  2. Great story about Matt Nader saving a person's life at a Westlake game on Dec 9.   Lengthy,  but a good read.

    (excerpts)

'That's exactly what happened to me'

Nader and a few of his buddies left the Westlake-Galena Park North Shore state semifinal game a few minutes early; the outcome had already been determined and they wanted to beat the traffic coming out of the Pfield. Meanwhile, Wolters and Shirley Aldana, his partner for the past 13 years, had the same idea.

But minutes later, Wolters was on the ground as Nader ran to him. Nader ripped off Wolters' shirt and got to work.

"I felt for a wrist pulse and couldn't feel anything. So I felt for a neck pulse and didn't feel anything," Nader said. "He was in labored breath, or agonal respiration, which is a body's last-ditch effort to gasp for air. That's exactly what happened to me" in 2006.

"This guy is not breathing," Nader recalled. "I'm doing chest compressions. I can tell that it's working. I'm doing chest compressions for about 10 minutes. Someone comes over to spell me for a little bit, and then I get back in there and continue to do it."

Nader remembers that two people — he does not know their names — arrived with an AED, but it failed twice. Luckily, the Pflugerville Fire Department arrived at the stadium, and three men — firefighter/paramedic Jared Muncher, firefighter/EMT Nathan Mitchell and supervisor Bobby Ortiz — relieved Nader and continued to work on Wolters.

After what felt like 10 more minutes, Nader heard Muncher's emphatic words: "We've got a pulse! We've got a pulse!"

Nader said he hopes Wolters' story will inspire more people to learn CPR because one never knows when such an emergency will happen. Most people freeze. He calls that the "bystander effect."

Nader, 34, is best remembered as the Westlake player whose heart stopped during a 2006 football game at hot and humid Tigerland Stadium in College Station. He was lucky that night. Some Westlake parents, including his own, happened to be doctors and rushed to the field during the game against A&M Consolidated. They performed CPR on the field to help him start breathing again, and Paul Tucker — a cardiologist and the father of current Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, who was Nader's teammate — used an automated external defibrillator, or AED, to shock Nader's heart back into rhythm.

  4. Player quotes from Statesman.    Note Sheffield's complimentary comments and Elliott's toward Wisconsin.

Sophomore libero Emma Halter led the way

Halter finished with 19 digs, two off her season best. And it wasn’t just the number of digs, it was who she was stopping, the types of shots she was stopping and then what Texas did in a number of instances after her stops.

Numerous spike attempts by 6-foot-9 Anna Smrek, 6-foot-4 Sarah Franklin — Wisconsin's second- and first-team All-Americans, respectively — that would normally hit the floor, didn’t get there. And in several instances Halter’s plays extended rallies that ended with Texas scoring.

Asked if she was “in the zone,” Halter replied: “Oh, I would definitely say it was one of those moments for me and for this team. We train so hard for these moments and this is the time to trust your training. ... And yes, I do think I was in the zone today.”

She credited advance work by associate head coach Erik Sullivan for giving her an edge in knowing where Wisconsin players were likely to send the ball in certain situations.

Madisen Skinner's night at the service line, not the net

Skinner, the Big 12 player of the year, is best known for her often spectacular hitting kills. And she certainly had some of those among her match-high 18 kills. But her serving was the engine for an 11-0 run in the third set that made the score 15-3 and for a 6-0 spurt in the fourth set that made it 11-4. In the latter, Skinner had three aces in a five-serve span.

For the match she was credited with six aces. That was double her previous career best. Last year, she had 10 for the entire season. She entered Thursday night’s match with 25.

“We had scouted them pretty well and we kind of knew kind of their weaknesses and individual players we wanted to serve,” Skinner said. “And then just changing up (how deep into Wisconsin’s side of the court to put the ball) and working on my pace of the ball … That was that.”

Said Wisconsin coach Kelly Sheffield: “With some players, when they start getting two and three serves, their serves get better. … And once (Skinner) starts getting her mojo and confidence back there and a little bit of rhythm, it just makes it tough for everybody.”

Texas took advantage of several Wisconsin errors

The Badgers didn’t come into this match with a 30-3 record by accident. But they didn’t play like a 30-3 team. They made hitting errors. They made serving errors. They made errors receiving serves. They even erred in deciding when to challenge officiating calls, using their allotment of two losing video reviews in a little more than two sets.

Errors gave Texas five of their first 14 points in the first set. It the third set, it was five of Texas’ first 10 points and seven of their first 18.

“We didn't play our best volleyball — that's not a secret,” Sheffield said. “But I would say most of it had to do with how (the Longhorns) were playing. I thought we were prepared to play. You know, it was — it was their night.”

    Elliot's comments from KXAN.

“First of all, congratulations to Wisconsin,” Longhorns head coach Jerritt Elliott said. “They are a tremendous team and have so much size and present so many problems to what you do offensively. It was a battle out there. I’m just so proud of the way that our team has been sticking together and finding ways to pull this out and executing at a really high level right now.”

“You can see the confidence that they have with one another and the way they’re playing for each other,” Elliott said. “It’s been such a fun transformation to see from where we started to where we are right now.”

Cali seems to have a lot of talent, and I love Pierce going out west to grab em. We're gonna need our NIL to do wonders if we're going to compete in the SEC, which I think we'll do well in.

Pierce is in charge,  but kudos to Rodriguez for his connections.  (12 years at Pepperdine)

  7. Below is the Perfect Game rankings referred to in the above post.     Click on link for entire list.    Note this does not include portal.

With the addition of Yeskie as pitching coach,  LSU has a very strong coaching/recruiting staff.   Combine with Marucci and NIL money... but you have to play the game on the diamond.

Yep,  they have until 1 Aug '24.    Not a good rule since teams need to fill out roster with portal, etc.

National Signing Day is November 8, 2023 for all D1 and D2 sports outside of football or basketball, and the signing period continues through August 1, 2024.

I am not in the education field,  but did he contact the Texas Classroom Teachers Assoc  as the first step ?

Is he a new hire under a probation period ?    I believe @Knoxtnhorn is in the education field.   Though I think he is in the Metroplex,  perhaps he can offer advice.

Scipio Tex with good comments at end regarding the defensive keys to game (21:30 mark)

    • Handle run with 4 man front
    • Get the coverages cleaned up on passing off WRs for crossers and mesh routes. (Blames this on coaching) Players don't know who they are covering.
    • Stop blitzing Jahdae Barron and dropping Anthony Hill into coverage.  Not a good use of personnel.

At 12:46 Scipio alludes that TCU had our offensive signals last year.    Mentions coaches, players thought the same.

  12. https://www.mlb.com/news/d-backs-bullpen-surge-helps-key-world-series-appearance

Nice article on the formation of the Dbacks bullpen.   GM or whoever needs a payraise.    And Lovullo and Brent Strom (75 years old) for their management.  Lovullo gives Strom full control.

Former Dback Greg Swindell is happy.  (excerpts)

That bullpen makeover started when the D-backs acquired Sewald. While all the attention was on splashy deals around the league like Justin Verlander, Jordan Montgomery and Max Scherzer, the D-backs sneakily made just as big of a deal to acquire their closer.

Adding Sewald allowed the younger relievers to settle into their roles. That then opened the door for Thompson, who was designated for assignment by the Rays in August, to become an integral middle reliever. Ginkel has been one of the hottest relievers in baseball for over a month. Saalfrank was called up at the start of September to be a lefty killer.

They want people to come out. (?)

I went to all the Fall Ball games last year. Did they televise the Thurs-Fri games of the FWS? I can't remember.

    Just the first game.

The annual Fall World Series will be played Thursday-Saturday, November 3-5, with the series opener set to be broadcast on Longhorn Network at 6 p.m.

    https://texassports.com/news/2022/10/6/baseball-announces-2022-fall-schedule.aspx

You mentioned you spoke with a player at a tailgate who stated Pierce elected not to play another opponent during the Fall to better evaluate the players.   Did he seem pro/con or indifferent ?

  15. Dlisappointed the media oligarchs in Bellmont have not released the post game press conf on TexasSports or YouTube (that I can find).   An abbreviated version was on Texas Game Day Final but seemed to be far from the completed version.

UH, USC, and others are available.

In any case, I wouldn't be surprised if the other 3 non-conference series were all at home, or maybe one close road series (Rice?).

    https://riceowls.com/sports/baseball/schedule

Rice published their schedule this week.    No Texas,  will play Notre Dame, Stanford, aggy and LSU.

In spite of Pierce allegedly cancelling the traditional Stanford series,  note how Stanford schedules.   They hosted Rice and Tech last year (maybe a home/home),  played @ OU.  Played at the Round Rock Tournament in '21 and @ UTSA.  Maintain their recruiting footprint.   I and think others miss the Stanford series.   Will be interesting to see how the demise of the PAC12 affects their program.
