Food, local travel, and music are among the top things to love about Austin.  Seems pretty natural they'd all feature prominently in a thread like this.

On that note, another thing I love about Austin... Bob Schneider at the Saxon Pub:

Geez are you in my head? Though we prefer him at the hill country galleria these days. #40dogs is my signature shout out to my lady. Like good times that haven’t happened yet but will.

Ok I wasn’t going to quote your pics but deep dish savage on whole wheat is one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. Sure a lot of nostalgia but still great.

  3. I’ve said fuck all to Texas wine for years. Like two decades at least. Spicewood Vineyards is pretty damn good. We had the wine country itch Sunday and said fuck it let’s go drink swill. Had a GREAT Cab Franc, a Cali Pinot he made with Cali grapes, and their Viognier which is fucking legit.

first pic is the Pinot, second is the cab franc. viognier is sleeping in the wine storage till it’s hot as balls.

Oh man so many thoughts and memories. Obviously many of us who have posted over the last 25 years on these sites have gone through some shit and that doesn't include the 15 years of walking the desert in football, which ironically we did great in.

Nobody kills themselves because of a message board post. Sure it could be a final straw in a long series of issues in a posters real life.

What would be interesting is if someone ran all of our posting histories through an ai model. Some very prominent posters imo have changed their perception significantly. Again for many reasons but would be super interesting.

Snoop Dogg and I got into it a few times then took it to the side and talked at length in DMs. I don’t even remember what about, I do remember printing out some of them they seemed that meaningful at the time. After a while he and his daughter died in a tragic car accident - head on I believe. Caused by a seizure. Mother Russia - his wife was devastated. Never knew any of them in person, not even sure what they looked like. But it was then that I realized there is no distinction between the internet socials and in real life. Loree was after that I believe though maybe Loree was first I don’t recall now. What I know is both of those posters and their deaths had a profound impact on me. There’s no place for online bullying for those who believe in the importance and power of kindness and connection.  That’s just my bottom line.

  6. I’d still like to know more about the decision making dynamics of the two days of assembly to know who and how many need to be hung by their balls but punishing students is only making it worse. It’s total bullshit.

  8. I'm out. I think there are plenty of reasonable views here, I just want to know what really happened (you know fly on the wall), many of you know what happened. anyway, if Hartzell is the fascist then I want him out as much as I want Abbott gone.  If this is more of the unrelenting meddling of a fascist governor and others, then fuck me running as well.  doesn't matter which it is, our university is in deep shit, and I'll just leave it at that.

I understand exactly what they are saying. I'm saying it doesn't fucking matter. He isn't the fucking janitor. He isn't mid-level management. He is the fucking President of the University. He had other options than trample the safety and rights of students.

It could matter because his replacement might be much worse. imagine if everyone that was squeezed in the trump admin resigned?  as bad as this was, I don't want it to get worse. and oh boy can it.

Right. That didn’t happen. He asked for this AHEAD OF TIME.

I have no idea why you’re willing to die on this hill. Stop bending over backwards to justify obvious fascism.

not even close to what I'm saying. if hartzell is the fascist, hang him by his sagging scrotum. I'm not sure he's the fascist though. I certainly would like to find out more.

I get your point.  But the DEI shit foisted upon Hartzell by the government.  He had no cards to play and was genuinely supportive of the DEI mission.  This was altogether a different animal.  This was 100% architected by Eltife, Longoria, and Abbott. But Jay went along with it.  And we will likely never know why.

i chatted with him last weekend and he seemed not to have a care in the world, high fiving students, etc.  but somebody got to him on Tuesday with something.  Because he is not a rash man.  The faculty is absolutely disgusted with him right now.  He sent up years of goodwill into smoke in a couple hours.

almost everyone at System/Chancellor office is still on comms lockdown and half the regents are still baffled by this even though they are Abbott supporters.  This is all very strange, even for us

I was saying his hands were tied. that's the similarity between DEI and DPS show of force. now if we find out Hartzell was on his own with the DPS then I won't take back what I said about Abbott, but I will take back what I said about Hartzell. He's got to account for this if it was truly him - still acknowledging my first point about how difficult larger gatherings on heated topics can be in this current political and cultural climate.

No doubt it was a tough spot to be in. He failed miserably in his handling of it. He should resign

    1 hour ago, Sawbonz said:

If that is what happened he should have offered his resignation when given the order to call in troops, and if resignation was accepted he should have immediately released a statement announcing riot police have been ordered to campus by [insert whichever assholes gave the order], decrying that decision, and stating he was resigning effective immediately in protest

I'm operating from the premises it can get MUCH worse. so at this moment, I don't agree here.  And no one should take that as defending the decision. when you are on defense, you give up yards, doesn't mean you want to do so. I think we are living in unprecedented times and the take over of UT is underway, my hope is that Hartzell is not on team Abbott and that UT can withstand the onslaught and we can turn the tide in elections soon.  I doubt that happens but it's my only hope.

The legislature is not gonna investigate this except to implement more restrictions on campus demonstrations.  Best you can hope for is some alums and police oversight groups to clamor for some transparency.  That’s all.

the timeline keeps getting conveniently readjusted.  You can call for DPS backup to supplement UTPD efforts and they can arrive within 15 mts.  But that amount of troopers, in that kinda gear, with horses.  On speedway where even with the pylons lowered, you can only get two vehicles in at the same time and it would take dozens of them over the course of an hour to move that much geared ouT personnel, never mind the horse trailers.  That’s a really shut off part of campus now in terms of vehicular access.

DPS did not respond to inquiries about from which substations they were deployed.  And guess what?  The traffic and security cams from the Blanton to Gregory were all conveniently undergoing maintenance at the time.  You know that thing you do when you have tens of millions of dollars in art work that require redundant security cameras.

this is what I'm saying. No fucking way Hartzell asked for help and here comes the goons, in mass numbers, in full riot gear, there in force quickly. BULLSHIT. I think Hartzell's hand was forced. if we start with the premise that Abbott is a thug, what do thugs do? been watching the Godfather with my boys this week - Abbott made Hartzell an offer he couldn't refuse.

Now should Hartzell stand up to Abbott? I don't know, that depends on a lot of other factors the facts of which I simply am not privy to. But I'd sure as shit love to know. The DEI shit and now this shit?  Yeah, I'm very, very concerned which way this goes.

You missed the point of the comparison. It's lack of accountability for the actual job instead of personal enrichment or benefit. He chose to personally benefit instead of doing his fucking job and will be rewarded for it by the board who are deranged Maga bootlicker fucks.

I didn't miss the point, I don't think the comparison is apt, I think there is a lot more going on than Hartzell being a MAGA bootlicker. He very well may be, but to conclude that right now is juvenile. The last thing I want is for this shit to get worse and leadership at UT can get MUCH, MUCH worse under our current and worsening state politics. Will Hartzell take us down that path or is he doing his best to be a bullwark against it, I don't know.

I hear you on jumping to conclusions, but this is not a time for nuance. The governor deployed shock troops onto campus to shut down speech he didn't like. Our university president consented to that abuse of our campus and student body. He put his political future and personal goals ahead of the good of The University of Texas.

I just think that the fascists make the most progress in their goals when reasonable people treat fascists like they're also reasonable. Abbott and anyone who would answer to his orders to march into a peaceful protest and assault them to silence their speech are goddamn fucking fascists.

I 100% agree about Abbott. I don't know enough about Hartzell to say the bold is 100% true. The shocking truth is UT leadership could get MUCH worse post-Hartzell.  I have no idea where Hartzell is at - being subservient to Abbott for personal gain or subservient to try and keep him at bay on at least some of the day-to-day. But the meddling by Abbott and Texas MAGA is intense that I 100% believe. We are in unchartered waters here imo.

Jay Hartzell being in a tough spot is his job. He failed miserably to do a key part of his job. He has failed the students and he has failed the faculty. Anyone defending this is the same as defending reality detached CEOs and their exorbitant pay and destruction of product and innovation for the sake of shareholder value. UT is not a business it's a public institution focused on research and education.

not really. that CEO isn't subject to being crushed by MAGA state leadership.  you can't say he's a public servant then use a private for profit example, they aren't even close to the same thing.

I'm simply stating we do not know what happened that led to this with respect to this singular decision.

As for Hartzell as a president, his leadership is certainly suspect I agree and to that point, I have the same questions. To what extent is UT getting squeezed by state politics in ways that make his decision making authority futile?  To what extent is he being told on certain topics what he has to do or else?  I think UT has much bigger issues to be concerned about than simply a president that may suck. I think the problems are much more dire than that.

I know you do. And, yes, the law can be complex, but this instance is not. The student organization provided the University a heads up of the proposed protest (which strictly speaking isn't necessary under University rules for open areas). The plan was to "occupy" the South Lawn. They passed out fliers telling folks to bring sandwiches and snacks. After occupying the lawn for the day they were going to march to the capitol. The University, and particularly Hartzell, freaked out about what was happening elsewhere (and I point out that a lot of the problems at other campuses were also administration caused) and gave a blanket no. Technically, under Texas law and University regulations, it had no authority to do that. More importantly, a blanket no to speech isn't a "reasonable, place, and manner" restriction since it amounts to an outright prohibition of the freedom to assemble. Hartzell, apparently understanding the student organization was moving forward despite his blanket no, decided the only course was to call in riot police to bust heads before the event even started. There was no violence, except by DPS. There were no threats, except by DPS. There was no destruction, except by DPS. And of the 50+ people arrested that day, including a cameraman for the news exercising a core civic right and service, all were later released and charges dropped. This was a naked trampling of the First Amendment. This was a naked abuse of authority. And Hartzell wasn't a mere observer or participant, but was rather the architect, as confirmed by his own letter and his own texts. Fuck him. Ultimately, he was afraid of a picnic. Maybe he invited the wolves to dinner not appreciating what would happen. But if that is the case, he is too incompetent and stupid to run the University anyway.

I don't agree with his decisions on the face of it. I'm simply saying it was a tough spot under current political dynamics not the least of which is the likely intense pressure from the office of the governor and as someone very interested in the truth, I don't know the whole story regarding how the shitty decision was made.  that's all.

I don't think you're defending them, but I do think you're giving them the benefit of the doubt because you won't look for yourself

you should ask more questions and assume less. I spent more than an hour counseling my best friend's daughter on how to show up on campus and protest yesterday (she's a student at UT). I talked about what happen the day before with her too.

you jump to conclusions too much and it prevents you from seeing the nuance. I do not support Hartzell's decision, I do support the right to assemble, I think Abbott is a power thirsty thug and I think the DPS is mostly full of goons. I also don't know have the full story on what really happened that led to Hartzell's decision and neither do you.

How about: Abbott signed a law in 2019 to specifically make every public university a legal place for peaceful protest and demonstration. He violated that law yesterday because of fear of what happened in California and New York.

Goons did not use bullshit tactics to get assemblers in trouble. The police showed up at 1130, before the protesters did, in full on riot gear. There's fucking video from Fox7 (before their cameraman was RKO'd and arrested by DPS) of students in yellow vests clearing a path through the protest for the police, who then turn around and teakettle and start arresting them.

Please, go look for yourself what happened. Don't take abbott's word for it.

He's counting on you to take his word and not be curious enough to look for yourself.

jesus christ on what planet do you think I'm defending abbott or DPS? get the fuck outta here with that shit. fuck them.

The protesters are a bunch of 18-22 year olds and many of them were not even eligible to vote when Abbott was on the ballott for his third term in 2022. None of them wer eligible to vote for Trump in 2016 or 2020 or Abbott in 2014 or 2018. Putting this on their voting record is a very weak argument.

not commenting on their past (I was commenting on "our" past and "their" present). for 18-22 year olds assembling - if you are of voting age and assembling with respect to a political issue, it's a complete waste of your time if you don't donate, volunteer and vote.

  20. 42 minutes ago, Dahobbs said:

He called in riot police that endangered students. It is bullshit. I'm not giving him a pass for this because it was a "difficult position". You don't get to claim to champion free speech and then stamp it down before anything is said or done. Fucking bullshit.

I hear you, I think you are reasonable, I think your position is reasonable. I just don't know enough. free speech (and more accurately the right to assemble) in and of itself is complex area of the law, so it's not ever really black or white. AND, fuck DPS and the goons that used bullshit tactics to get the assemblers in trouble.
