I mean I've been sunshine pumping for next year but 12-2 is not the floor lol

#2 is a ranking that initially makes you recoil because of the losses Texas is taking with Sweat-Murphy-Ford on defense and with all of its pass catchers on offense. Then you look at what has already been done in the portal, retaining Alfred Collins, recruiting, etc. and see it is probably survivable. And then you look at what other top programs are losing and all of a sudden you're back around to Texas being right there.

But yeah - floor? Easy enough to see Texas lose at Michigan and lose to Georgia. We avoided a signature Sark head scratcher this year, not a guarantee that happens again. While Texas should be favored, OU is pretty much always a tossup and any of the four November games jump out as a plausible place for a wtf loss. To me I think the floor is 8-4. I think they'll be better than that but it's within the realm of possibility.

11 wins is the ceiling for the regular season and that is generous.

Harbaugh definitely played "fuck around, find out" for much of the game.  For the life of me, I could not figure out why he didn't use McCarthy's legs in the RPO/Roll Out game to offset the heavy boxes the Huskies were setting up on first down.

That is a Michigan tradition dating back to Bo Schembechler. They tend ot be conservative and keep games tighter, than they need to be..

I’m not saying throw it AT the pylon, I’m saying for Quinn to throw it in the space between AD and the pylon.

Look at AD as he crosses the goal line. The defender is still far off. Yes the play call is a fade, but why not adjust the throw toward the front side of AD when the defender is on the opposite side?

Like I said, we have 0 idea of the adjustments that Sark allows or the team works on. I am just confused to why Mitchell opens to the inside with the DB playing inside leverage. Quite honestly we do not know what kind of break the DB will make. He was to the spot before AD. For this to be a TD, Ewers had to hit Mitchell on the outside shoulder with a frozen rope on the turn. That is something the Mahommes and Kelce probably would do, because of their connection and years of familiarity. I am sure Sark knows, but he is never going to tell us. I would love to hear it though

I get the point Thatguy is trying to make when it comes to the WR creating leverage, but all of that shit is moot when the defender is so far off and the separation is already there.

Quinn has to adjust the throw towards the space between AD and the pylon instead of lobbing it to the back where the side of the “N” is. Look at all that open space in front yet he decides to throw it into an area that is nearly horizontal to where the defender is.

Mitchell is not going to get to the pylon, if Quinn throws it with heat. He was late on the softball. AD turns inside, not outside on his "break". Mitchell seems to be running a sloppy curl/stop route (perhaps an adjustment to the Db)  and Quinn is throwing a fade.

I’m going to my grave thinking Mitchell and Ewers were both shocked by the alignment of the corner and they got caught in the middle of trying to figure out what to do. Ewers, while getting pressured, reverted back to the fade and tried to give AD a chance.

Texas does not run a lot of fades, so that in itself may have been an issue. I am not sure how flexible Sark is on adjustments. Without knowing that this is all mental masturbation.

  6. All I will say about that last play is it looked off. I am not sure if Mitchell was expecting the pass, but his route was pretty strange. The ball didnt match that route. He opens to the inside and the ball is outside. Maybe it was a called fade and Mitchell adjusted on his own.  I am sure Sark, Mitchell, and Ewers know who messed up, but I dont. Either way Mitchell and Ewers were not on the same page.

Arthur getting fired is Good News for Bijan.

Hopefully atlanta hires a better new head coach that knows how to take advantage of BR's talent...

That is great. That is Sark's railroad concept. Bijan scored multiple times on that same play at Texas

I'm happy with Watt's tenure at Texas. He had size and played physical. We're upgrading our secondary talent, but I expect our young guys are going to take some lumps. I do expect us to generate more pressure next year, especially from the edge to protect those guys.

Texas isn’t going to be inexperienced in the secondary next year. A lot depends on Barron’s decision, which is said to be a coin flip. Assuming he isn’t back the secondary will likely be Williams, Taffee, Makuba (NB), Brooks (CB), and Muhammad (CB)..All of them got substantial minutes. If Barron comes back that likely bumps Taffee out of starting safety spot and Mukuba likely slots in there

Harbaugh watched the film from our game and has been stroking his tiny penis to the thought of running the ball down UW’s throats. UM probably pulls away late in the game. Penix will be under the pressure having to keep up in the limited possession they have left in the game, while a well rested pass rush keeps him running.

I don’t think Washington will have the same game plan. They are not going to build a game plan around the defending the pass. They are going to see a completely different game plan. I would assume they are going to sell out on the run and try to make Michigan pass the ball

One could argue it came down to two fumbles on the UW side of the field. Even if we only kick a FG on one of those drives and punt on the other, the game is different.

Yes. Mistakes were prevalent all night. Why I keep saying Texas was out-played. Their stars played great games. Their team made less mistakes. This is just another example of that

So... out-coached AND out-played. Got it.

Here's the bottom line: regardless of UW's putatively huge advantages, it all came down to one series, and one last play. Somehow we came within one play of winning.

Georgia vs FSU showed what out-coached and out-played really looks like. Texas vs Washington, not so much.

Do I feel better about the game because we came pretty fucking close to winning? You're goddamn right I do. Do you feel better about the game because you feel like everything about Washington's coaches and players was better than ours? I don't actually give a fuck, but you're welcome to your opinion.

It came down to 1 series, because DeBoer managed the end of the game poorly. Let’s not pretend Washington didn’t control that game and you didn’t say “Holy Shit, I can’t believe Texas has a shot to win this” like 99% of the people watching that game.

Did Washington’s DL outplay our Ol?

Two sacks given up. 6 plus yards per rush but only 26 of them. Several of you have harped on defenses playing pass D over run D. I think UW certainly did that.

In spite of the grousing of the stat PFF had UW with 14 pressures on about 45 dropbacks. We had 20 on about 40.

I don’t think the UW DL outplayed our OL. But we did not emphasize what was working best.

Washington basically conceded the run, so bravo. Texas could do what Washington allowed them to do. Christian Jones is probably still waking up in the middle of the night in cold sweats seeing Trice across from him. I think PFF’s 20 pressure is just dead wrong, but you can believe it if you want

If we're meaty ochre then UW is only marginally better, perhaps meatier ochre.

More out-coached - or maybe out-scouted - than out-played. The tipped too-low throws over (well, not-quite over)  the lines were not accidental.

Washington coaches did better. Their players did better. Did you have Washington’s DL would out-play Texas on your bingo card? Did you have Texas would have a bunch of pre-snap penalties on the bingo card? Washington won more of the 1 on 1  battles, than Texas. Running to the internet to blame the QB, who put up 370 yards, or Coaches isn’t going fix that, but I guess it makes people feel better

Going in, I thought we'd need to score 40+ to win. The tactical job for PK and his guys was to hold UW under 40, and they did exactly that. The secondary being unable to stop Penix was not much of a surprise to anyone, but was good enough to win... almost.

I said somewhere we lost the turnover battle 0-2, but the Defensive side of Special Teams did get a fumbled punt that we turned into points. So, 1-2 on turnover.

All things considered, you could say it was the Offense that let us down, between the lost fumbles and the red zone woes at the end. Yeah, the end game was an aggy-esque running out of time... but I dunno if having plenty of clock would have won it for us. Being able to run woulda helped, but as Darrell said, "Don't talk to me about shoulda-coulda-woulda... What shoulda happened is what did happen."

Everyone is trying to explain why we lost and picking their favorite person, coach, or unit to blame. It’s pretty simple to me. Washington’s stars played like stars. Best offensive player in the field was Penix. Odunze was probably second. Washington OL was better than the Texas OL. Trice was far and away the best defensive player on the field. Jabbar Muhammad was the best player in the secondary on the field. Texas simply got out-played. It’s sucks to end the season playing mediocre, but it is what it is.

Agree w/ Vogel's tweet here.  Texas' Defense certainly wasn't great, but it wasn't lack of scheme or effort.  Murphy had Penix dead to rights after shaking two blockers on a play and Penix casually sidestepped him and dropped a 20 yard dime.  Penix is just damn good, and has 3 NFL wide receivers.  Babers made an interesting point on the OTF podcast: he thought that UW was going to attack the safeties, which are a coverage weakness, but mostly they didn't - they attacked the corners.  Ryan Watts, even Barron.  They all got cooked at one point in 1-on-1 coverage, and most of Penix's big completions were outside the hashes where a safety isn't going to be a big factor.

UW neutralized our biggest strength in Sweat and Murphy by 1) good protection, 2) running away from them, and 3) Penix being elusive in the pocket and getting the ball out quick.

I think it is a bit of a mixed bag. Some of it was Penix just being on fire and some of it was the Texas defense.

You had some ineffective blitz packages. You had 2 conversions that were simply converted due to alignment/scheme (TE catch on like 3rd an 2, where he basically took 2 steps and turned around with nobody accounting for him and Taaffe being asked to cover an out from a NFL WR from depth)

I wouldn't say it's BS, but it is certainly subjective. Sacks and hits are easy to measure, but "hurries" seems to vary wildly depending on who is doing the measuring. Is it any time the QB has to leave the pocket? Is it only when there's a near miss?

PFF does seem to be an outlier in terms of overcounting pressure. For example:

BS is probably strong, but how about highly subjective

For defense discussion, Klatt talks about success of Michigan and Baltimore Ravens defensive scheme...

    1:45 mark

Big DTs run front, Hard Edges with rush DE's,  hybrid players at Nickel, LB and safeties (like Jelani McDonald)  and solid coverage corners.

MIchigan is going to be a very interesting game to watch.. Probably the best offense vs the best defense. I think Michigan has some of the best coverage and blitz packages in the country. They obviously stole the defense from the Ravens. They do some nice things in masking coverages. I would love PK to do a deep dive on that defense. It fits very well with his philosophy.

In retrospect, I’m not totally surprised by the number of pressures. We had 2/3 real good shots at sacks. He had several very quick reads in which there’s virtually no way to get there. On the season we averaged around 21 per game so our pressure was on par with our average.

Penix was great. Mobile, decisive, accurate.

I am startign to think the pressure stat is BS. I know Texas did get some pressure, but there is no way I believe the 20 pressure number. I thought I watched the game pretty closely and I do not remember Texas pressuring Penix on half his attempts.

hey man, not being an ass. I just disagree. not mad or upset at all with anyone. we didn't score, we have 4 chances from the 12. drive before settled for a FG. sorry that's not good enough in my book. it's fine you and others disagree with me, I'm not part of the great enshitification of the web, disagreement is fine.

that's not what I said.  with 1:15 on the clock, knowing you have to recover an onside kick and where you would have the the ball if you did, there was enough time to make the run game a threat WA had to account for. running the ball vs. it being at least a possibility the defense has to react are not the same thing. one is a huge risk, the other gives more options on the passing game.

as for the last drive, no by the time you got to that point in the game no run option was available from the 12. But the DBs were playing off the receivers, get to the 4-5 yard line on first down (it's why the check down didn't bother me as much as most - though I think a designed play to get to the 4-5 would have been better - or QE panicked and shouldn't have, etc.), then you have a threat of a run play. shit we were averaging 7 yards a carry, from the 4 a run play is absolutely a risk the D has to account for. from the 12, no. call a run play, I probably wouldn't but again, if you get to the 4-5 you can run quick slants, shallow outs, roll out with a QB scramble as an option if things break down, just so much more available. and yes, the jump ball at the end of the game was certainly in the decision set available but probably not as good as a come back to the pylon or something else. so yeah, play calling wasn't great.

D played well enough to win given what Penix and his receivers really are. D outcomes for 11 drives for WA:

    4 TDs

    3 FGs

    4 stops (3 punts / 1 TO on downs)

1 fumble recovery (off a Texas punt).

Of course the D could have done more but that would be in response to the offense doing less. Had the offense done what it's capable of, Texas wins. The loss was on the offense. why?

    slow start (punt, TD, punt)

disappearing act in the third quarter - 1 fumble, 1 punt, 1 fumble to start the fourth quarter

failure to convert last two drives.

The defense was OK.. They gave up 37 pts on 10 possessions. (i am not counting the last Washington drive, that was in grind the clock mode)

Inconsistent offense and the fumbles were far bigger issues, than the last 2 drives. Had the offense been more consistent, Texas wouldnt have been in miracle mode. Hard to get too upset that Texas didnt go 69 yards in 41 seconds and score a TD. I wish it happened, but it was never likely

    Way too many offensive penalties.

This is why the game was so frustrating. I dont think the offense or the defense had a good game. Nothing worse than finishing your season without throwing your best punch.
