I think most people you call “left” on this board would agree with you. In fact, I would say the majority of the “liberals” on this board gripe often about Democrats being pussies that never get shit accomplished. Here is the cognitive dissonance. The issues of cities like Portland, or San Francisco, and now Austin are fuckall when compared to attempts to overthrow democracy, restricting voting rights, banning books, outlawing education about slavery, controlling transmissible diseases, etc. There’s a reason this country has shit education, healthcare, and income equality. It’s not because Republicans tried fixing it over and over again. But yes, in some cities, homeless people and drug addicts are too coddled, same with some protestors, and some taxes are too damn high.28 points

I think you post in good faith. I think you are in denial about where the mainstream right currently is. I’m not sure when you joined this community, but I’ve been posting in one form or another on longhorn message boards since mid 90s. The vast majority of the posters on this board that you are calling leftists are actually center/right pre-trump. We realized there is no room for us either as Republicans or independents who vote Republican more often than not in the present GOP. In the last 8 to 10 years what you think you identify with has gone off the rails. What you think you are identifying with as someone who is for limited government and low spending is long gone and is not coming back to the GOP. You are going to be either pushed towards where we are or you’re going to be sucked into the far right insanity. This isn’t what we want. The purity tests have already started. If Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney (and now Mitch McConnell!) are vilified as the left, the party is dead.17 points

If the Republican Party acted in accordance to past Republicans, they would still be wrong, but they would be not be reviled. Right now, your party has a win at all costs and we will try to rat fuck the country if we don’t get our way mentality. Sure that isn’t everyone, there are Liz Cheney and Mitt out there, but there rest have joined the brown shirts. Your party should be having a crisis of conscious as morons and traitors are being normalized within it, but instead, your party and their propaganda network brought one of your slimier actors to heel on Tv for calling terrorists, well terrorists. Your party tried to blame it on antifa, and everyone else. Now they are pretending it wasn’t an attempted coup, but rather just a discussion point. So yeah, your party is the problem. You are the problem for supporting it. This is not how representative democracies are supposed to work. But hey, suppressing the will of the people via gerrymandering and poll taxes/voter suppression has normalized this tactic. This was just the next logical step.17 points

This makes absolutely no sense. Show me one piece of proposed legislation to limit anyone’s ability to vote based on any of those criteria The mainstream of your party wants people to have to stand for in long lines with no access to water or restrooms in order to exercise their constitutional right to vote. They want partisan elected officials to be able to override those votes if they don’t agree with the outcome. And they want women (even 11 year olds raped by a family member) to have to carry a fetus to term if there is cardiac electrical activity visible on US. That is mainstream GOP. These are laws in place or soon to be in place. This is what you stand for16 points

Lol you sound like my father in law that says "my daddy was a democrat, back when they were good!" without realizing he's saying his dad was a Dixiecrat that didn't agree with the civil rights act. You wouldn't happen to fall into the same category would you? Look fatty, I'm not a democrat. I hate their politics, their weakness, and inability to actually do anything they say they want to. Their leadership is bought and paid for by corporate interests. But they're still light-years better than the republican party. The democrats arent actively aiming to roll back civil and voting rights. They aren't looking to institutionalize gay people as second class citizens, or selectively edit history.13 points

You have no touch with reality, do you? I want you to cite one time -- ONE SINGLE TIME -- in US history where the immediate past president offered gushing praise of an adversary who was presently offering a dangerous challenge to the United States and global stability, coupled with a direct attack on the sitting US president. Go ahead. Look. Dig. We'll wait.12 points
-
You realize that you're admitting that your position is indefensible here, right? When all you feel you need to do to justify your position is simply cite your biased read of public sentiment on a message board five years ago, you have absolutely nothing. Zilch. Your position doesn't stand on its own, it depends on a subjective characterization of the opinions of others. I can't even imagine what it'd be like to be so intellectually unfit that I thought I could trot out my subjective interpretation of message board sentiment as a defense for my own point of view.12 points

This. Fatty, I truly don't think you are a bad guy. I don't. I think that you are willfully -- and understandably -- blind to the choice before you. Because it's not a pleasant choice. The modern GQP has made it a binary choice: either stand for violent insurrection, insane lies, and an unwavering cult of personality with a 100% loyalty test....or oppose it. EVERYONE other than the GQP is in the "oppose it" side. You can't both stand with the GQP AND oppose those things. They have told you over and over that such a stance is unacceptable, you are a RINO, and if you were an official, you would literally be censured by the party for it. You don't have to like everything the opposition stands for. For now, you just have to like one thing: fighting for the Republic and the Rule of law instead of supporting an overthrown of the government at the hands of an insane cult.12 points

If I were Putin, I'd be a little worried that Trump thinks my invasion plan is "genius."11 points

Are you fucking serious? You read those remarks from the immediate past POTUS.....and your fucking answer is "but Trudeau!"???? Jesus fucking tapdancing Christ. Just admit that Trump is fucking insane. No president in US history has EVER done anything like that. EVER. It's fucking insane.11 points

Made a quick trip to the ranch Saturday afternoon after my son's baseball games in Kerrville. We have just a bit of corn left in the feeders. Maybe a week's worth at this point, so they're still spinning. I bought two new boxes of 270 ammo last weekend, but left them at home. Didn't bring my AR either. So, I ended up using the old Marlin 30-30 with a 4x Tasco scope that I leave at the ranch. Climbed in the stand at 5:45, and at 5:57 a sow and three piglets crossed the sendero. I could see them in the brush behind the feeder looking up at it and waiting patiently for it to go off. They were under the feeder before it stopped spinning. I shot this little 30-lb sow through the left eye when she had her head down facing me. I forgot that I was shooting that 30-30 and not the 223. Oops. Serious gut shot on the exit wound. 30 min later, it was butterflied and on the grill. I just drag the big boars that we shoot off into the brush, but damn that little sow sure was tasty.11 points

My buddy was 35 and had intestine surgery in Oct. There were complications and a stint in the ICU and he was in the hospital past Christmas. He was single and his mom was checking on him today. They had a good conversation while she rubbed his back. She stepped out of the room to call her sister and when she came back 15min later he was gone. Just peacefully. Craig was a character but if I had to tell something about him to describe him I’d say he was born and raised in Boston and was a Southie growing up. He liked to let loose and enjoyed the drink but had the character to stand up for the little guy/gal. Hes that guy who watched over the passed out chick on the couch all night because there were some sketchy people sleeping in the house too. he’s the guy who was nice, polite and loved people but knew all the hustles/cons/grifts and had no problem calling your shit out a mile away. He wasn’t scared of anything and could take a punch. so long partner. I’ll see you when I see you10 points

I don’t have to. January 6th is the only fucking thing I need to point to. One side went completely off the rails, encouraged by TFG and a significant number of Congress Critters. Go fuck yourself.10 points

When you understand that people like Creasy have a fantasy view of a world run by autocrats who just order shit and it magically happens, they have some vague notion that Biden could snap his fingers and not just have Germany bend to his will, but to do so in a way that defies the laws of time and physics to make LNG terminals magically appear overnight. Seriously, this is the magical thinking that we have seen on grand display as a product of the Trump era. They really do think this is how the world works. Again, they think that Biden killing the Keystone pipeline....which wasn't even going to be up and running, and if/when it was, makes up a miniscule percentage of the global petroleum market, and WASN'T EVEN AN NG LINE (it was going to move tar sands oil).....is somehow connected to Germany bending itself over a barrel with regard to Russian natural gas. We're not dealing with people for whom facts or logic are valued commodities.10 points

negged for a false question premise. Biden hasn't opposed domestic O&G production, and (much to my chagrin) is outpacing trump on drilling permits on public lands. And he's released from the strategic reserve. Care to share your source that is the basis of your claim of "Biden doesn't want domestic production?"9 points

In my town the polls were consolidated and the locations closed were in the poorer precincts. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy because it leads to low voter turnout in those precincts which then leads to more locations near those areas closed.9 points

I was overseas (in Russia actually) at school when we invaded Iraq. We had what can only be called a struggle session as our small group participated in a “debate” that turned into eloquent verbal beat downs about how stupid America was and how bad it would all turn out. I was ambivalent going in to the debate but the experience made me want to light the fuse on a tomahawk to Baghdad just out of spite. Of course, those Russian students were very right about U.S. behavior in 2003 and its consequences and it remains for me a good lesson in humility and also how our lizard brains can take over no matter how smart we are.9 points

A lot of innocent people in harm’s way. War is failure. And brings heavy burden for the vulnerable. Putin and the CCP have the absurd notion that we - as western democracies - would dissolve in civil wars internally right about now. The CCP and Russia believe they can break us internally. The new Allied Powers are setting up shop. Undefeated. What is happening to the people in harm’s way is grotesque. The world is watching. God, please bless and protect everyone in harm’s way.9 points

You got me. Am I beyond pissed that one of those sides continues to push a shameless lie about the election being stolen in order to destabilize and undermine democracy and the peaceful transfer of power, actually launched a violent insurrection intended to prevent the peaceful transfer of power and decapitate my government, and now is more interested in attacking our leadership than uniting against a common enemy? You got me. I hate that shit. I hate wife beaters too, and I guess that makes me divisive. Shame on me. Or….fuck off with that shit. The comparison is nowhere fucking close.9 points

Another Surly leftist checking in. Just as a reminder, my HS civics teacher used to call me Alex P. Keaton. I was the founding member and president of my law school's Federalist Society. But I'm a libtard now.8 points

Jesus Christ. You are comparing an internet squabble to real life assholes who have actual power. Dumb. But expected.8 points

Actually, we're watching, in real-time, an entire political party drum out anything that is NOT the extreme "the big lie and a violent insurrection was totally cool" element. See libtards like....George Will...being drummed out of the conservative movement. Shit, see even a POS like Ted Cruz accidentally speak the truth and call Jan 6 an insurrection, and then have to spend the next month groveling for breaking with the insane fundamentalist orthodoxy. There is no room in the modern conservative movement for rational thought. How do we know? They have fucking told us so, repeatedly. Jesus fuck, how you can "both sides" that shit is amazing. But I guess I shouldn't be amazed anymore.8 points

It certainly exists in both sides, however the facts are that it's a selling point for republicans right now. You're conflating the mere existence with the magnitude of it in actuality. But then again you aren't here to post in good faith so this is all just masturbatory shitposting8 points

NS2 is done. Gazprom finished the pipeline and it was waiting on a bunch of legal, technical, and regulatory hurdles to begin flowing. And absolutely-- it was clear that NS2 would give Russia unneeded leverage over Germany (as well as the loss of leverage that Ukraine and some eastern EU states currently have). No one was expecting the certification to go through during the crisis-- but what is so important here are two things. First, Scholz made clear that Germany was taking a proactive step and not just a delaying tactic. His government will withdraw a key document, without which the pipeline cannot go forward. As he explains-- "it sounds technical but this is a legal and administrative step that is necessary." It is a significant shift from "we won't say it out loud, but our bureaucrats are taking their time looking at these papers" to "we're withdrawing our permission slip for this." Second-- Scholz and Merkel before him had steadfastly refused to link NS2 to Ukraine or Russian bad behavior. The refrain "this is a commercial project and is unrelated to security or politics" became the most hated phrase in any meeting with the Germans. Now that Scholz has dropped that line and has admitted the obvious, it will be very difficult to walk it back. Perhaps more importantly-- if they hypothetically tried to proceed with certification or activation absent a shift in Russian behavior, that line is gone in any talks with the U.S. about standing down on our own sanctions against the German firms that are involved in the project. It's an extremely big deal.8 points

Seems like the Ds fell in lockstep with W after 9/11, for awhile. And, on this board, Trump not fucking up condensing the timeline for cv-19 vaccines, and cleaning the path for concurrent testing, was recognized, and credit given. Stimulus checks also come to mind. Use your power of “both sides,” please, and reassure me Rs have a semblance of sanity, by citing similar examples. Damn, using the fifty year benchmark, Al Gore conceding, for the good of the country, is a stand out moment that also draws your two page point into question.8 points

Bullshit. Find me a post that says that. Find me pages of discussion and threads on that topic, if it's as pervasive as you say it was. Back up your claims with evidence. This is an example of bad faith posting. I don't doubt there were comments made to the effect of what you're claiming without evidence, but again, you are conflating mere existence with the volume and focus of the posts. The problem with single issue voters is that you're shifting your analysis from a logical and policy based argument to a dogmatic argument. There is no reasoning with you, because you were not reasoned into that position.7 points

cross posting this from the russia thread. here is an overview of LNG regasification plants in "europe" for everyone to keep in mind as they discuss the topic of russian energy infrastructure holdup leverage over europe. 1 in belgium (zeebrugge which has lots of additional transportation services); 4 in france (montoir, fos tonkin, fos cavaou, and dunkirk all with lots of transportation services); 1 in greece (revithoussa); 3 in italy (with limited transport); 1 in lithuania (klaipeda with limited transport); 1 in malta; 1 in the netherlands (gate with lots of transportation services); 1 in poland (swinoujscie with limited transport); 1 in portugal (sines with limited transport); 7 in spain with varying transport capabilities; and 4 in turkey; 3 in the uk.7 points

Easy. They're gullible, stupid, evil, or some combination of the three. And that goes for absolutely everyone still in the GOP at this point. They're all completely full of shit. The only question is whether or not they have the brain power to know it.7 points

They could have chosen not to close down their nuclear generators. Absolutely mind-numbingly stupid. The truth is that the Germans backed themselves into this Russian-reliant energy corner, and now they will pay for it one way or another.7 points
