Sorry if wrong forum, it wouldn't let me post in Football. Can one of you more experienced football people help me understand what the Edge position is? When I went to UT - mostly Mackovic years - Priest, Ricky, etc we ran a defense I understood, 4-3-4 Stoney Clark in the middle along with other great players. Edge to me meant a DE usually 250lbs or more. It seems like all the "Edge" people we are recruiting are what I think of as LB 220ish guys. So is an "Edge" position what I would relate to an outside LB? Are true DE types gone in modern defenses? I just look at all these 210-220ish guys that to me (yea, I'm old) scream LB - like Walton, Burke, Finkley, etc but we have LB depth issues? To me it it seems like we have tons of LB bodies but I'm clearly missing something about DE vs. Edge now. Thank you BBA MPA from UT

Sorry, that one annoyed me - it's a damn village at best. So how does Ritz Bitz recruit? Does he take the short bus from his village to a real city then fly to destinations? I don't follow them much. It seems rare that he or his staff visit schools or players? Maybe I'm wrong but I do see highlights of articles about Sark and company attending games, workouts, turning lights on in the gym in the morning for Arch and crew, etc. I've never seen anything (not a big look tbh) about a$m coaches doing these types of evaluations/visits? Do they fly in a gulfstream from random bma to cart him around? I'm sure some of you have more news on JWitt and Worthy. Seems to have shifted to positive today? I want to see Red, Brenan, Cook, Niblett shine but if we have a healthy Neyor and JWitt to press Worthy to reach his full potential, it could be magic.

Population alone does not define a metro area or true city. By all other standards B/CS is damn a village. They have an airport a$m owns - awesome flight schedule: https://www.flyeasterwood.com/departures/ - 3 flights to Dallas per day - village. How do you get to B/CS https://www.rome2rio.com/s/Nearby-Airports/Bryan - take a damn bus from a city. Businesses located there: https://www.zippia.com/company/best-biggest-companies-in-college-station-tx/ - village, not even a city or town. Clearly left out the insurance agencies. A true metro area and city that is consistently rated as a top 10 place to live in the US, has beautiful scenery and attractions. Has real businesses people have heard of... the gem of Texas - Austin, a truly beautiful city in every respect. http://content.abia.org:8080/webfids/ - wow a real airport https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_companies_based_in_Austin,_Texas - shit I know these names! Facts matter - B/CS can keep inbreeding and making more cult fools but in every aspect other than cult members, it is a damn village of morons - not a town or city. Recruiting so on topic - would love to pull Moose or Stewart from the village. Hope we keep all of our coaches - Marion worries me with Tulsa. No inside info, I just read it as reported here or other free sites. Hook'em BBA MPA from a beautiful university in one of the best cities in the USA.

I do not disagree. But I do know the UT lawyers can recommend top guys to our leadership. texam doesn't have that option.
-
Just my thoughts, I have no inside information. texam will have a decent class. They are severely behind on setting up a legal way to NIL players with "the fund" which skims off the top and basically manages anything players can do. Welcome to not having a real law school. The spotlight from Saban and others have made donors shy. The bag dropping stuff scares them. IRS, federal and state laws. Big money isn't stupid. Fisher may appeal to their fan base, but acts like a clown (Herman did similar in his career here - hated that hire). Recruits and media see this. He set FSU back a decade and will do the same at texam over time. Can you imagine if Sark acted like Jimbo, talked like him, etc. (Herman)? I'm very positive on Sark, give him time to develop his kids. You can't find a single thing of him not acting with class and respect at UT (he even dresses cool). Jimbo - quite the opposite - a parrotting fool. Over the next 2 years the transfer portal will be brutal to texam. They have no QB, a good defense and run game but that won't cut it in Jimbo's archaic offense. I'm glad Jimbo has a long contract with them.

Texas v. Alabama (Sept. 10) on Fox. Probably at 11 am
hornlife replied to Jive Turkey's topic in Football
Time of game won't matter. It's hot in Tuscaloosa, I was born there and lived in LA (the shit LA , state LSU). I just hope QE isn't injured in this game. Our OL isn't ready for what Bama will do. Two years, game on. -

You missed 2005 then - I think that was the Shaggy days or some other now defunct site? It was awesome. It's coming, we actually have linemen now. It will take a year though. I don't expect too much this year. Next year, I expect a LOT. -

lol, went there to eat when late. It was under a mile walk. But later in life I did work for Yum Brands which owns Taco Bell! So on point, wise observation. -

49 in Sept. It sucks - went from jogging and a swimmer to tremors and shakes. I'm scared to death of fixing a light bulb on a ladder. I just pray it isn't MS. Neither have a blood test, it takes time. When your legs constantly feel like you hit your funny bone in your elbow, concern. when you have tremors so bad you can't shave it's an issue. Not looking for sympathy, just a Longhorn. I was at that Nebraska game in SA with Mackovic on 4th down with a pass to the TE to seal it. I was at the Michigan Rose Bowl. On my dorm, it was a shithole on Guadalupe street right across from Dobie (sp?) the big blue one. I accepted late it was the only dorm available (off campus, it was too late to get on campus). I originally was going to texam with my high school friend and now my ex-brother in law. We could walk to a great Greek restaurant down some steps and get a gyros, the arcade - Street Fighter tournaments, Gumby's pizza, Double Dave's I think too . I covered my expenses with internships at AA, PW, and Enron. And further down Taco Bell. I just want to see some good football before I go. I will donate and have already left some to UT. I realize this is a fun, thrash people board. Thrash away, it's ok. It won't offend me. I was there, just saying I'm not fcb. Older fan that got to party on 6th street with the James Brown songs. I don't want a pissing match with anyone here. I've followed this for over 30 years on multiple sites. With Parkinson's today is a day I can type. And to Bigbend1812, yes I do either wear my contacts and reading glasses or my normal glasses and remove them to read. To your pictures but I'm a skinny white dude lol. I'm also sure I am a lot smarter than this fcb guy you reference. But to each his own, it is Surly and I've read it for years and sites that pre-dated it for years. Probably sites that predated your birth. Not a weight trainer, how long does it realistically get the beef we got in '22 ready? I see '23 as all redshirts unless injuries. They are super talented but will need time to shape. -

That was my thought also. Do you think there is any reluctance from donors due to last years attention? As an accountant/finance, I'd be nervous from multiple levels. IRS reporting, compliance, state and federal laws. The crypto rumor is garbage, it fluctuates too much to assign a value. I suppose if they keep donations to the bag fund under 10k at a time they could get away with it again but that also relies on recruits/family not depositing less than 10k at a time or stashing the cash. On a positive note, thrilled with our current class. Some of these OL can stack behind last year and develop with a shirt. I'm all in on Sark. Life alumni member that has restarted my contributions. Finally a coach that gets it. I'd take 8 wins this year. Let these kids reshape and develop. For reference, I was OK with the Strong hire. He was brought in to clean house and change the culture, not as a long term solution. He did clean house but failed at everything else. Herman I was against at every level. That hire stopped my contributions. Right or wrong, I felt we could have done better. I've watched Sark talk on Youtube etc. - he has the class of Mackovic, the desire to win like DKR, the knowledge of early Mack on recruiting, and brought in a great staff (unlike Herman). He tells things as they are. No BS from him. He adjusts and has a real plan. -

I'm a 1997 grad from the MPA program. Started with a scholarship in Petroleum Engineering. Lived in the Goodall Whoten (sp?) my first few years at UT. Honest questions from an older fan. I was there for the Mackovic years, that alone should get an honest answer. -

A few questions for the knowledge base: Are teams still subject to the 85 ship players? Can you exceed that roster size with non-ship players? Last year we took ~35 players. Many here are predicting a '23 class near 30 or so. That's 65 new players. Depending on the answer to my first question that means retaining 20 pre '22 players. Obviously some will graduate or go NFL early. But can we really "process" that many out? From previous pages it sounds like "process" means not renewing a ship, correct? Would this impact locker room dynamics? Who is fcb? How long before texam begins the bag drop recruiting? I know they were trying to get "the fund" set up for some legitimacy but I don't think it is done yet (welcome to not having a legit law school). Are their donors timid due to all the attention from last year? I have to imagine the bag drop recruiting starts soon based on their current place. I realize answers to this are opinion based, but many on here are more informed than me. Thank you for any response. Carry on Surly - more boobs are always a positive too. -
Neither did Arch, not a good basis. He may not be, but that has no basis on judging. Sorry if this was sarcasm on Arch not doing some camps.

Add Neto and Williams to that list sir. Agree, we just signed an amazing class with a lot of unexpected but hoped for players. I'm happy with Sark as coach - let him have time to build. As you said, we can bitch and moan but why not trust and support. Let the foundation get built and we just did a ton of foundation work with this class in the trenches. I'm older - use to meet Mackovic weekly as I was going to scuba lessons (MPA and BBA) yea don't hate it was my relax as a former swimmer. He was a wonderful human, he invited me to attend our bowl against NC. I was fortunate to meet Priest Holmes, Ricky, James Brown - others. This has no bearing but let Sark build a foundation and tbh if in year 4 he's pulling a Jimbo 8-4 - we move on.
-
I'd add Neto, Williams to strong possible. Either way, I think a lot of this class contributes very early. Not worried about the first start but the finish and this talent will finish the year for us imo.
-
I'd give up skill for developing trenches right now. We need to restock the trenches and they are doing that. We have QB done - I'd like another X for WR. but I'm willing to wait unless greatness. We also need LB and CB and I'd give up some positions until next year for some we are after. I could see us taking 8-10 OL if everything hit. Too many on this class when rebuilding an OL depth chart you say no too. Most would shirt - we need that depth and rebuild - same on DL. Next year is still a rebuild - 2023 - our guys will be SEC ready and in a hell of a lot better place than most SEC schools. 2023 will be great for Horns.
-
Maalik - apologize on the misspell. In case he reads - huge fan excited to see that rocket on the 40 acres. New - didn't see an edit option also no coffee and work )
-
They've got huge QB issues. That post about all the QB transfers, etc. is very telling. He had one superstar QB - rode it to a NC. Other than that, he isn't what aggie thinks and we should hope they keep extending that delusional contract. Maybe toss in a new NC plaque yearly for good measure. One day they can show recruits a showcase of revisionist history - all the NC they won but ran out of time. When we enter the SEC, they will have a good defense. Offense he's had 4 years and it's worse that a Herman/Strong QB room. Maybe Weigman is the solution to toss the ball to the tight end? No idea but history shows ... this was the 4th year for Sumlin err .. Jimbo - my bad same difference. I do expect us to lose one of ours. Our QB room is rich now. I don't have any insight but my guess would be Card if Casey heals up. Ewers, Casey, Card, Malik, Wright - think I got that correct. Working on Manning for the next. However, Sark has proven - 1 year I'll have you in the first round. And you will have a top OL for protection (Malik - this screams for him - I wouldn't count him out over QE or Arch to start at least one year here and be NFL level). They do have great DL recruits and will have a stellar class. But look deeper, Sark is selling out to the trenches and that wins - we needed that. We are not SEC ready now but in one year we will have a better showing that aggie has in year 4. Take all the big bodies we can - some will play early - most will shirt, develop and be ready. awesome.
-
Huge win. Neto plays OL like a mean ass DL - he wants to crush people. I think he wants to physically hurt them he's so aggressive - HUGE get (mentally and physically beat them down). His build seems great to start early. Not soft, doesn't need to firm up, huge legs, looks like a guard to start and in 1-2 years he's our RT with Banks on LT. I see Williams as an OG. Give Williams a year and no DT gets past that massive human. Maybe an OT though - depends on conditioning. We didn't see that aggressiveness from any OL this year. He's going to bring it.
-
Keep in mind we are rebuilding the trenches on both sides due to absurd mismanagement. We will easily take 7 or more OL if we get quality like Neto etc. Unless we have injuries, I wouldn't expect more than 2 in this class to burn a shirt year so that spaces things out and helps us prepare for the SEC in 2023/24 with quality, developed lineman. That is something we haven't had for 10+ years. Imagine having a rotation with little to no drop off on the OL - that is what this class helps build and plug glaring deficiencies in depth and just not sucking. I don't know enough to judge OL feet but at Williams size, he seems more like a guard to me? Thoughts? As one poster said earlier, I love the Neto get. All of our guys have pancake highlights but this kid - it's like watching MMA what he does to people. He had so many crushing pancake blocks that were over 10 yards downfield - wow, I'm thrilled on this commit. Hell, one play I think he may have nearly killed some kid. The kid didn't move afterwards. Reminded me of Ricky knocking players out with his thighs. Same thoughts on all the stellar DL recruits. Wonderful gets with all our new linemen - this is a program building class.
