Netflix Documentary: Social Dilemma

Anyone watch this yet? Mrs. CHIEF and I watched some of it last night. It is basically a bunch of former high ranking executives of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Tik Tok, and others) discussing American's obsession with social media and what it is doing to people and especially children and young adults. It talks about the rise in suicide rates of children and adolescents it is causing, and the never ending need for positive admiration on social media. They are all pretty contrite about the monsters they have created, and how it has completely altered our society, psychology, and culture.

The primary driver is how to monetize the apps. The product for sale is your attention, every "click" and "like" is put into an algorithm. The amount of money spent on each individual user is insane. One of the things that jumped out to us was, "There are only two entities that use the term "users" as their client base, social media companies, and drug dealers."

After remaining stable during the early 2000s, the prevalence of mental health issues among U.S. adolescents and young adults began to rise in the early 2010s. These trends included sharp increases in depression, anxiety, loneliness, self‐harm, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide, with increases more pronounced among girls and young women. There is a growing consensus that these trends may be connected to the rise in technology use.

It's definitely just another form of addiction and seems to hit girls the hardest. Maybe because of their biological make up emphasizing social connections more strongly as a way of navigating life as opposed to males that gravitate towards physical strength and pragmatism.
