I'm with a group of couples that have rented a large beachfront house in Playa Langosta in February.  Anybody have any knowledge of that area?  Have not seen it mentioned on this thread.  Thanks.

Pretty sure that’s really just the southern part of Tamarindo. Lots of tourists. Good food and drink spots. It’s very dry in that area and hot, not as much wildlife as the central and southern parts of the country. Some really nice beaches within a 30 minute drive that are considered the best beaches in all of CR. The main Tamarindo beach is just ok, I didn’t venture all the way down to what they call the Langosta beach so not sure how it is.

Thanks for the input. I guess I’m wondering if CR is still a worthwhile destination if we’re not going there for the sake of fishing, ziplining, or other adventure activities? Is is a good place to simply relax?

I’m reluctant to stay at the properties you mentioned because we have an aversion to large resorts and an anaphylactic reaction to all-inclusive. We’d much prefer a smaller boutique hotel that has nice rooms and grounds, and it appears there are some of those in that area.

I'm always relaxed in CR. There a tons of small boutique properties all over MA.  Something like this might be up your alley

Maybe I misread what you are looking for, but also it sounds like you don’t want to do the drive to Manuel Antonio (there’s also a 15 minute flight on Sansa that works if you can coordinate arrival time with their schedule). But yes, CR is a great place to relax like midtown said. Tamarindo is much busier and touristy than Manuel Antonio but probably has more options for you with easier beach access. CR has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but those aren’t really close to most of the resort and resort towns. the Tamarindo public beach is just ok, but Playa Conchal and a few others nearby are great.

Wife and I are wanting to take our 18-month old somewhere in late July or late August and are considering CR. We've never been before. We already have adult luxury vacations to Ibiza/Mallorca and St. Barth this year, so this would hopefully just be an easy family getaway. We've also considered places like San Diego or Riviera Maya, but we thought CR might give us a chance to dip our toes into a new country for us.

I realize lots of people go there to fish or do adventure excursions, but we aren't looking for that. We want a good hotel, preferrably with a good pool and close to a decent beach. That gives the kid some stuff to do and we can mostly relax. It seems somewhere near Tamarindo would fit the bill. Someone I follow on IG just did a similar trip to Cala Luna Hotel which looks nice.

I've read the rave reviews about Tulemar on here but it's a longer drive and it looks a little bit dated or possibly timeshare-ish in the photos. Maybe the internet doesn't do it justice, but I think the 3 hour drive from SJO would not be ideal. At that distance, we would probably lean towards Nayara Springs, or just pick a different destination altogether.

Any suggestions or reasons why this trip might be a bad idea for our situation? Is the rainy season going to be too much of a factor? Thanks.

The bolded part is exactly why people go to CR and love it, so I think you’ve already answered your own question.

Obviously I love CR and Tulemar but there are a bunch of other options in the Manuel Antonio area for resorts. Most aren’t going to fit what it sounds like you are looking for though. Same really goes for Tamarindo. It sounds like if you want to stick with CR you’d be happier at one of the high end resorts north of there - the W, Westin, Four Seasons, etc.

They are available and AA flies direct from PHX, Dallas and LAX. Itchy trigger finger… rooster fish, dorado, sail, marlin, all on the fly rod.

My breathing currently resembles a roll in the hay. I think I gotta do this.

I’ll put you on a marlin on fly and you will probably piss your pants. At Hobby now, hopefully Port A by midnight. Long day we caught the puddle jumper out of Quepos at 9:30 this morning. I’ll be in touch this week.

Does anyone actually live in Port Aransas, or is it all short term rentals?

Sometimes seems like nobody actually lives there. Population is around 3800 I think. The short term rental thing has gotten out of control though.

We did tip her well, she was done with the crowd by the time her shift ended though lol.  Is there low income housing in Port A?  Where do all those old meth head locals live??  @justhookit There were more than a few at Shorty’s yesterday.

Haha I probably know most of them. Virginia is good people though.

Most of the locals live in RV parks, but Port A did build the new apartments called Paladium for some low income housing. The current housing situation in Port A is  bad and unsustainable. It’s really, really, really hard to hire decent help in the service industry.

Hope you tipped Virginia well. I’m still not used to the new location.

I’m still in Costa Rica but will be back in Port A in a week.2 months at “home” and then straight back to CR for most of the summer.

We are binging the kids and my in-laws down the last week of May. Staying at a house in Tulemar. I booked the Caribsea and Sportsman for a full day trip.
I’m in desperate need of a vacation so it can’t get here soon enough.
How is the real estate market these days? Every time we go I get closer and closer to pulling the trigger on buying a place down there.

I think it’s a fairly good time to buy. The market definitely seems softer than it was the first 2 years after Covid. I’m currently in the process of buying something.
They are struggling a little bit with the cartel violence but so far it really isn’t spilling into the general public or tourists. But I’m definitely a little more cautious about where and what time of day I go somewhere than I was even just last year.

Justhookit - where in CR are you fishing out of? Bucket list for me. Grew up fishing offshore out of Texas (Freeport then SPI)…your slow days rival a damn good day in the GoM. Enjoy your offshore pics and vids!

Yeah we ended up 4/5 on sailfish the other day and 0/2 on blues and I would have been thrilled with that back when I had my boat in Port A. But for here it was by far our worst day of the season. Most days we are getting about 30ish billfish bites, a few days in the high teens and a few days with 45+. Tournament coming up on Saturday and hopefully the fishing picks up again.

I fish out of Marina Pez Vela in Quepos. Los Suenos about an hour north of here is good too.

  10. Welp slow start. Raised one sailfish and one blue marlin. Caught the sail but jumped the blue off.

edit- and 5 minutes after the post we just raised another blue. Blind bite on the flat rod ballyhoo but didn’t hook up. Good sign though, that’s 2 in less than 2 hours and we’ve only seen 6 all year. As good as the marlin bite was last sailfish season, this year has been really slow for blues but great for sailfish. Definitely the best sailfish season since ‘21.

  11. I mean we don’t even have to look away from our former teams  to see that yes, players can improve their shot drastically while in college or after when they hit the NBA. I have no idea if Mitchell will do it, but to write off a player with his athleticism is a weird take. I definitely would like to see him back next year. Hunter too for what it’s worth.

People have a REALLY strong attachment to Spaghetti Warehouse.  I probably walked through those doors like 3x and I don't think I ever ate there, but so many people mention it first when talking about that warehouse district area.  Not Mezzaluna or Sullivan's or Bitter End or Cedar Street or a dozen other memorable spots within 100 yards.  Was it actually decent food, or just the only "fancy" Italian place around in the 90's?

I think of Spaghetti Warehouse as more of an 80’s thing and like you I’m not sure I ever even ate there. Mezzaluna (which I loved) opened in what ‘89 or so? There was also a good older Italian place near the Back 40 bar. City Grill was another good downtown restaurant. Man looking back it’s amazing how limited the options were.

Has any cattle rancher ever shot his cow or bull because he feared for his life? I can't imagine some rancher shooting the shit at his bfe local coffee joint with his buddies telling the horrific story of having to shoot his bull because he was in fear for his life.

Family friend was killed by one of his bulls he was trying to move into a new pasture. Not sure if a gun would have helped him or not.

Glad to see the random shootings have found their way to Port A.  Geez.😞

Don’t think that shooting was so random. Spring Break attracts a really bad crowd these days, especially down around the mile markets where it happened.

As to math, many possible engineered solutions will replicate the Schrodinger equation. Since I'm not a mathematician, I didn't bother doing the math. The geometry is clearly sufficient.

That’s exactly what I kept telling my math professors. They didn’t listen to me either.

So many people in CR now are bitching about how expensive CR has gotten. Those prices on that menu look pretty similar to what I am seeing here. Overall did you find it a lot cheaper than CR or pretty similar?
