  1. Some people don’t get the idea of truly enjoying being outside versus being tough enough to be outside.
  2. Constant consumption of the perpetual outrage machines tends to have an impact.
  3. I read Blood Meridian and No Country For Old Men. My challenge in reading Blood Meridian wasn't the violence, but instead what I would call the 'thickness' of it. Very dense, many words I could not find in a dictionary and the whole punctuation thing. It was obviously great, but it was a challenging read and I was releived when I was finished with it. He wouldn't make my personal list of favorite authors. But I recognize his greatness and his skilll. RIP.
  4. Pretty much this. Been using Apollo for what feels like a long time, sad to see it go. Been on reddit a long time, and kept trimming down the subreddits I follow to basically hobbies, dad jokes, and some regional subreddits. That stated, I've been feeling like for some time it has been something I needed to basically quit wasting time on. However, I find some of the best 'how to' and adivce/reviews on products is typically found searching reddit. Will miss that. During all the talk of the API issue this article by Cory Doctorow got posted a few times: https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys It is a long but good read on why everything internet related goes to shit eventually.
  5. This. Died a rich old man. Probably left a large inheritance.
  6. Missed this news when it happened. Man, so depressing. And yeah, we definitely are fucked.
  7. At first I clicked “like.” Then I realized I was drooling so had to change it.
  8. Well, shit. Let me know which year you cover some central Oregon....
  9. Well that would be the kind of miracle that might win him a nomination or two.
  10. I approve this message. And on the matter at hand, again my condolences to all of you who knew MAC and to his family. But also my thanks. Without this thread I wouldn't have been put in touch with his writing and the impact he had on so many. I feel more enriched for having read them. Thanks for all the shares.
  11. https://apnews.com/article/758307fb4856c91138c085ad70505841 Interesting read.
  12. Looks good, but the child being the weapon plot point I feel like I have seen a few times. My bad memory prevents me from recalling all of them, but Space Sweepers on Netflix was one of them:
  13. Man, I'm only 53 but I am perfectly good with the government providing me a driver when I get even older. I have heard some countries give folks nannies for the first year of child birth, so I guess I missed out on that. Also, I will most likely hit the driver in the shins with my cane and yell "Faster, I'm running out of time!" a few times, so I hope that's OK. Just don't make me take the bus like a damn peasant.
  14. Related, I just watched this Vice show on Spike Jonze. It is mainly from a skateboarding perspective, but they touch briefly on the sabotage video (and a skate video that was almost the same):
  15. Wow. Had no real idea about him other than his postings. I have enjoyed reading some of the writing posted in this thread. Regret I come to it so late. It is of course a cliche, but I envy those who get to live on with the great work they leave behind for us as all. From the article on his mother it appears he and I share the same birth month and year. When I one day transition into cosmic dust I won't leave behind works that others will know me by. Not that this is any less tragic, but maybe there is comfort for those who know and love him in that his voice will be around for longer than many of our voices. Rest easy MAC, and sorry to all who know him personally.
  16. At some point on the trail Biff will be around 22 miles from me. I do hope to meet up with him if the timing is right.
  17. I'm not going to read and search for all the op-eds on his firing, but I hope they are mentioning his anti-vaxx stance in regards to Covid and how he's directly responsible for untold numbers dying. Perhaps a certain poster should consider that when measuring his "worth", but I know that won't happen.
  18. Your value system is fucked.
  19. About 2 years old now but you might like "The Warriors Awakening...Brings the Unholy Slaughter" by Eternal Evil.
  20. was grooving on this one just last night. Festival looks cool, but have to admit I don't know a good chunk of those bands. Know most of the 'big'ones.
  21. ^^ ^^ Nice! Saw that one today at the store.
  22. The rest of the haul. Impressive amount of folks for the store in town. Overwhelming majority were aiming for a Taylor Swift record. Neighbor kid snagged one. Apparently a huge deal for those who are fans. Edit to add more of the ODB and Orb/LSP. These are really nice. Had no idea what I was getting as I had not researched record store day releases this year. Quality stuff. Most picture discs don’t do much for me but these really pop in person.
  23. Happy Record Store Day! Edit for more pics. Pyrite vinyl.
