I was pretty surprised that we took a 3rd portal receiver given that resources are finite and we have several talented underclassmen who are now transfer risks.

The flip side is that our draw for WRs is very strong right now. Our top 4 pass catchers are about to be drafted (3 in the first two rounds), we return a very experienced QB, and our offensive coaching staff is all in place. Seems possible that maybe we did just want two, all three guys wanted in, we didn't need to be the absolute highest bidder, and they were too good to say no to.

We had 8 total receptions worth of returning production at the WR position heading into the SEC, that is not a good formula for success. I would expect for Sark to loosen up the receiver rotation a bit this year since there is a lot of talented depth that needs to get experience. I would like to see us field 6-7 WRs that get consistent snaps. Cook, Bond, Golden, Boldin, Wingo, Niblett and Moore should all be seeing action next season.

I think these AD hires are as much about NIL as hiring coaches.  Schools who are 'win at all cost' think they need someone who knows how to help their coaches work with both legit and non-compliant NIL entities.   Then there is the aspect of how to ensure infrastructure donations keep flowing at the same time as the NIL.  They're two somewhat overlapping constituencies.  People look at Bjork and go "he was able to get Jimbo that #1 class under the table and not get anyone caught, and still got money to build shit".  Now, I don't know how based in reality that perception is, but I think that's the truth serum version of how these admin folks think.  And, I think lots of administrators are afraid of how coming collective bargaining is going to fuck them and want to think their AD guy has some kind of handle on how to navigate that.

Then I think it makes perfect sense to hire the guy who oversaw blowing the top off of every salary and pay structure under his purview while bidding only against himself.

I completely forgot Rueben Owens was still on that roster. His dad was openly complaining all season about his lack of touches. Can't wait to see the drama he helps create next season.

I am sure he will get plenty of touches this next season, which should make for it's own comedy when he starts angling for raises.

Drake Maye reminds me of Jake Locker or Josh Rosen. Or at UT with Tyrone Swoopes. Tons of hype based on perceived strengths that never showed up anywhere that mattered.

Those guys get GMs fired. Losers lose.

Nah, I don't think that is a fair assessment. Maye is legitimately pretty good. Is he a top 5 pick good? Probably not. I could see him being a mid level starter or perhaps have a Colt McCoy like career as a long time backup. This year's QB draft is going to be full of a bunch of fools gold. McCarthy will be out of the league in 5 years, Williams has a very high potential of flaming out, Nix is just not a great quarterback to begin with. Maye is the safest pick, and even then you aren't guaranteed a long term starter. Daniels and Jefferson may be two guys who could have some real impact, but I am still not fully sold on either at the next level. If I had to pick someone  as a starter Day 1, it would probably be Penix, and even he has a bunch of injury concerns.

Not because of the bottom half of the SEC though. Maybe because of Michigan (spoiler: not SEC) and Georgia.

I think Michigan will be a shell of what we saw this year. 22 graduating seniors or draft entries, possibly without Harbaugh, no McCarthy, No Corrum, Defensive unit gutted, OL gutted.

Honest question based on this, Nansen and a few coaches at other schools...do they not sign contracts?  I don't understand how you're allowed to accept a job and one school and then turn around and take a job at another school a few days, or weeks later.

Have you ever heard of an analyst with a buyout?

    McCarthy blurb

in what is other good news here is where he has Texas folks going:

    • 16 - Byron Murphy II
    • 30 - T'Vondre Sweat
    • 33 - Adonai Mitchell
    • 56 - Jonathan Brooks
    • 57 - Xavier Worthy
    • 60 - Ja'Tavion Sanders

for shits and giggles, the only A&M player on the list is Edgerrin Cooper at #55.

Ennis Rakestraw is in his list too at #52. ole chicken legs became a physical CB in college evidently

Murphy at 16 is a good indicator that that mock is total horse shit.

DT will be much worse unless Sark nabs something in the portal. Robinson now wants out of his LOI and January was the only other take. Need to get Davis replaced and get to work.

There was an interesting comment made by Burton on his show this morning. He said that Davis didn't exactly leave the cupboards stacked with players who were ready to go at the DT spot. It makes me wonder if he just spent all of his time on two or three guys throughout the season. I am not creating revisionist history, but I wonder if losing Davis won't be as impactful as some think in the long term if we can get another good developer in the boat.

Poor, poor Alabama is all in their feelings because mean old Texas is poaching their players.

"Texas just declared war on Alabama?" Uh, you started it buddy. Fucking hypocrites with their heads in the sand about how things went down pre-NIL. If only we could go back to the good old days when recruits were bought and sold under the table with a push from sleazebag street agents and uncles with their hands out. I think Deboer is a really good coach, but I am rooting hard for him to fail miserably and get crushed under the weight of Alabama expectations and weak NIL backing.

The modern age of the SEC is here, Nick Saban is gone and Texas just declared war on Alabama.

It’s a lot for me to process in these vulnerable hours after Alabama said so long to the architect of “the process.”

The Longhorns might not officially be in the league just yet — that happens in July — but Texas let everyone know on Sunday that it’s ready to carve out its own sadistic reputation in the most cutthroat conference of them all. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian was once beloved in Alabama, but now he is a Marvel supervillain after lighting Alabama’s soul on fire.

Call him Sark The Shark. Call him Sark The Savage. Sark, the rogue. Sark, the vengeful, insatiable genius.

With the carrot cake commemorating Saban’s retirement still fresh, Texas robbed Alabama of its reputation, its cherished memories and arguably its best player all in the same chess move. In the wake of Saban’s retirement, Iron Bowl hero Isaiah Bond left Alabama for Texas and I still can’t believe it.

Saban retired on a Wednesday and Bond was gone before new Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer could even unpack his travel bag.

DeBoer asked players to give him a chance. Bond said give me some cowboy boots and a black hat.

Bond is the receiver who made the famous touchdown catch in the most recent Iron Bowl. It made him an instant celebrity in the state of Alabama. Fourth and 31 will go down as one of the greatest plays in Alabama football history, but we’re less than two months removed from that magical moment and it all suddenly feels like the charred ruins of a smoldering empire.

There was once a time when being an Iron Bowl hero meant legendary status for life. That era of college football is officially gone.

It was Auburn that was supposed to feel eternal pain after Alabama’s miraculous throw from Jalen Milroe to Bond, but now Alabama will be watching an Iron Bowl legend suit up for Texas next season. Is nothing sacred anymore? Is Bevo the new king of the SEC? How is this even real life?

Being an Iron Bowl legend was once an access card to a different world. In that sense, things haven’t changed. Now it’s a ticket out of town.

I suddenly feel like writing breakup poetry.

Is it too late for Saban to un-retire?

Can His GOAT-ness pull an Urban Meyer?

Hold my beer while I stick my head in the oven.

Take away this pain with a blindside concussion.

Let’s be clear. There should be no hard feelings for Bond. He did nothing wrong in transferring from Alabama to Texas. No one can fault a player for cashing in when they can. The money is out there, so go get it. That’s the game. That’s the American Dream.

College football in 2024 is pure, uncut capitalism. No rules. No regulations. All business.

But it hurts, man. I can’t lie. Even for a grizzled, time-hardened press-box pilcrow like me, this one cuts deep. Players come and they go these days, but that doesn’t mean fans and observers of the game have to enjoy it.

Bond entered the transfer portal shortly after Saban announced he was walking away. Bond later said that Saban’s retirement “100 percent” informed his decision to walk, too. Saban saw all of this coming, of course. When asked about the NIL transfer era, Saban once famously snapped back, “Is this what we want college football to become?”

    Answer: Heck no.

Saban didn’t retire because of the changes to roster management in college football, but losing players to the portal certainly made the job less enjoyable. Coaches dedicate large portions of their lives to recruiting players, and schools spend millions of dollars to fund the chase, and then, after all that, Iron Bowl heroes leave for another school.

Saban was the greatest recruiter the game ever saw. Raising money to pay players is the key to winning for Alabama’s new coach, and there are deeper pockets in the new SEC. What’s an Iron Bowl compared to a Texas war chest filled with gold?

It doesn't appear that Bama is going to handle their fall from the top of the food chain very well. My goodness.

sub a receiver for a tight end and same shit. Who gives a shit about verbiage.

A big part of this is how well Sark thinks the OLine will hold up in pass protection. If he feels good about it, then he can afford to detach that TE and go 4 wides far more often. I don't think he ever felt great with Christian Jones in pass protection. He got beat like a drum in the sugar bowl against that Washington DE on passing downs. Cam Williams should be better there.

I’ve always loved this pic. 1995 aggy game.  The ballboy gets me every time. Plus the Corps guys standing there helplessly.

Ricky was such a monster, I stood next to him on the sidelines his freshman year. I played 6A ball in high school on defense, and I took one look at him and was like.. oh hell no.
