  4. Decorah, about 20 minutes away from me. It's in the Driftless Area (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driftless_Area) and home to Luther College, so it gets the college town vibe. It feels a lot like a mountain town (despite only having hills), and people from the Twin Cities, Chicago, and Des Moines visit pretty frequently due to the world class beer scene (it's where Toppling Goliath is from and there are other local breweries that rock), and the outdoor recreation which is pretty good by Midwestern standards. There's a beautiful paved bike trail the loops around the city, 20+ miles of mountain bike/hiking trails in the bluffs on the north end of town, and plenty of other hiking and biking options within a 40 minute radius. The Upper Iowa River flows through town, and upstream about 15 minutes is some of the top kayaking/canoeing in the Midwest. The college brings in a pretty eclectic mix of people, and there are some really good restaurants, art galleries, etc for a town it's size.

  7. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Not so fast, my friend. Would Gore have Ignored the PDB warning that bin Laden was determined to strike in the U.S.? Nope. Would he have invaded Iraq? Nope. If Gore had heeded the warning like Bush should’ve done and spoken to the FBI and CIA to see what they knew, he might’ve been able to put 2 and 2 together and stop the hijackers from boarding those planes. If he’d prevented 9/11, we’d never know what a huge achievement that was. We only know because Dubya shirked his responsibility and allowed the greatest attack in our country since Pearl Harbor. Maybe Gore wouldn’t have succeeded in preventing the attacks. But he would’ve tried. And if they had occurred (something the Republicans probably would’ve tried to impeach him for), he would’ve invaded Afghanistan. That had to be done. I’ll wager that Gore would’ve heeded the request from his special forces command for more forces at Tora Bora to finish off bin Laden, al-Zawahiri, and the rest of Al Qaeda rather than letting them escape into Pakistan. He also would’ve focused on the job in Afghanistan and not been distracted by a war of choice in Iraq, where Bush was always going to invade regardless of the convenient excuse offered by 9/11. Gore wouldn’t have authorized torture and become Al Qaeda’s best recruiter like Bush did. Would Gore have passed the Patriot Act? Would he have created the mammoth bureaucracy of the DHS? I don’t know. But Bush did those things so the worst Gore could have done would’ve been to be just as bad as Bush. He couldn’t possibly have done worse. If 9/11 had happened on his watch, I’ll also bet Gore wouldn’t have let all the Saudi royals flee the country without so much as an interview, while every other flight was grounded, like Bush did. There’s no way in hell that Gore would’ve been half the disaster that George W. Bush was.

  8. This was from an article in The Athletic discussing possible head coaching candidates at Northwestern. One candidate they mentioned is one Mike Elko. They decided to skip one of his jobs so they could make the point that he had worked at prestigious academic schools. Guess which school they skipped...

  20. Just one data point. I was born in Texas, raised in Texas, graduated from Texas. I have the Texas flag tattooed over my heart. Went in the Navy at 22 and spent most of the next 27 years living in CA, HI, and VA. Until 2015, I always felt that I would move back to Texas. When my wife and I decided to move closer to our folks (hers in SW OK and mine in Houston) a couple of years ago, she asked me if I wanted to move to Texas. I said "fuck no." Mostly because Texas just keeps breaking my heart. I live in Tulsa, OK and it's not much better politically and culturally, but at least I don't have constant daily reminders of how my home ain't what it used to be.

  21. My dog got up to piss at 1AM, so I sat on their my front step waiting for him to do his business, and scrolled through Facebook. What a mistake. After that I spent the next hour laying in bed thinking of clever retorts to all the people crying about Jason Aldean. Of course I opted against it because I've tried to limit my social media engagement. I spend enough time arguing with people here, I don't need to do it on multiple fronts and have it eat up my whole day just to be snarky for my own self satisfaction. But my god, for as much Republicans bitch and moan about people being easily offended, they are really fucking easily offended.

  23. I would walk into that Pringles HQ like Matthew Broderick in Glory storming into the supply officer's building looking for shoes for his men, except instead of him knocking all the canteens off the shelf, it'd be me slapping Pringles tubes everywhere. Then I'd take the cane they thought I was using to walk with, and turn it into an Alabama Whoopin Stick. Whale on em make it sound like a fat moth hittin a fan. Then I'd piss on em. Maybe the desk too. Fuckin Pringles. Zip fly.

  25. 31% of eligible votes, 35% of Americans 18 and older. That's it. Whenever even we, his most ardent dissenters, spew "Half the Country", that falsely bloats his support base and lets his MAGA nation thump their bloated chests with pride. 65 out of every 100 adult Americans don't like him enough to vote for him. And I'd say about 50% of us in total, want him dead. Now.

  26. Huh. Maybe I've just had the misfortune of knowing a lot of awful human beings. And I have. And I'm guessing you'd be surprised by how many of them never really had to face any significant consequences. They were born assholes, lived as assholes, and died as assholes, and life never dealt them any unusually bad consequences. They still had their money, social standing, etc. I've just seen too many people get through this life being shitty with minimal consequences to count on karma settling the score. Kind of like I've also known some really good and decent people who just can't seem to catch a break. Plenty of good people get shit on by the universe, as right next to them, a shitty person skates on by.
