You Pepsi drinkers are a bunch of yankee MFers up in here. My unpopular food opinion is that all things cucumber suck. Raw cucumbers. Pickled cucumbers. Pickled cucumber relish. Gross, gross, gross. -

50 minutes ago, dad said:Home depot has a sale on these bad boys so I went ahead and ordered two of them. I will cut them so they clear the garage door. Haven't decided which direction I want to install them in terms of long way fore and aft from the garage door or laterally. I have room in my shed for all of my scrap nowadays, but in our old house I fashioned a garage-ceiling mounted storage compartment like that one. But I used scrap 2x4 and angle brackets for the "legs", so I could make it whatever height I wanted. The garage door just barely cleared, but it made it! -

3 hours ago, thrillhammer said:it means its good. one of the best in the city. there should be a competition for best brisket. i'm not sure franklin would win it. I am. LA BBQ uses a weird rub that simply tastes bad. Last two times I bothered to check it was on both their brisket and their beef rib, which were cooked to perfection, but the flavor is so far off it makes the whole thing pointless. Which is too bad.

On 4/16/2019 at 9:50 AM, wood said:I think they knew, but had already decided they wanted Seb in front. Didn't they say before the season started that Seb was their number one? Then they pulled back from that a bit. LEC is just as quick as Seb, probably quicker. For now, they should just let 'em race, like you say, unless one is obviously quicker than the other. Both Ferraris were losing ground to the Mercs. Chuck wasn't helping his "let us race" case, because he wasn't able to hang with Hamilton and Bottas. And of course Seb is their #1, whether they ever explicitly state it or not. Anyway, just finished the race. At this point, Mercedes is just too good with this engine formula.

My point is that F1's business model is impossible for the local tracks without heavy government subsidy. In Europe, I believe the only one that isn't subsidized is Silverstone, and we hear every year that next year might be their last year (and every year, that's actually true, including this year which might be Silverstone's last). It's shady all the way around, but the bottom line is F1's business model isn't sustainable. More than that, it's not even viable-- at all-- without heavy government subsidies. The governments-- the representatives of the people-- make the decision that they would rather host an event and subsidize it, than lose that event. -

Most of the European races include heavy government subsidies. Sure, they might own the track, or the event, or both, but in most cases they're not coming anywhere close to breaking even so the taxpayers are still footing the bill for the event. If your beef is that in the US, it's resulting in one ownership group benefiting at the expense of the taxpayers, I can see that, but in other countries it's just politicians getting bought off and dirty deals under the table to quasi-sponsors and partners, and the taxpayers are still getting screwed.

4 minutes ago, Anton Chigurh said:Yeah, I mean I’d rather have awesome racing events in my home state than not have them. Seems like not everyone has that sentiment, though. Well definitely, lots of people don't give a flip about awesome racing events and would rather COTA not ever see a dime of gubment money. Personally, I've figured all along that COTA's run was going to be limited and eventually it would implode, so I'm just enjoying it while I can. I don't get into motorcycles so MotoGP isn't my thing, but I really enjoyed the Indycars, and I've enjoyed various sportscar races, and of course I've been a huge F1 fan since the early 80s which is why I was tickled pink when they said were going to get an F1 event right here in our backyard. Especially with Eccelstone in charge, I didn't believe it for a second, not until the gates opened I was inside the venue, but sure enough, here we are. They do lots of things wrong, they half-ass pretty much everything, but I'd still rather have F1 right here in Austin, than not have it. -

I don't know that Cersei is playing smart. Her methods have been effective, but brute forcing it and blowing up all your enemies with wildfire isn't necessarily clever tactics. It's more like she's just realized she has no family left, and doesn't GAF, and is taking huge risks. With her current approach, she's not any more likely to hold the throne than the Mad King was when he started burning up everyone around him. As it turns out, eventually people just get tired of being lit on fire. But believing she's some scheming mastermind doesn't correspond with her history. And so thinking she's got some clever plan with respect to Bronn is inconsistent. But, that's probably exactly why it'll end up being a clever plan. -

1 hour ago, wood said:Tavo had the idea of using the concerts right after the end of the race just as a way of diffusing the traffic, as you say, but when they started with the big acts, it was never about diffusing traffic at all, but rather about increasing race attendance numbers as you say, which is disingenuous. Bobby claims he's just trying to make new fans of racing. If that were true, he wouldn't have a 2+ hour gap between the end of racing and the start of the concerts. Most of the race crowd is long gone before the concerts start. It's really just adding on two extra events to the race weekend and then counting those attendees as race attendees, even though the majority of the concert attendees show up after the racing action is over. They do this in an attempt to help justify the ~$30M in annual subsidies they receive from the State. Around $200M so far iirc. Even if someone only shows up for the concert, which is what most concert-goers do, they're being counted as a race attendee. It's also no coincidence that the cheapest way to get into the concerts is to buy a 3-day wristband, and that those wristbands don't have to be scanned on entry. They don't even have a bar code. COTA has no idea how many wristband wearers are showing up, because they aren't even attempting to count them ... but for every one of those that is sold, they are counting it as three days of race attendance, even if they only show up for one night, or even not at all. Yet they still present precise numbers to the State despite never counting the 3-day wristbands. How is that? They pull a number outta their asses. That's how. They've gotten around $200M from the State so far, and have never had to prove shit. It's all about appearances ... optics. And now they're moving the concerts to boost race attendance on the two least-attended days. Maybe 10,000 people will show up for FP2, and then maybe 10,000 will show up for Imagine Dragons that night, and they'll tell the State there were 80 or 90,000 people there on Friday. Well sure, but they're going to lie about it anyway, as you say they always have. For me personally, I'd just as soon have them on FRI/SAT and not SUN. But I'll be there from THU-MON, camping in Lot N, so my attendance is already taken for granted.

^^^^ Also, just ignore the crackheads and drive around them, when they're trying to direct you somewhere that you know is stupid and wrong. That's no help for the uninitiated, but for oldtimers that know the ways around, it can save you 45 minutes to an hour. It also helps the n00bz by getting you off the road they were forced to take. At least, that's how I justify it anyway.

1 minute ago, CHEF DIESEL said:Dallas proper is overdue for some severe weather. Not talking the suburbs up near Oklahoma but the urban core. Last time we saw big hail was June 2012. I saw the Jarrell tornado in person from I-35 in 1997 and don't wish that on anyone. That was the hand of God unleashing hell. We haven't had serious hail anywhere near me in NW Austin/CP since 2009.

39 minutes ago, Brisketexan said:Our Norwegian friends are heading up to Dallas tonight to watch the Stars playoff game. They intend to drive back after the game (figure the game ends around 10:00). That would put them on I-35 from Dallas to Austin between 10:00 and 1:00 or so. I've advised them to pack a change of clothes, and plan on staying in a hotel on the south side of Dallas, at best. I might drive home in this shit, but they have NO idea what they'd be driving in, and even if he can handle it, I doubt that he can handle being in a minivan with three women about to piss their pants as hail comes down. They should definitely grab a hotel. The last thing they want to do is be in a hailstorm, and...

Eh, the concerts were originally on Sunday afternoon with the idea of spreading out the departing crowds. They added some on Saturday afternoon for the same reason. It wasn't until the Taylor Swift concert that they grabbed a major headliner and put their biggest concert on Saturday instead of Sunday, with the intent to increase attendance numbers. For me, the Sunday evening slot is kind of a let-down time anyway, so I don't really care that it's gone. It's also a weeknight and asking a lot of people out to the track on a weeknight, is asking too much. In other words, Friday/Saturday makes sense to me and is fine. I imagine they'll still have some smaller-stage folks playing Sunday afternoon/evening, for anyone that wants to stick around the track and buy some more $12 beers. JMO of course.

It's well-seasoned, though, and yes, better than Top Notch <lulz>. (It actually is.) I like Randall's. It actually isn't though. Neither is KFC. Lulz.

7 minutes ago, jimmyjazz said:WTF? That was a hilariously bad attempt at chicken-shaming me. I don't even know where to start. Kudos, I guess. (Hint: if I'm posting on the thread I probably like fried chicken.) Then kudos for the hilariously bad response, I guess? As alternatives in Austin you suggested a national chain that sucks, and two places that don't make fried chicken. So... thanks?

Meh. TABC sucks but Texas has so much delicious beer I'm fine with missing out on another overhyped Lagunitas offering. -

6 minutes ago, jimmyjazz said:I haven't had much fried chicken in Austin that's worth the price, beyond chain outfits and grocery stores. Seriously, KFC Original is flavored better than most I've tried. Lucy's sucked -- BAD -- the last 2 times I tried it. Flyrite was OK, but that's just sammiches and tenders. I need to try Gus' because it sounds delicious. If somebody could figure out how to turn Ranch 616's jalapeno maize chicken into a fried chicken dinner I'd gain 50 pounds in 6 months. You and I agree on a lot of things jj, but unfortunately this is pretty much what I expected. Someone on surly/shaggy shoots down something someone else has advocated, yet suggests zero alternatives. I mean, everyone gets his own opinion, but KFC sucks and isn't comparable to Top Notch. Lucy's is terrible, agree with you there. Flyrite isn't fried chicken and neither is Ranch 616 so not sure why you'd bring it up.? You should certainly try Gus's, it's my favorite in Austin at this point. Overall it sounds like you just don't like fried chicken-- which is fine, but then why render an opinion on this thread?

Yup, has cucumber in it, so... also gross.
Just a little Greek yogurt with some oilive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and dill works wonders in its place, tastes so much better without any disgusting cucumber flavor.
