Look, Mercedes Benz is the only SAE level 3 car and Tesla isn't. You can keep on with the fanboi shit, but they aren't leading and haven't been for years. Everyone has already at least caught up and many mfg are already surpassing.

I’m not a fan boi. Mercedes are great cars. I have a 10 year old Tesla and drove a 2026 for a loaner and was seriously impressed with the FSD that’s all. It is the OEM leader for autonomous driving and if you haven’t driven one for a week I think you should jump at the chance it’s a really cool drive.  Recognizing it’s badassery on a particular feature doesn’t mean I’m a fan boi, it’s objectively fucking awesome. It’s not 80% it’s 100%.  You want to talk safety or interior luxury or best stereo or best engineering or best touring car or tow capacity or reliability or highest resale value you won’t hear me talking about Tesla (though I’m a huge EV fan). But on autonomous driving, in 2025-2026, yeah they’ve got it dialed in.

And just because I don’t want an after market strap on doesn’t mean I’m a fan boi either.

I don’t want to mention our other cars but they run the gamut. I like all five of them and only one is a Tesla. I just bought a ford EV for my teen and love it.  My next car isn’t likely to be a tesla, if it was right now it would be the Cadillac Escalade EV, that thing is so fucking slick. I like the new GX550 but it’s not an EV. Porsches and Mercedes are always at the top. Not a fan boi, simply recognize what’s tight - on a thread about autonomous driving.

Except it's not, the OEM leader. That's the problem. I'm not saying fsd sucks. I'm saying it's not the best or the leader or the most sold or the most used. It's not categorically at the top of anything at the moment, except EV share in the US because of some seriously fucking stupid protrctions against china based EV mfg.

This isn't 2022 it's 2026.

I’m only talking about the autonomous driving feature - only that.

i already stated companies catch up. It’s not the leader of EVs. It’s one of many.

And I've given you evidence repeatedly saying they aren't the leader lol. They are a major player and it's cool. Waymo is operating in multiple cities in multiple states on multiple platform. RoboTaxi has like 9 cars in Austin in like 4 zipcodes. They are completely incomparable. I spent an hour in Waymo's yesterday between zilker, north Austin, back to downtown and then east Austin south of the river.

I'm not a Luddite non believer. Lol

I can’t buy a waymo and have it drive me everywhere. It’s not available to consumers.

I’m talking about consumer available cars. You are wrong about teslas FSD. Mercedes very well may end up the best but when you consider only vehicles available to consumers that can handle the broadest possible situations without driver having to take over right now it’s Tesla. It’s not even fucking debatable. Now just on the highway or in stop and go traffic probably Mercedes given they make some of the safest auto systems ever designed. But soup to nuts sit back and not have to grab the wheel, sorry there’s not a comparison - right now.

have you spent any considerable time in a 2026 FSD Tesla? I have, a week, I was blown away. I have also spent time in the 2022-2024 FSD teslas and was not impressed and wouldn’t spend a penny on it.  Until this loaner car I had zero interest in another tesla, for all the reasons. It’s fucking dialed in.

So now SAE level 3 autonomous cars are "not able to drive in broadest possible situations" like wtf are you even talking about? You are making shit up. I'm sure it's cool. It's just not the only thing out there and its also hard stuck just like every other system even the ones that aren't available which was the point. Its not to detract from tesla its about talking about it plainly from a technology perspective.

The Mercedes will not drive in every situation, you said yourself it was 80% there. Come on man.

In one week, driving all over town, and one decent road trip, I broke FSD less than 6-7 times mostly in parking lots and twice at a four way stop sign, and once at a parking attendant.  that’s it for 7 full days of driving it.  Every other imaginable situation it handled it without any confusion, without any problem.

tell me, what does 80% mean? What does your Benz not do that comprises the 20%?

Go drive a 2026 FSD Tesla and a 2026 Mercedes with Drive Pilot and get back to me. Jesus Fuck.

Mercedes own website

https://www.mbusa.com/en/owners/manuals/drive-pilot

… it’s not full self driving. It’s level 3 for what it does and that is truly impressive but it’s no where near FSD.  And it’s no where near 80% FSD by what they say it can do.

FSD is fucking level 2 Jesus Christ.

I understand. It’s still FSD. Mercedes is significantly limited in what you can do hands free even though it’s level 3.

I’m talking to a fucking wall. Good night.

I need to learn to ignore the "hot" tag on threads. Every time I see it I think, "Oh, something really important is happening." But then it's just two morons arguing about something of no consequence.

So, you're just ignoring all of Surly now?

Back to the original idea - Waymo on highways.  I think they've started on slower speed roads because the consequences of a failure are lower.  Fender benders vs 80 mph collisions.  And they know that they are being held to a higher safety standard than human drivers.  And they also don't want to hurt people.

They are getting more confident that they can handle higher speeds and greater risk and they are expanding to highway driving.  But it's not their main use case right now.

Right now, they are expanding to more cities  ... mostly as an inner city taxi service.  More cities gives them more visibility to more people, and establishes them as *the* leading driverless car solution.  They have a limited number cars and they are trying different business models in different cities, while experimenting with higher speeds on highways.
