It isn't like he asked for help the day of because it was getting out of control. He asked for helps days before the event even took place. He asked for the DPS to come and shut it down BEFORE the event took place. He deserves no quarter here.

You keep saying this but are not digesting what multiple posters keep trying to tell you. Yes he did it in advance. Because the people he works for made it very clear they did not want another Columbia.

this is what I'm saying. No fucking way Hartzell asked for help and here comes the goons, in mass numbers, in full riot gear, there in force quickly. BULLSHIT. I think Hartzell's hand was forced. if we start with the premise that Abbott is a thug, what do thugs do? been watching the Godfather with my boys this week - Abbott made Hartzell an offer he couldn't refuse.

Now should Hartzell stand up to Abbott? I don't know, that depends on a lot of other factors the facts of which I simply am not privy to. But I'd sure as shit love to know. The DEI shit and now this shit?  Yeah, I'm very, very concerned which way this goes.

Yes. Everyone can blame Hartzell and maybe he was complicit but in my opinion the focus should be on the politicians and administrators driving this from shadowy backrooms. And 90% of the posters on here demanding that he should have done something in the face of this pressure are the same 90% that never say a word to their bosses when being abused in the workplace.

He called in riot police that endangered students. It is bullshit. I'm not giving him a pass for this because it was a "difficult position". You don't get to claim to champion free speech and then stamp it down before anything is said or done. Fucking bullshit.

Anyone who navigates the extreme political nature of getting to president of a public university understands that they have to do things like provide cover for their “bosses” by “asking” for help rather than having it dictated to them. That definitely could be the case here too. These people at the top do this bs all the time. It’s not right but it’s reality. We have no idea whether it was really his idea or not.

  5. Ok, I can understand all of the emotional responses above. A blatant attack on free speech is an extremely serious issue.

However, it is important to look at the situation from his perspective too. I’m not excusing his behavior because it seems at this point based upon the evidence that he screwed up. But, we’ve seen across the country protests that escalated and got out of control and included hate speech and other actions that violated university policies.  We’ve also seen university presidents get fired for not having the proper balance between protecting Jewish students and supporting free speech.

Maybe, just maybe, he legitimately was concerned about student safety and his own job and simply made a poor decision. Or, maybe his actions did head off escalations that were planned but didn’t happen. None of us know the future.

And the story above about Maga was lame; there was no point. I despise the maga crowd but unfortunately there is a significant number of them in positions of authority all over this country, especially in Texas. They make up a very significant minority of this country. We should all assume they are all over our university administrations.

If you really want to make a difference, try to get as many younger people as possible to vote to get these maga people out of elected positions. Everyone avoids the discussion of politics with friends and family, but I don’t when it comes to the topic of maga. Everyone that knows me knows where I stand wrt maga. Sending Ted Cruz packing would be a nice start.

  6. Just out of curiosity, were any of you there yesterday? Is Surly right? Cause I know that’s the popular version of what went on there. A lot of people like to believe that. I wish I could. But I was there. I wasn’t here on Surly hoping I was right, thinking about it. I was up to my knees in Bermuda grass, with bullhorns that didn’t work, going in there, looking for Elon, slugging it out with him, while pussies like you were back here partying, putting on headbands, doing drugs, and listening to the goddam 4th and 5 albums. Oh! Oh! Oh!

    Find the violation.

    A) The freedoms of speech, expression, and assembly are fundamental rights of all persons and are central to the mission of the University. In accordance with this Chapter, students, faculty members, staff members, and Members of the Public have the right to assemble, to speak, and to attempt to attract the attention of others, and corresponding rights to hear the speech of others when they choose to listen, and to ignore the speech of others when they choose not to listen.

Confirms the right we all know the students had.

    B) In furtherance of the University’s educational mission, the University buildings including their outside surfaces, surfaces associated with or connected to a University building, and University structures are limited public forums open only to the expressive activities of faculty, staff, and students as set forth in this Chapter. Members of the Public may engage in expressive activities at the University in accordance with the rules contained in this Chapter, including generally applicable or localized "time, place, and manner" rules as described in Subsection 13-304. Student, faculty, and staff organizations may not invite the public at large to events in University buildings or facilities, or locations that are not in a common outdoor area.

The students weren't in the buildings. And, students would be allowed to express themselves there anyway.

    C) Students, faculty, and staff members are free to express their views, individually or in organized groups, orally or in writing or by other symbols, on any topic, in all parts of the campus, subject only to rules necessary to preserve the equal rights of others and the other functions of the University. Teaching, research, and other official functions of the University will have priority in allocating the use of space on campus. Members of the Public may engage in expressive activities only in common outdoor areas of the campus, and subject to the time, place, and manner rules necessary to preserve the functions of the University, as set forth in subsection 13-304.

Ok, sounds good so far. I'm not seeing anything violated by the students yet.

    D) The University will not discriminate on the basis of the political, religious, philosophical, ideological, or academic viewpoint expressed by any person, either in the enforcement and administration of these rules or otherwise. This subsection does not limit the University's ability to enforce provisions involving prohibited categories of expression described in Subchapter 13-200.

There may be a violation here, but not by the students.

    E) The University of Texas at Austin Police Department (UTPD) may immediately enforce these rules if a violation of these rules constitutes a breach of the peace or compromises public safety.

Or may enforce non-existent rules apparently.

I've looked at the rest of rules. They generally suggest that time and place restrictions exist, but don't provide any specific details. There is some specific regulations on amplified speech and exhibits that don't seem relevant here. Oh, there is this:

Sec. 13–901. General Rule on Public Assemblies

“Publicly assemble” and “public assembly” include any gathering of persons, including discussions, rallies, and demonstrations. The rules in Subchapter 13–800 apply to any use of amplified sound at a public assembly.

Persons and organizations may publicly assemble on campus in any place where, at the time of the assembly, the persons assembling are permitted to be. This right to assemble is subject to the rules in this Chapter and to the rules on use of University property in Chapter 10 of the Institutional Rules. No advance permission is required in the common outdoor areas.

Oh... wait... may assemble on campus in any place where the person is permitted to be. Hmm, I don't recall their being a prohibition on students being on the South Mall. So, I guess, you tell me @Frank Drebin, where are students not allowed to be?

Can you post 13-304? In the news the University said it rejected the protest request because it violated the rules, I assume as per described in this subsection.

  9. I hope Sark’s sit downs with players aren’t too specific and definitive. Shit happens all the time and telling a third string or second string guy he’s going be that isn’t an ideal approach. I assume most of these portal guys just see the writing on the wall and aren’t being over influenced by bad news in a sit down. There’s honesty and integrity, but then there’s also too much information. I hope it’s not the latter.

Stay away from the US postal service for any payments by check.  I handle business affairs for my church and we ended up moving our mail delivery from our physical address to a P.O. Box due to all of the mail theft and check-washing that we experienced.

Who delivers to and from the P.O. Box? Santa Claus?

Gerry with a Brandon Garrison update

BTW, looks like Brandon Garrison will visit Arkansas this weekend - as of today. That's not the most comforting news for Texas, OU or OkState. We shall see what happens.

In the early days of NIL discussions, Arkansas was tagged as a school that could conceivably graduate from the outhouse to the penthouse, due to the number of big dollar folks in that area: the Walton family tentacles, the Tyson chicken tentacles, the logistics company guy, Jerry Jones, etc. And because they are all a bunch of hillbillies, splashing around cash in college football for bragging rights fits the narrative.

  12. In my opinion the defensive backfield has underperformed for years now. Years ago you could argue it was due in part to weak DL’s and LB’s but not lately.

There has been more than enough good talent to come thru the door to see better play and development than we’ve seen. Joseph has been good enough to be able to get Muhammad and Black in the door, but he’s not showing he’s good enough to coach good players to success. You can see it with poor technique over and over. When the portal closes it would be the perfect time to bring in Joseph’s replacement.

  13. I'm trying to understand Elk's strategy. He seems to be trying to change the culture of the program by either pushing out certain players or having them decide on their own they don't want to be there.  But the guys they are replacing them with are very pedestrian. I think that strategy might backfire.  Normally, a coach either: a) brings in quality talent right away that he can get from the portal, or b) does the best they can to recruit quality high school talent and bleed out the bad talent over a one to two year period.

Either of these types of approaches ensure the coach can still win 6-9 games in the first year. With the current Elk approach, it could mean 6 or less wins, AND also the need to upgrade the roster over 1-2 years.  But the problem with that is once you've only won <6 games, things can spiral quickly. No top talent is going to join a <6 win team.  MAybe he thinks we can win with just pedestrian talent. He did it at Duke, but that was in a very different league.

Worst mistake an opponent may make against Texas is to injure the QB.

I can see it now. SEC lineman blasting into the backfield then gently laying Ewers on the ground, brushing away pebbles and trash first, maybe placing a quilt.
