Bobby and Gerry have touched on this before.  Typically the recruiting industry will drop Texas commits a bit due to NFL draft history.  Once we start cranking out NFL draftees, these rankings will go up a bit.

its actually pretty mixed. They are ranking the bottom of the class higher, but are hammering the top of the class.

    ON3 has the lowest industry ranking on Baker (25 national vs 44 On3), Wingo (28 v 66), Black (44 v 97), Gibson (83 v 171), and Filsame (33 vs 61)..

    They are have the highest rankings on Mack (108v 58), Cruz (199 v 149), Wilson (239 v 90), Robinson (281 v 166), Washington (384 v 273), and January (488 v 288)..

Correct, until Jan 2.  But the final is Jan 8th.  The portal dates are totally BS.

    https://www.ncaa.org/news/2023/10/4/media-center-di-council-approves-changes-to-notification-of-transfer-windows.aspx

New transfer windows for Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision football will include a 30-day window beginning the Monday after FBS conference championship games. For student-athletes on teams that compete in the postseason (for example: College Football Playoff, FCS championship, bowl games) there will be an additional five-day transfer window following the contest.

That is just not true.. That also ignores that Sark said you could put your name in and stay for the playoffs. I dont hold anything against Maalik. He is doing what he thinks is best for him. It was it is and I would probably do the same, but he had the option to stay with the team. I believe others are taking Sark up on his offer.

I think the transfer portal has a rule that you have to enter before the bowl season starts.

There is now a 5 day window after the playoffs. Sark also said he woudl let people that went into the portal participate in the playoffs, so this was his call not to play

Oh for fuck’s sake. Guy is just doing what is best for him in the long run.

If QE could leave right now to be the number one pick in the draft (he would not be and it’s not even close) he would absolutely leave us. Are you fucking kidding me? QE came into college with a “show me the money” attitude and some of you acting like Maalik is an asshole for moving on. Smdh.

maybe I missed it, but I have not seen a single post hammering Maalik. Vast majority of the post are very positive.

Where do you see that info? Not doubting you. Just everything I’ve heard is the portal closes January 2 and then there’s a 15 day portal in the spring (which is too late for a QB to go)

The portal window leaves him no choice. His choice was basically 1) stay for the playoffs and waste another year on the bench at Texas, or 2) leave his team before the playoffs so he has an opportunity to start and play next year

You can’t fault him for making the decision that is best for him. I fault the NCAA for forcing that choice upon him.

I dont think that is correct. College football playoff participants have an additional 5 day window in January..

Sometimes coaches will take risks in these important Bowl Games they wouldn't normally take since they are not in the context of a long season.

Hence why Mack Brown and Greg Davis thought running Colt McCoy in the 2010 National Title game was a great strategy.

I think your Ewers comp is solid. Penix is athletic enough to hurt you, if you forget about him. He isnt going to hurt you consistently. Maybe get the one change of pace QB draw or a scramble, but it wont be much more than that.

I agree but he's also the first guy off the field in a lot of our subpackages, so it'll be interesting to see.

As an aside, that's something that I really like about this team and the way that Sark/PK run things. There are a lot of guys with specialized roles. It's not just rotations that get non-starters reps. Helm, Agbo, Blackwell, Bush, Collins, and Robinson are all guys that are engaged and play legitimately important roles that wouldn't under coordinators that are married to a particular base package. Not to mention special teamers.

Very interested in what new sub packages PK comes up with. He has a lot of time and they get a month of practice. Could this be a breakout for a guy like Bledsoe, who maybe the best interior rusher for Texas. Does he install  a Dime package? No idea what PK will do, but I am sure there will be some wrinkle we have not seen.

    A couple notes from Suchomel/OB (I'm sorry)

    - As of this morning, Tyanthony Smith is unlikely to visit this weekend. But who really knows.

    - Hunter Andrews told them this morning that he is unlikely to visit this weekend. Had quotes from the coach about being loyal to Utah but also being interested in everything Texas has to offer

    - Kobe Black's recruitment seems to have had a late twist and they now believe A&M will be the pick (jk I made that one up)

probably reading too much into this, but with Andrews not visiting, I will pencil Smith into the class.

If Texas gets pressure on Penix, Texas wins, if they don't, Washington wins.  I agree. set up third down pressure with success on first and second down. take away the run, make it a non factor and then pressure the fuck out of Penix. give up a play, forget and try again. we need 3-4 quality stops and 1 turnover/special teams momentum changer and we win. can it be done? especially the pressure on Penix? strength on strength? we will see. He's gonna have to score 35+ to win.

Here is a quick breakdown using Pts per Drive (unadjusted)

    Michigan: 3.61 pts (5th) ..defense:  0.81 pts (1st)

    Texas: 2.98 pts (14th).. defense  1.45 (13th)

    Washington: 3.45 pts (6th).. defense 2.03 (45th)

    Bama: 2.80 pts (25th)... defense 1.64 (19th)

In my experience in games like this, the first half will likely be a defensive battle. The announcers will say something dumb going into halftime like "We were expecting a shootout, but these defenses had other ideas.." Then, the party starts in the second half once both teams make adjustments and they both still end up over 30 points.

Which probably means the winner of this game, like most big games, will be the team that can run ball.. all the BS in this thread is mostly about the passing games (mine included), but the bowl game was decided by Washington’s ability to run the ball

another possibility - other schools have found success by bringing an extra defender up the middle.  Can we simulate that pressure just by stunting DTs against their undersized center?  just grasping at straws / trying to figure out where there might be an advantage.  But their OL seems to have performed really well all season.

I haven’t watched a ton of Washington, but teams have had success bringing second level blitzes up the middle. That is a lot different than bringing a safety down to help vs the run.

Sark used to mock one of UW’s players who had a stutter in front of the team. The guy was gonna quit when Petersen came in and coach Pete found the guy a tutor. He stayed and flourished.

Great guy that sark. Not in over his head at all🤣

I think you need to figure this out in your head first.. Are you mad that Sark dumped Washignton for USC or do you think Sark is a shitty coach. Both things cant be true

And I can’t think of any other examples of coaches getting outsized credit on the basis of amazing qb play…

Cam Newton, Teddy Bridgewater, Jameis Winston, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow

Maybe Washington’s coach is the real deal, but he’s going to have to prove it when Penix is gone

Keep in mind I think Penix has been in the system for 5-6 years, so he has had a QB at Washington that has run the system longer than 80% of NFL QBs (that estimate is probably low)

trade behind the LOS for more deep balls for WA and less deep balls for more behind the LOS and you have the difference between the two. there's a distribution of pass attempts by teams in the CFP and that's the difference between TX and WA.

Washington throws a lot of quick game and a ton of deep balls. Texas throws a ton of shot passes and more intermediate. Texas has a more developed screen game from my limited viewing.  My point was both are pass first, big play offenses. You start to creep up on the short game and the ball will go over your head. Key is to be able to stop the run with honest boxes. If you cant, it is near impossible to stop either offense (barring a bad day from the QB/penalties). You will have to disguise and mix coverages. Both QBs will kill you, if they can just sit back and hit their 1st option.

I'm not sure where you're getting this from. Texas and UW have very different pass/run distribution.

Plays per game Washington is 37/28 pass/run for 344 and 125 yards per game.

    Texas is 33/38 for 287 and 189.

Fun, tangentially-related fact: Quinn had a higher passer rating than Penix on the season.

Texas passes to open up the run. Sark has been quite open about that. Texas is not a team that just runs people over. Red Zone struggles are good evidence of that. Texas is more committed to finishing games with the run, than Washington.

You quoted as if that were my post, but, just to be clear, it was not. I agree with your take. However, I'll concede to @Codaxx that Michigan may be the most complete team. The only thing I'm really skeptical with Michigan is its offense. It scores points similar to Texas, but it has 1,200 less yards of offense and averages half a yard less per play. I'd like to see yards per possession to see if this is mainly a pace of play difference or something else.

MIchigan has a NFL QB. He was also banged up later in the year.  They may lack at WR, but have excellent TEs. Michigan has not needed to throw the ball. McCarthy is completed 74% of his pass for 9.2 yards per with almost a 5 to 1 TD/int ratio.
