President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday issued blistering criticism of Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) as House Republicans raced to meet Trumpβs latest demands to avoid a government shutdown.
βThe very unpopular βCongressmanβ from Texas, Chip Roy, is getting in the way, as usual, of having yet another Great Republican Victory β All for the sake of some cheap publicity for himself,β Trump said on his Truth Social platform, later adding, βWeak and ineffective people like Chip have to be dismissed as being utterly unknowledgeable as to the ways of politics, and as to Making America Great Again.β
In a second post, Trump said he hoped βsome talent challengersβ were preparing to run against Roy and that the incumbent βwonβt have a chance!β
It was not immediately clear how Roy upset Trump. But Roy is a well-known fiscal hawk who has resisted raising the debt ceiling, something that Trump is asking from Republican lawmakers as they rush to avert a government shutdown before the weekend.
Roy appeared to respond to Trump on X, saying: βMy position is simple β I am not going to raise or suspend the debt ceiling (racking up more debt) without significant & real spending cuts attached to it. Iβve been negotiating to that end. No apologies.β
Trump and Roy have clashed before. Trump also called for primary challengers against Roy in a Truth Social post about a year ago, though it came days after the candidate filing deadline for the 2024 primary in Texas, and Roy went unopposed.
Roy was one of the few House Republicans to back Trumpβs rival in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Trumpβs second post about Roy on Thursday also brought up Rep. Bob Good (R-Virginia), who lost his primary this year after Trump endorsed his challenger.
βBy the way, howβs Bob Good doing?β Trump asked.
