Oh dear god... countries aren't households. We need to stop utilizing inapt analogies. Stop thinking of international trade as something akin to a household purchase. It isn't.
By its very nature, trade in a market cannot be imbalanced. Economic activity within a country can and does generate economic value. Countries can then trade with other countries utilizing that value. Some countries may convert that economic value to goods (or services) and utilize that for trade. Other countries may convert that economic value to currency and utilize that for trade.
Think of currency as just another good to barter. The US is (was?) really fucking good at making a product called the "dollar". We have specialized in it. Because it is a highly sought after product, we can use it to barter with other countries. It literally isn't any different than if we were good at producing cars, boats, steel, or microchips.
