My dear friend checked in to say she and her family are Ok for now..with her 18 month old bedding down in the Kyiv metro. The baby is smiling. We met 20 years ago in what was then free Crimea. Fuck Putin to hell for this.40 points

Back in the mid-90s, I was day drinking in Chicago in the Uke Village. There was a small dive bar that just had a sign out front in Ukranian that was phonetically converted to English and I couldn't even pretend to pronounce it. The crowd was a combination of Ukrainian/Polish immigrants and 1970's looking dudes with mullets. It was mid afternoon but the place was packed and the juke was blaring what I only assumed was Ukrainian pop music. The bartender was this big, mean, nasty Ukrainian woman named Agnes. I've been in a million scary dive bars, but I can't ever remember fearing the bartender more than any of the patrons or the surrounding neighborhood. She was terrifying. She took resting bitch face to a new level -- she wore a permanent scowl and spoke broken English. She informed us before we even sat down at the bar that there would be no mixers allowed. And by no mixers, that also included ice. You drank vodka. Straight. And we did. And she did. After 2-3 hours we could barely walk out of there and she probably downed twice as many shots as we had. She acted like it was water, "Shut up pussy, drink!," over and over and over, in the thickest, Eastern European accent you can imagine. Anyway.... all I can think of during this whole mess is that you've got to be the dumbest motherfucker in the world to invade a country full of Agneses.36 points

No CR— I hope people from anywhere will quit burping up bullshit about how Putin made Russia strong, how he defends Christianity and values, how he’s an example of a good nationalist who loves his country. Free Ukrainians are fighting like lions and proving that all his swagger rests on drunken, half-educated boys from the village. If it weren’t a fight across weight classifications this would be Ukraine KO in the first round. He’s shooting rockets at schools and orphanages and sending Chechen national guardsmen to murder Orthodox Christians. He is what a pussy imagines a badass to be.34 points

Today I’m completely grossed out by the entirety of the Western response. Seriously weak sauce all around. Who gives a fuck if Russia purges Ukraine as long as we can keep F250s in cheap gas.29 points

Long time lurker of the site (even back to previous iterations), especially the lulz stuff, gotta say I'm a fan of the collective warped sense of humor here. Just wanted to point out something ironic to me and hopefully all of you. Putin has long wanted to bring back the good old Soviet days to his country. If SWIFT gets pulled, he will have accomplished it, there will be bread lines in Moscow with a month. Good job dick bag. Fuck Putin26 points

And, to do his part, last night, the boy and some buddies got drunk, wandered down to the Russian embassy in Berlin, and yelled "FUCK RUSSIA" at it a few times around 3:00 a.m. True heroes, each and every one of them.25 points

The Ukranians are a very tough people, and their Polish/Romanian/etc neighbors are doing wonderful things, literally waiting at the border to pick up refugees who aren't even there yet. And how about this thread. Lotsa love for everyone affected, cut there's more to it than that. There's another reason for all the vehemence. The reason? Everyone in the free World REALLY hates Russia. The eastern Europeans who have been crapped on by Russia for 400 years, the >40 year old Americans who remember the fear we had for the USSR. To a large degree, this is catharsis for all of that...and that's awesome. Also, let's give the US and western Europe some credit. This is by far the most we've ever done to protect eastern Europe. Should we have been better prepared? Probably. Do we need to do more? Definitely. But we aren't letting an Iron Curtain descend. At least not let. Some other good things: 1) Our intelligence community is playing lights out. Getting, then broadcasting, Russian intentions in nearly real time. There's no question in my mind that we've forced them to change time tables. 2) Protests in Russia again today. Everyone arrested is likely headed to the Gulag or a bullet, and they don't mind. Who would have predicted that 2 weeks ago? 3) Eastern European countries are literally delivering weapons to the Ukraine. As I said above, they're placing themselves in Putin's crosshairs, and they don't mind. Just like the protestors, they don't mind. In the US, our children are gonna sleep in warm beds tonight. Polish parents are gonna put their kids to bed and wonder if they are the next country Putin invades. 4) The World community is coalescing, for the most part. Yeah there's fighting over carve-outs. We haven't siezed all the Oligarchs' yachts and sugarbabies. And Germany is making themselves pariahs. But still, there's so much unity. And even China might join in. Again, 2 weeks ago did you ever think Xi would ghost Putin. It's gonna get worse before it gets better. But let's all take a breath and appreciate what we're doing RIGHT.22 points

More for a history/economics thread, but over the last 75 years or so, a lot of the alliances that the US has joined/created/built-up were done to either prevent the conditions that led to the previous two world wars or other regional conflicts, or in a lot of cases to expand America's economic reach around the globe. We have the US Navy fighting pirates off the coast of Africa not because we have an affinity for those African nations, but because those pirates were going after ships that had ties to American companies (or were even owned by said companies, even if flagged in other countries). We have American soldiers all over Africa not because we love those countries or hate whatever form of ISIS is kicking around, but because American businesses rely on the raw materials, etc. coming out of those countries, and we can't afford to have ISIS 4.0 sweeping up a bunch of those countries into some kind of caliphate that is shut off to us, or we don't want to have to find ourselves taking on ISIS 4.0's caliphate or whatever when they threaten our actual allies. That's a big part of why we keep getting involved in places that on the surface make no sense. We liked to pretend we do this stuff because we're the good guys, and at times we do, but ultimately you have to be cynical and follow the money.20 points

He also ended the Open Skies treaty, abandoned military bases in Syria to Russia, and among other things we'll probably never know about, didn't enforce sanctions signed into law against Russia. This idea that Trump was tougher on Russia and was a deterrent against Russian aggression is a joke. Trump was doing all he could to undermine NATO. He was every authoritarian in this world's best friend and useful idiot while he couldn't even get along with our own allied leaders. He traded legitimacy to the North Korean government for empty promises that were broken within a year. Nobody saw him as a tough leader except weak minded people.20 points

You know that movie Don't Look Up? The plot should have been more like: Scientists discover meteor going to destroy Earth. This discovery occurs during Dotard administration. Scientists are mocked, scorned, called "liberal elites". Trumpers believe the meteor is a liberal hoax (You wouldn't believe how fake the meteor is.) Election, Biden wins, tries to get a bill passed that would fund a heroic effort to save Earth. Susan Collins is very concerned, but worries about how it will be paid for. Tucker is on Team Meteor. ("That meteor didn't send our jobs to china"). Trumpkins would rather die in galactic fire than live under a D president. Meteor destroys Earth. Johnny Sack is among the few survivors. He blames Biden for the Earth being destroyed, claims if Dotard were still president, meteor would never have dared hit Earth.19 points

I already do. The issue is that you don't actually care about this very important issue. You just want to play message board hero, and that's exactly why you don't engage in productive discussions about the misinforming of the American public. Instead you just use it as a grenade to throw into the middle of separate topics. Like this theatrical display, for example. It has been 15 months since you posted on the Yemen thread. Predictably it has died, mostly because the people who participate in this forum that actually choose to stay informed don't rely on this forum to stay informed. Instead of helping people who would otherwise be unaware of the situation stay up to speed by updating that thread, you instead say nothing for 15 months so you can threadshit on other topics.18 points

With the West doing so little to actually help Ukraine, particularly when it comes to energy/gas, why doesn't Ukraine just destroy some of the pipelines in the West and make the decision for them?18 points

You’re wrong. And it’s pretty transparent when anyone starts an assertion by saying something like, “As much as I despise Trump...” and then goes on to defend Trump. Just own it, Trumpkin. Trump was already doing Putin’s bidding, trying to break up NATO and destabilize western democracy. He unilaterally canceled military support for Ukraine (“cancel culture!”) as part of the official Republican Party platform and only begrudgingly granted them aid, after trying to extort the Ukrainian President for purely political favors by withholding it, because it was authorized by a veto-proof majority in Congress. Trump, knowingly or unknowingly, was already an asset of Russian intelligence. He was the best thing that ever happened to Putin’s goal or rebuilding the Soviet Union. The argument that “Putin wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine if Trump was President” is so painfully stupid. First, that’s impossible to know. But we know for sure that Trump worships Putin so he wouldn’t have opposed it if he were still President. We see him cheering Putin from the sidelines while the invasion is going on. And Trump would build a tower in Moscow tomorrow if Putin would give him permission. As if he, or any of his supporters, give a shit about Ukraine, democracy, human rights, or... Fuck, I got this far then remembered who I’m talking to. I’m done wasting my time. Anyone else feel free to pick it up from there.18 points

It has been stated and requested a few times already many pages ago. There have been flashes on here today. If someone feels the urge to post CR miedra, do us all a favor and don’t. No one here wants to see it. Take a few seconds and kindly make those statements in the appropriate area. This thread has been moving along for quite some time, without that unnecessary and unproductive input. TLDR: Anyone that posts CR miedra needs to kick rocks and GTFO of this thread.16 points
