  1. NATO is sending a rapid reaction force to the borders for the first time in history. Part of that includes a Patriot missile battery into Slovakia. I don’t want to get into Visegrad 4 politics but this was almost unthinkable till about a year ago and mostly unthinkable till about two days ago.

And not to freak folks out but the potential of miscalculation and escalation here is real. We aren’t at Cuba levels yet but we’re probably closer than at any time aside from that.

So reports that Putin is becoming increasingly isolated and more angry. Maybe a frustrated oligarch will take his ass out. I’d prefer it actually. Someone killing him with a scythe or many scythes. Maniacal narcissist bully.

In all seriousness, given the execution of this thing and where Russia will stand after, the patriotic thing would be a palace coup. Play Swan Lake for a few hours, then trot someone out to announce that Mr. Putin is dead and the war is over.

Surprised it took this long. I'm going to guess that they hoped they didn't have to do it, but with things not going well...

Yep.  And there’s already partisan engagement in Kyiv suburbs. Russia is going to get nastier now that it’s clear that Ukrainians don’t want them there.

More humanizing stories still coming out.  As Putin is coming in to de-Nazify the country, Kyiv’s chief rabbi broadcast the lights going out in his synagogue as they prepare to evacuate Kyiv on the Sabbath.

Amazingly he doesn't control the skies enough to guarantee that he does. Shocking 3 days in.

I'd also imagine that when it crosses into Ukraine that they won't just convoy straight to battle but uses Lviv as a base to distribute.

Yep.  They had Antonvs loaded and ready to fly in yesterday but were unable to.  Also, one smaller Antonov crashed in Rostov area.

  5. I haven’t seen this mentioned but the Russian health ministry has issued a call to all hospitals and clinics for doctors and medical staff that can be sent to to areas where they will get per diem and housing. Dated after the invasion. Calling for the specialties that would be needed to treat battlefield injuries.

The Kremlin has fucked this up bad.  Based on the numbers of KIA there’s a ton of trauma patients without doctors in Belarus and southern Russia.

  6. On the information front— the Czechs today unplugged their most toxic Kremlin tied disinformation and propaganda sites.  They aren’t bound by the First Amendment and they have significant latitude under laws aimed at preventing the spread of Nazi and Soviet propaganda or whitewashing on the books.  A move that should have happened a long time ago and that more countries should follow.

so question for the smarties - what's the chance that there are substantial US covert operations in Ukraine right now?  does the US step up their efforts behind the scenes on this fight now that the Russians have proven to be beatable with a force that's not even close to on par with the US or even other western allies?  I know troops won't be sent, that's a non-starter (arguments can be made why we should), but what about further support behind the scenes, and plausible deniability at our involvment?

edit - just saw the statement more air defense weaponry coming to Ukraine.

    @956 Worldwide@FartingMonk@InkaUtexas@atomheartbevo

I’d put likelihood of actual boots there in any meaningful way at closer to zero than any other number.  The assistance they could give would be far outweighed by the risk and fallout of that getting exposed and them killed or captured.

Remember that all along the Kremlin has claimed that Kyiv is a puppet government run and manipulated by the U.S. and that this isn’t a fight Ukrainians should care about.

1/3 of Russia’s forces are currently in Ukraine if what BBC just said is accurate. Or I heard wrong. Hmmmm…invade Moscow? Just kidding.

1/3 of what they assembled on the borders is in Ukraine.  Russia can still escalate substantially. Kremlin tried to achieve maximalist aims without committing maximum firepower- likely result of a serious miscalculation in Ukrainian resolve and political will as well as a desire to avoid civilian casualties (which is tied to their miscalculation).

Putin can still escalate and bring much more to bear and likely will absent complete Ukrainian capitulation.

I was wondering what your take is on how intensely the reg's want to fight in this?  I know there's somewhat more anti-American sentiment with this in Russia (i.e. "the Americans ginned it up") but basically are these troops disciplined to take orders, period... or do they feel that this is a joke and Putin is sending them to die or get serverely injured for his own pockets.. etc. ?  We've had some brief speculation on here, but not sure if I've seen you or Ray's take on the will of the military (even the brass).  Just curious, thx.

I don’t believe even most of the Russian regulars want to be there and were fully prepared for what they are in and expected to do. As I mentioned- virtually no NCO culture.  Up to a few days before the invasion these jokers were uploading TikToks from their camps in Belarus while Russia’s official line was “exercises”. They were likely told it was exercises to the last minute.

On Chechens- unconfirmed reports that Kadyrov offered 5K per dead Ukrainian soldier.  These are also not regulars, neither are they ISIS or Islamic militants. They wear Rosgvardia national guard uniforms and are trained in a long history of North Caucasian insurgent-hunting and irregular tactics.  They’re nasty and they will commit atrocities, but important to be accurate about who they are.

so looks like overnight (US time) shit got real?  Zelensky says let's talk, Russia agrees?  talks happening?  another "Go Fuck Yourself" moment or is this the beginning of the end?  reports still saying it's most costly than Russia wanted, but 2 days to a negotiating table isn't that long, maybe the fact that Russia is even willing to talk is a win for the Z-ster?

Russia’s agreement is not a real offer.  It is “surrender then we talk terms after. Also, you’ll be a hostage during the talks.”

I doubt this has made the English news before, but it is a fact that the Bundeswehr has to rent helicopters from the ADAC because it doesn't have enough.

What is the ADAC, you might ask?

    The German version of:

Yep, and also a pretty stark demonstration of how legitimate announcements of moves to EU strategic autonomy are.  The Germans can’t defend Germany— NATO isn’t irrelevant for a long time now on the continent. This type of stuff won’t get picked up in the U.S. but it’s well known on the continent.

Then you should clarify your post because it clearly is directed at Americans generally and not just those living abroad.

It’s not directed at Americans at all, it’s directed at the far-left anti-Americans that are still influential in Europe and who do things like organize protests against NATO deployments.

Do you think the Russian “army” will capture and kill Zelenskyy and his cabinet (those that are staying behind?) holding back tears this morning thinking of all the brave people fighting and there is not a fucking thing I can do about it. I think about their families and especially their littles ughhh…

I don’t know at all what to think. They have allegedly offered negotiations in Minsk— absurd as it’s a country taking part in the invasion.

I think they really want him to sign a surrender document, resign, then have him leave the country. That would be their ideal scenario— it would be far more morale breaking than killing him, which would provoke Ukrainians to fight harder.

If I were Ukraine, I would put a call out to the world to ask for volunteers to come kill Russians. It would put some world leaders in a tougher position if some of their citizens started to get killed in Ukraine in fighting Russians.

You know some badass 80 year old Brit will show up. Might even be a grandma.

Zelenskyy already did basically that today, asked any Europeans with experience to come help.

Putin has offered to go to Minsk to negotiate but only on the condition that the Ukrainian Army surrender first.

  15. Another piece of shit to eat— all these new visa bans on Russians? Yeah, the really loaded folks with villas in Greece, yachts in the southern med, etc.— they either have residence permits or a Golden Maltese passport and this doesn’t affect them.

But yes, making sure babushka from Voronezh can’t come see her daughter who married a Dutch and is raising grandkids— that will get Putin’s goat.
