  1. The last 150 years or so have created a bizarre world of biblical "truth," which has been twisted to require a literalism of allegory that is totally unnecessary and inexplicably dismissive of the origin and context of the stories (and yes, the creation myth is a story) that make up the Jewish holy tradition.

I went to a wedding at St Mary’s in Austin a few weeks ago. The priest said “the Bible isn’t a history book. It’s a philosophy book.” I immediately wondered how many people lost their shit when he said that.

  2. And to those of you saying Austin traffic doesn’t suck, I defy you to drive from Ben White to 183 on I-35 anytime between 7 AM and midnight any day of the week and stay at or above the speed limit the whole way.

Why? If you live in town, there’s no reason to ever get on I35. I have a hard time giving a shit if the drive to the suburbs is shitty. Move to civilization.
  3. I went to Texas Church of Christ churches for my first 30 years and Baptist for my last 11.  And when I was c of c that was 3 times a week — Wednesday night and two times on Sunday.   I’ve never heard anyone preach against evolution.  But apparently some congregations must.  Because every liberal non church goer I know — and me being a lawyer that’s a lot — automatically assumes I am some young earth creationist because I believe in God.

Growing up baptist, my experience was the same. But something changed. For example, I know Hyde Park Baptist preaches against evolution. The CofC my roommate from college goes to in weatherford does also. Hell, he’s an oncologist, a creationist, and a holocaust denier. It’s like a trifecta that’s probably not matched by anyone in the world.

  4. I still don’t understand why William said the same line as Dolores during different timelines
Have you ever seen anything so full of Splendor?
Delores said it when Arnold was still testing Delores and took her to the big city. She was supposed to meet and bang Logan to get his investment but Tallulah Riley took her place.
William said it to Delores years later after he supposedly fell in love with her, then realized that wasn’t real, then moved on etc.
Did William read through her code or something?

    William is a host.
  5. In San Pedro, there's tons of great food...Wild Mango's, Estel's, Caroline's, Neri's Tacos, etc.  My favorite was Robin's Kitchen. Just some dude with some pits grilling up jerk chicken and fish for like $5 a plate.  The Truck Stop is a food trailer and drinking park that has a pool now so I would bet it's a chick magnet.

Snorkeling/diving Hol Chan, Mexican Rocks, and Shark-Ray Alley is a must.

Drinking wise, Belikin is the local beer. There's a local punch every place makes that delicious and strong.

  6. But then, they had a Kindergarten graduation for us when I was a tike.  McDonald's provided a bunch of "robes" which, thinking back, were probably some sort of paper table cloth we cut holes in to make a poncho-esque robe.

Holy shit. You just brought out a repressed memory of me wearing a trash bag PreK graduation robe circa ‘78. Fuck my childhood.

  7. Jon Favreau’s Star Wars TV Series is Set Before The Force Awakens
    By Cooper Hood

Jon Favreau finally reveals the first details regarding his Star Wars TV series, notably when it takes place in the saga’s timeline. Lucasfilm is broadening the franchise’s reach since reviving the saga in 2015 on the big screen. While the films receive most of the attention, there are tons of content coming through comics, novels, and television. Lucasfilm and Disney are bringing another animated series to life this fall in Star Wars Resistance, but they also recently announced that Favreau will be shaping the first live-action Star Wars TV show.

Lucasfilm and Favreau refrained from sharing any information regarding the series when it was first announced, but questions still arose, such as how long the series would last, when it would debut, and what characters will appear were. While there are certainly a lot of questions surrounding the project, possibly the biggest is, when does it takes place in the saga?

Jon Favreau answered that question at the world premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story, telling Nerdist that it not only takes place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens but also that it’s set seven years after the Battle of Endor, in which the Rebellion defeated the Emperor and crushed the Empire once and for all.

The placement of Favreau’s series after the Battle of Endor but still decades before The Force Awakens is a big deal. It is the latest example of Lucasfilm finally opening up that major gap in the timeline for additional stories to be told. Resistance is going to tell stories leading right up to The Force Awakens by the time everything is likely said and done. Whatever Favreau’s show is, it will further bridge that gap between the movies.

Even though Favreau says his series will feature entirely new characters, the placement in the timeline could allow for some creative cameos, just like what the studio did with Star Wars Rebels. There’s no telling how closely tied to the movies the series will be, but this could certainly be a place to briefly explore the life of Boba Fett and/or other original trilogy characters. Boba Fett isn’t a necessary inclusion, but Lucasfilm is definitely keen to the idea of using him again. If Favreau’s series takes a look at the underbelly of the Star Wars universe, as some suspect, there’s certainly a chance for the bounty hunter to make his return.

However, Favreau’s tease of cutting edge technology could be an indication that this series is still a ways off. He’s currently in the writing stage and there’s no word on when production will begin. Plus, he’s already got his hands full with The Lion King and then The Jungle Book 2. Furthermore, the TV series won’t debut until Disney’s streaming service is actually available, which won’t be until next year at the earliest. Regardless, knowing that the untitled Star Wars TV series takes place before The Force Awakens opens up several possibilities.

Excellent.  Do you need to go out on a charter to get decent whale watching?  If so, any advice would be greatly appreciated.  The reason I asked is that when we were on The Big Island, we took a whale watching charter out of Kona which was nice, but I really enjoyed viewing with binoculars from bluffs up the coast because the whales were putting on quite a show.  It was also the time of day because there was too much glare off the water on our charter, and you can guess which side of the boat the whales were on.

The whales weren't far out but you wouldn't see anything from shore. We used https://5starwhales.com/.  If I didn't have small kids in tow, I would've opted for one of the guide services using small inflatable boats where you have to wear a dry suit to keep from dying. It'd be fun as hell.

Food wise: Red Fish Blue Fish was great. Went there 3 times.  Floyd's diner was one of the best breakfast spots anywhere.  Frankie's Modern Diner had just opened and had a great grill lamb au jus sandwich that was just perfect.  10 Acres was great...it seemed fancier than it ended up being. Don Mee had good dim sum.

Beacon Hill Park was great for kids. Good playgrounds, gorgeous gardens, a petting zoo.

We tried to do the Pacific Rim driving trail. 120 miles on paper but we only got about half way. it is very slow going. I don't think we averaged 40MPH due to a really low speed limit, winding roads, and no passing opportunities.  We stopped at China Beach, French Beach, Sooke, and Avatar Grove. That filled an entire day.  While on that drive, we had lunch at  Shirley Delicious which was a total mountain hippie eatery but was good.

Lots of good British pubs in Victoria. I went to two - Bard & Banker and The Sticky Wicket.  Both are recommended.  If you're into weed, there's a dispensary on seemingly every other corner.

  9. Went to Victoria two summers ago. Like previously said, it is the shit.

For breakfast, hit up Floyd’s. The hash plate is like 3 lbs of food. Red Fish Blue Fish down in the harbor has the best fried fish I’ve ever eaten.

The mammoth exhibit at the BC museum is cool. Plenty of good hiking with insane views. With kids, Avatar Grove was awesome. Easy hike/climb around giant trees. It’s a bit of a drive from town. Whale watching is good. We saw both orcas and humpbacks breaching when we did our tour.
