Didn't want to create a new thread just for this, so I figured I'd put it here.  It gave me a laugh.  Knowing the type of, uh, unique individual Bader was, the story is probably true.

May be an image of 1 person and text

Bader would deserve his own thread.  He flew and fought with two artificial legs. He was shot down and lost one of them. An arrangement was made for a British plane to drop a new leg one night. After getting them Bader tried to escape and as punishment the Germans took at least one of his legs away every night.

Naw, it’s as legit as any pre-BCS MNC.

This is as good a time as any to mention one of the craziest figures in college football history, the coach of UCLA’s last MNC (and it was legit). His name was Red Sanders. He was a southerner, hired away from Vanderbilt by the Bruins. Almost immediately, he outraged the locals by dropping a “N-bomb” during a booster talk. Even in the 1950’s, that was no bueno in LA.
Sanders won pretty big at UCLA, but died of a heart attack while banging a hooker in a cheap downtown LA hotel.

That deserves a thread of its on :)

SC's '04 AP NC.  LSU wins the BCS title, SC doesn't even play in the title game, but claims the title anyway.

For the 03 season but I agree with 04 in general. SC had multiple ineligible players and knew it. That game should have been Auburn vs OU.

The 83 Miami also stinks. (putting on a helmet here because I know Texas should could have won it) but that Miami team didn't play anyone. Nebraska was highly overated because they beat Penn State badly in the first game. They really didn't play anyone either. I still mad that a one loss Auburn (to Texas) didn't even move up when everyone above them lost in bowls. I also wonder if Texas had won their bowl - would they have won it over Miami. The NBC press department spent an entire month advertising the Orange Bowl as the NC.

But the 84 BYU was just bad. Because of conference tie ins they didn;t even play in a "big" bowl. IIRC they beat Michigan in Holiday Bowl

In the mid 70's, Chevrolet made a V8 Monza that required you to loosen the motor mounts and lift the engine to change the back spark plug. And one of Dodge's big luxury cars required removing the front wheel and all the wheel well covings to get to a front spark plug from underneath the card.

To be fair the Monza was supposed to have GM's Wankel engine which never happened. On the other hand they still shoved the V8 in there

  5. Almost got killed by my MGA in college. Was lying on ground with head under car to look at something and asked DAd to start it. He reached in and hit the starter. MGA's do not have a clutch switch so the car took off. Somehow I got my head out of the way and got smacked with the door as it went by. Somehow it hit the end of the garage and didn't do any damage to car (or me). Big fan of clutch switches ever since

The few times I've hit 60 on a roadbike I was pretty sure my ass was getting ready to become a flux capacitor.

I hit 35+ going downhill on Parmer after 1431. The problem was the wind was helping and I knew coming back up those hills was death. Usually 10-12 mph coming back

So, yesterday I had my first issue with the 1998 911.

I was driving through Ohio, on my way to Notre Dame for a wedding and all of a sudden about half of the emergency lights came on. Alternator Warning, the ABD Green, ABD Red, Anti Lock, etc. I pulled off into a service plaza and called AAA. They sent a flatbed and we loaded it up. The car still ran well, no smoke or anything, and brought it directly to the dealership outside of Pittsburgh.

I was a bit worried but, figured it had to be some electrical gremlin of sorts because everything was still running well.

Just got a call from the dealership and it's pretty good news. The alternator belt snapped and that caused it all to go a bit wacky. I do think it was a good thing not to keep driving, obviously. And I told them since they are in there to just change all of the belts, just to be safe.

I think it could have been much, much worse.

In terms of things going wrong a few hundred mmiles from home - you hit the jackpot

Booked a quick weekend getaway for the family to the JW in San Antonio in two weeks.  Figured I'd try to snag a tee time as a single as early as possible that Saturday.  Oaks was booked until 10:30.  Canyons had a spot at 7:18.  Perfect.  Then, the pro shop informed me that all the bunkers are under repair... and one hole is closed... and the green fee was going to be $275.  I politely declined.  As a capitalist, I love this.  Supply and demand at its finest.  But, damn.  That's robbery for that course.

Played there at corporate event about ten years ago. It's not worth 275 - when course is in perfect shape. Maybe half that.

  11. I know the feeling of covered in gas unfortunately. Luckily during the day but about 30 degrees. Was replacing a fuel filter and didn;t crack the cap so all the pressure exploded gas all over me. Lots of fun in back yard hosing down in 30 degrees

Might be me. Picked up a 77 recently that I'm going to restore. Always wanted one. Came with 2 hoods that aren't usable so I have to get one. Engine was running but is partially disassembled now.

I've owned Fiats in the past (but not a 124) so I'm well aware of what needs to be done to make it reliable (everything).

dad had a 128 sport coupe in 70's (hardtop version of 124). Fun to drive but, as was mentioned, required constant work

  13. After looking again I think it is just the sun bleach of the lower lip that threw me off. Here's my 01 which has the same lip but slightly different color. It was very odd in 2000 when I bought the 2001. There were something like 3 or 4 different bumpers depending on the model of 4Runner. Full paint on limited, full paint on some sport models, or chrome, and options on fender flares. Bought mine specifically with the chrome bumper

While I’d love that 40th anniversary 4Runner, I’ll make do with my old buddy here. It’s now a family heirloom I’m hoping can be my granddaughter’s first ride in nine years.

    99 SR5 Sport 3.4L V6 4WD. Only 169000 miles. Air blows cold. Paint sucks.f7b1fd144df5680a69df669789e38c6e.jpg

Yeah - unfortunate that the green paint turned out to be that way. It was a gorgeous color when new. Front bumper puzzles me. Mine is 2001 but I thouhgt the only choices were painted or chrome. Your looks like it has a lower lip of something else
