The Woodlands breaking Dallas's decade plus state title streak is pretty impressive.

HP won the D2 championship means it'll be back soon though.

Anyone make it out to Dragon Stadium this past weekend for the games?

Just an FYI, Jesuit JV which is mostly Freshman tied HPD D2 8-8 and should have beaten them as Jesuit JV were missing 4 of the top Freshman.  HP DII is Freshman dominated.  HP's Sophomore class (2020) and Junior (2019) classes are very thin.  The Woodlands is deep 2019-2020 as is ESD.  Next couple of years, the best teams are likely to be The Woodlands and ESD with Southlake, Plano West,  being upstarts because of strong 2020 classes.  Jesuit and HP will be right there, but a rung below ESD and The Woodlands.  In 2021 the best teams will likely be HP and Jesuit.

Necro of all necro bumps here..

Surely there are a few lacrosse fans or Dads of lacrosse players on SH.

5 games into the the High School season here in FLA and my 3 daughters are all playing on the same varsity team for the first time this year. Occasionally all 3 Lil Boggetts are on the draw circle at the same time.

Anyone else have kids playing?

anyone?

Bueller?

Ethan Burke was also committed to Maryland lacrosse at one time.  Terps could use them BOTH this season - unranked at 5-3 and play #4 Penn State tomorrow.

Pat Spencer won the Tewaaraton Award (lacrosse's Heisman) in 2019 and holds the NCAA record for career Assists, 4th in career Points.  Grad Transferred from Loyola (Md) to Northwestern to play basketball.  Spent a year in the Bundesliga 2, where I think he helped his team get promoted.  Been with Golden State's G League team in Santa Cruz the last 2 seasons.  Recently got some run with the big club.

Longhorns are 11-0 with LSU on the road and A&M in Austin on Friday, Apr 12 at 7pm.  If you haven't been to a game down at the Caven/Clark Field, you should go.  Aggies aren't good, so it won't be competitive, but it's a great venue for the sport and that rivalry never stopped in lacrosse.

As good a guess at the MCLA Tournament, should chalk hold through conference tournaments:

Oh! I should note I am the proud owner of a 2023 Westwood Lax State Champ shirt.

Congrats! Not something we ever accomplished when I played there in the early 90s despite having one of the better teams in the state.  However, my daughter did find one of my old Westwood lacrosse shirts at my parent's house that she likes to wear around.

Paul Rabil is a recently retired player, and he was the Lebron James of lacrosse - 6'5" 240# and could do it all.  He's also the founder of the PLL and the face of the league office, although his brother is the CEO.

awesome re Texas lax. And props to Mr and Mrs Caven, the UT lax facilities are amazing for a club sport. I know the WW women's lax team had a visit to meet the UT women and tour the facilities a week ago or so. That donor was a forward thinker. kudos

HS state champs: it will coming back to 'Wood in 2028 and 2029, if not sooner. They got a killer crop of dudes coming up from middle school and some very good coaches.

That is awesome Re: UT Mens Lax. I don't follow the MCLA but I will start.

There were a lot of good NCAA mens and women's lacrosse this last weekend. The UVA v Cuse was great as was the Maryland John's Hopkins game.

We are into the state playoffs currently in FLA, regional games this week. Have to travel 2.5 hours south into the depths of Miami tomorrow evening for a 7:00 pm game. if we make it out alive, we will play again next week down there.  accepting all prayers I make it back alive.

UVA-Cuse was a classic - that's the kind of game that creates fans.  Crazy to see Paul Gait in a wheelchair and still looking like the fitter Gait brother.

Cuse-Cornell from a couple of weeks ago was insane.  Can still probably watch the replay on ESPN+.

Made it out Miami alive, but we lost so the HS season ends for us.  Not a bad one overall finished 12-4 and highest state rankings in 20 years.

My oldest (10th grade), despite missing 6 of 16 games, still leads the team in goals, draw controls and incidental fouls. Surgery for the ACL is next month so hopefully she makes it back mid season next year.

Good luck to all that are still playing.

National Championship Tournament will be played in Round Rock, May 6-May 11.
https://mcla.us/tournaments/championships

#2 Texas plays #15 Simon Fraser on Monday at 9:30am.
Simon Fraser Goalie just won Goalie of the Week honors and backs a solid D.

Quote

No. 15 Simon Fraser vs. No. 2 Texas
An unwelcome matchup for the Longhorns. Texas has a phenomenal offense, but they are running up against a Fraser squad that has one of its best defenses in recent memory. Remember, they held BYU to just 11. In the Longhorns favor is the Red Leafs offense is a step slow this year and, as usual, SFU is not deep, so the Round Rock heat could be a factor.

Guys who have played in the MCLA have played in the MLL/PLL.  Most of them transfer to a varsity program first, but there has been at least 1 guy who played nothing but club get some time in the pros - Michigan was still MCLA in 2008.

As for the draft, I've been a Whipsnakes guy since inception because I know the head coach a little bit, but I've added the Cannons to my rooting interests.

Didn't love the Whipsnakes draft, but I trust Stags to know what he's doing - he has a PLL title.
Loved Boston's: Kavanaugh dropping to 6 was gold - kid is a straight up winner who will be playing with his brother again.
Tierney drafting an Ivy attackman 1st round was perfectly on brand.
Pressler was terrible in the draft last year and Atlas sucked because of it.  Best draft of this year, imo.  Shellenberger is a better overall attackman than O'Neill and Entenmann can be a top flight PLL goalie. Got high quality players at all 4 positions.

My son played for Texas LAX for all 4 years.  On darn near all of his teams, he had D1 transfers.  Basically, these were guys who were really freaking good and asked themselves, “Why am I living in a 20k person town that has 18 hours of dark and rain in the winter?  And for LAX?”  And the women at UT.

He asserts that Hartzell would have taken most of his teams really far.

I would argue that the problem at Texas has never been talent, it's always been coaching.  Ever since Bob Korba, it's been pretty meh.  Hartzell commands respect.

Yup.  Garrigan was a really good coach, but I am sure you know the rest.  Loda was OK, but a in an little over his head.  Bok was a pendulum swing. Bringing “adults” back into the fold.  Kudos to the players/leadership for this direction.

Ha! I actually had my worst parent interaction out there, but it was an opposing father.  JV games is pretty much only family, so it's easy to hear if you're the single/far side ref closest to the fans.  He was convinced we were calling clearing time limits incorrectly, and I could tell he was googling it, because he was quoting NFHS rules, when TXHSLL plays NCAA rules.  After the game, he waited for me, tried to say he was a ref (clearly not), got a little puffed up.  Nothing burger, but only time I ever had a parent confront me after a game.

I was normally a loud-mouth during the game.  And would have a quick moment of self-reflection and say, "WTF, boilerhorn, these guys know more than you do and are closer to the action..."  I was always willing to volunteer as timer, spotter, etc., as it got me even closer to the game - and helped with my inability to shut up :)

My 2 boys (10 years apaprt) did not play for LT, but did play against them.  Do not want to self-dox - yet :)

Eh, the privates have always been powers.  For the most part (Jesuit excluded), it's their #1 sport for male students, and they are legit varsity programs vs club for the publics.  Kinkaid was terrible for years - I honestly hadn't seen their name in 20+ years until they won last year....although I see they were in the F4 in 2022 as well.  Seems they really benefitted from the playoff restructuring a couple of years back. ESD is a power and always has been.  TMI Episcopal is the real outlier - that's a relatively new program that has gone from cellar to tower pretty quickly.  They were terrible when I was reffing in the 20teens.  I'll say this: the publics have come a LONG way.  In the early 2000's, the privates DOMINATED.  There were years when the publics were lucky to get a team into the F4.

ESD was the only private in the F4 of AA and there were only 3 in the E8.
A had 3 privates in the E8, 2 in the F4
TMI was the only private in the E8 in B

2023:
AA: 3 privates in the E8, 1 in the F4, 0 in the CG - public champ
A: 3 privates in the E8, 2 in the F4, 2 in the CG - private champ
B: 1 privates in the E8, 1 in the F4, 1 in the CG - public champ

2022:
AA: 3 privates in the E8, 3 in the F4, 2 in the CG - private champ
A: 4 privates in the E8, 2 in the F4, 0 in the CG - public champ
B: 0 privates in the E8, 0 in the F4, 0 in the CG - public champ

Those massive suburbs have done a good job so far in promoting the sport. On the other hand, Houston Lamar used to be a regular in the F4. Now they can't even compete in the C division.

Lamar fell off the face of the earth.  They used to be so good.  Usually when a program drops like that, it's because the head coach left (see: Earl Bill leaving St. Mary's Hall and them going from multiple title winners to the gutter), but just googling a bit shows Vollmer was still there up until 2019 at least.  Their neighbor St. John's was an even bigger mystery, dropping from the elite to very meh, when they had the full varsity set up.

Yeah, the privates just come in and throw scholarships at kids.  ESD has taken Prosper and Frisco's best incoming freshman for next year.  We lost our goalie to Jesuit and Greenhill (?!?) just swiped our best 7th grader starting next year.  I can't say I blame them as my kids go to private, just one without a team so we play with the publics.
