I think it’s important with this staff not to view pieces so statically and pencil in someone like Broughton as “serviceable rotation player.” Two years ago Broughton was unplayable. Last year he was serviceable. What if he continues to get better like most players seem to be doing under this staff and S&C program? Burke and Sorrel fall into that category as well. Fully expect them to stay in their current trajectory and go from pretty good to damn good this year.

This time last year Sweat was not a lock to be a first or second round player. Two years ago we questioned his conditioning and overall drive. Players are getting better under this staff and I think that’s going to be part of the solution to our interior line concerns.

I think it is going to be important for the staff to not think of the defense statically. There is no Sweat on the roster, a 2 gapping immovable monster. It does have athletic DTs. Savea was solid in Nansen’s defense at Arizona that focused on moving the DL. Barring massive improvement or portal signing, that philosophy is going to fit this DL better. You are not going to see the best of Broughton or Collins, if you are asking them to 2 gap

Angles got me, but yeah you’re right

I can see that, based on that picture. I am mostly going off Sark’s comments. He was quite polite in his press conference mentioning Red, Blackshire, and Sydir’s weight, but I would bet the conversations with those players was a bit more elevated behind closed doors

Whatever weight Red is, it doesn’t look sloppy at all so I no longer give a shit about the number

Forgot Zac Swanson was on the roster but he still looks pretty JAGgy

He has a nice little pouch. Compared to Surly posters he is fit as hell, but compared to P5 RB not so much.  Sark said specifically mentioned Red, Sydir, and Blackshire as guys that came in weighing more than the staff wanted.

I’m always amazed at the aggressive ignorance that persists on this board. Not a single one of you has any idea how nutrition, exercise, or steroids work. Kotex and Hornsby, please STFU.

It’s impossible to gain 20 pounds of muscle in a summer.

Never had anyone agree with me and be such an aggressive asshole.. This is truly a surly poster

The “he didn’t commit to a coach he committed to a school” thing is nonsense. If you’ve built a relationship with your position coach and they leave and the school has yet to fill the vacancy it’s natural to go for your second choice with someone you’re familiar with. Coaches matter.

You can say that, but he is leaving without knowing who would be his DL coach at Texas. Imagine if Texas hires someone like Clint Hurtt or Nielsen.  So it is not the most thought out decision. He is not going to be an early enrollee at this point, so waiting a week or 2 to get all the information might have been a good idea. Not to mention that the odds of him having the same position coach during his college career is a coin flip, especially if he goes to his #2 school (Florida). It is his decision and he will have to live with his choice. It could be a good or bad decision.

I actually think they will be better than Brooks by himself. We were very dependent on Brooks and dont forget that Brooks had a really bad fumble against K State. I think they will sort out the fumble issues and we will have a home run hitter in Blue and a reliable every down back in Baxter.

RB is always tough. That is a position that young players can come in and star early.. I would rather have a healthy Brooks, but even that is not a given if he came back. This past year Texas threw the ball to open up the run, so they were never really dependent on the run game. With Quinn back and portal pickups at WR, I am guessing that will be the case this upcoming year. RBs had high YPC vs Washington, because Washington focused on the passing game. Wasington was not the only defense to do that vs Texas, that really helped the run game in 2023. I am guessing that will be the case in 2024, so I am not going to get worried about the RB position.

That just seems like an odd characterization. The cupboard is based on multiple recruiting cycles, early nfl entries and other natural attrition. We also had a generous dt rotation throughout the year.

Bo only had 2 classes here..

2021- Bryon Murphy.. that is just before Bo got to Texas.

2022- His 1st class... Ross (gone), Bledsoe, Bryant, and Swanson... Bledsoe has flashed. Texas needs Bryant to take a leap

2023- Sydir Mitchell. We shall see there

The 22 and 23 guys may make the necessary leap, but right now its hard to look at those classes and say the cupboard in full.

Not a precedent we want to set.

no choice, but to let him out. If Texas forces him to come, he is going to be be a pain in the ass and the media will jump on the story about how mean Texas is.

DT will be much worse unless Sark nabs something in the portal. Robinson now wants out of his LOI and January was the only other take. Need to get Davis replaced and get to work.

To be more specific, the 1 tech is probably the biggest question mark on the team. The 3 tech will probably take a step back, but there is talent, experience, and depth there. There is not much experience at the nose. Asking freshmen to man that spot is less than ideal.

Don’t get me wrong- I love Ford and think he was a great, steady leader at LB but I feel like he dropped off a little from last year and didn’t make as many great plays as he did when he was a junior. I’m hoping there will be no significant drop off next year.

he played with a hernia this year, so it was a down year. LB may not fall at all with GBenda and Ant. Depth is a big question though. Someone like Lafau needs to take a step

I don't disagree with most of this, but I think DE will be much better. Sorrell is coming back and Burke will have another year under his belt. Simmons in the room  will raise the floor considerably and provide motivation to the veterans.

I think DBs probably improve as well. Our most talented players (Williams, Brooks, Muhammad) were young this year and more experience will make a huge difference. Barron coming back is also a huge boon - I assumed he was headed to the NFL. I know he didn't close the year out strong, but he was pretty dinged up and was playing because we didn't have anyone behind him who was worth a damn. Him coming in and playing hurt against Houston probably saved that game.

I think the DBs could be the strength of the defense next year. I am going to assume a secondary of Muhammad, Brooks (could be Muhammad), Barron, Mukuba, and Williams. That is much more versatile secondary, than anything Texas has trotted out recently. Every singly player is capable of playing man.. Only negative is more will be asked of them. Probably going to see more 1 high safety looks, as the run defense takes a step back.

What? Dude has 8 months to get ready for next season... If he hits the gym hard he could easily bulk up.

He could bulk up, but that isnt the same as adding 20 pounds of muscle on a 195 pound frame. That is possible for a kid entering the program, where they are getting the proper nutrition and S&C program for the first time. That doesnt describe Quinn.

It’s not that hard to gain 20 pounds of muscle over the summer if you hit the gym real hard

that and shit ton of steroids. Quin is 20 years old, 195 pounds, and has been lifting for at least 5 years. 20 pounds at this age would be a massive transformation.

What the fuck are you talking about?  This guy has won everywhere he's been.  He took an 8 loss team that lost to fucking Montana to a National championship game in two years.  He's the guy I didn't Bama to hire, because he fucking wins.

Has he ever went out and recruited vs national powers? or had to build up an NIL? Being a coach at a school like Bama is much bigger, than coaching a team and X’s and O’s. Bill Snyder was one of the best football coaches ever, but I doubt he could have won a NC at a blue blood. Being an actual football coach is just a part of running a major program. There is long list of successful coaches, that failed at blue bloods

With a 12 team playoff and NiL, there is no reason to change school.  Oregon and Washington are in the BIG 10.  Have money, can recruit, and at least Seattle is not bumfuck Alabama.  Oregon maybe.  Also, no one with current success is taking that job.  It is a guarantee they will be fired bc those red necks have gotten used to Saban winning at an unprecedented level in an era where they cheated their asses off.  There is a reason Saban called it quits.  He knows he can’t win at that level anymore given the advantages he had are gone.  Even if the next coach wins 9-10 games, that fan base is so delusional with their expectations.

I think he is a great coach, but I am not sure he is the type of guy that can organize NIL and build a recruiting machine to be a the top of the SEC. He maybe better off in the NFL or at a school like Washington.
