back wages but it’s going to have to be under a different admin.
  10. Meta’s AI really killing it with the Q&A.
  11. Sex offenders and people with long sentences aren’t supposed to be at camps per BOP guidelines. There’s absolutely been a deal cut but the only question is what it was. I do think there’s going to be a requirement to tar some non-MAGA world folks.
  12. Non-zero chance of this happening. Will not be at all surprised to see some bullshit cross-Bering commercial project dangled out there. A lot of the pro-Russia people in this admin suffer the delusion that Russia can be an important trading partner.
  13. Feel this one in my bones. My favorite is when I’ve unloaded grocery bags or some shit and was hoping she’d hop out and open the door.
  14. Nailed this one, which I’m using for tacos al pastor mainly but added to my breakfast tacos this morning: 7 tomatillos 3 jalapenos 3 serranos 2 chiles de arbol 2 cloves garlic 1/2 white onion 1 avocado 1 lime Cilantro, salt Boil the tomatillos, peppers, garlic, onion for only about 3-4 minutes till blanched. Blend with the rest. Really clean and fresh that will go well with the big flavors of pastor.
  15. I honestly don’t see this as tremendous leverage for Ukraine talks. It’s a fairly significant achievement (if it holds) and could hopefully resolve an ongoing irritant that has been unproductive for us. But it’s not at this point a core interest for Russia in the way Ukraine is and economic concessions are some of the weakest pieces of bait for Putin. The Russians will not view anything here as especially worth trading away Ukraine aims for.
  16. It is looking like a key element of the proposed deal involves Ukraine handing over territory that Russia does not even control yet— likely a firm red line for any Ukrainian leader. Trump is likely looking to grab any bone Putin will give him so he can cast the two of them as reasonable negotiators while leaving Ukraine out of talks on its own future.
  17. Cambridge and Oxford are both great, although late November is a grim time for Northern Europe. Going there or the Cotswalds then kind of takes the magic out of it; you’re meant to be outdoors or punting on the Cam. What about Normandy? Plenty of direct trains and it can be kind of moody and fitting to stamp around old castles and Cathedrals in the late fall. Mull over some Calvados and beef cheeks.
  18. I think this is pretty close. The top 3 are all great and you can shuffle them around.
  19. There are many extremely influential people in the admin who are legitimately pro-Russian and who want to see them win and the United States governed like Russia is now. There are only a few who are even close to pro-Ukraine. Honestly it’s really only Trump’s vanity that has prevented a total capitulation on this; Putin has played things pretty badly. But it’s going to keep inching in Russia’s favor. Ukraine represents a threat to the MAGA ideologue’s worldview as a nation that democratically wishes to be governed normally and to embed in Western institutions.
  20. I’m trying to think of the old Dem aesthetic. Kennedy cool and modern was for sure a thing, different a bit, and really tasteful. Think the AF1 livery. Clinton’s White House to me looked like a well-done tv set at the time. Of the moment, not ostentatious.
  21. One of the genuinely good things about the old GOP WASP era was the aesthetics, tracing a direct line back to old Yankees’ Protestant aversion to showy displays of wealth. Like driving an old Volvo. A confident and wealthy America secure enough not to rub your nose in it.

    LBGTQ

This is today’s entry in the “cruelty is the point.” No matter your thoughts on the policy, all these people gave over a decade of their lives to the country under the rules that were in place. Shit like this reveals that none of this is about principals or beliefs. It’s about harming people their constituents don’t like for cheap points.
  23. American Lysenkoism. A drug-addled, worm-brain making decisions about science funding based on pure smooth-brained ideology.
  24. Was coming here to post this. Thus far its only the Congress website. Leaves out stuff about habeas corpus, bills of attainder, and the prohibition on states coining money.
