  1. I get we’re sad and mad, but I still hate revisionist history. Our 2023 run defense was elite, but the pass defense was easily our biggest issue as a team. The dynamic of that team was not like the last two Also, to the playoff discussion, the way we get in at 9-3 would be that the committee uses their new criteria to drop our out-of-conference loss to Ohio State. I don’t know if that happens, but the narrative leading up to the game is that neither team should be punished for scheduling it if they lose. I don’t think there’s really a path to us getting in at 9-3 on resume or eye test.
  2. Pass rush could still be elite. OU 3Q was the first time all year we had a lead against a P4 team and we had 4 sacks from then on. I will say that I haven’t been very impressed with our blitzes. We haven’t been very good at getting opposing OLs to miss assignments. But we still have some great individual pass rushers (Simmons and Spence especially).
  3. That was mostly Brooks. Baxter had the first carry on the final drive then Brooks had seven (and Keilan had one)
  4. I will say that you could feel our fan base was on edge pregame. OU chants were generally louder, though nobody that I interacted with on either side was overly confident. That punt return TD broke it all loose though and the celebrations matched. A funny thing was that the area we were at in the fair had two big screens with a 15 second desync between them. We were in the middle so we could watch both. The left screen was the one that was behind and also the one with the rowdier crowd of mostly OU fans. So we watch the punt return on the right, go crazy jumping around with some other Texas fans, then get to turn around and watch it again on the left, complete with sad sooner reactions. From there the day was just glorious.
  5. Over the past two years I have really enjoyed the new annual tradition of watching the game from the fair then walking in during the fourth quarter and sitting in empty OU seats for the end of regulation and The Eyes. This time, as my buddy and I waded through the mass Sooner exodus, we joked about whether we should take that dejected family’s seats, or maybe sit where those angry frat bros had been. Lots of choices. Once inside, one sooner guy was pretty upset about the game and decided to start talking shit. Buddy just yelled back to take the L and keep walking because we were gonna go take his seats now. The Eyes were awesome, of course. We got to go to the tunnel to watch the players exit and yell nice things. Buddy got a huge smile out of PK for yelling at him that he’s the truth or something similar. Wife got a high five from Baker and McDonald. This year was a top 3 RRS experience with 2018 and 2022. ETA some pics in spoiler. They’re kinda shitty to avoid faces
  6. At first I also thought it was weak of Casey to be complaining about the heat a year out from college, but then I remembered that he played till he was 70.
  7. The defense was designed to play with a lead and I still think it could be great if we get there. I also think some of the issues in the UF run game were uncharacteristic and correctable. First quarter was the first time we’ve had assignment issues on the edge in a long time.
  8. Fuck yes. Another chance to pitch my patented 2 QB system. First iteration was Thompson/Card, then Quinn/Arch, now Arch/Caldwell. Here's how this one goes. Caldwell takes the snap. He keeps the ball for all short throws. For intermediate and deep throws, he checks to see whether the DT is running past our LG/C untouched. The default read is that the DT has thoroughly embarrassed Stroh/Brooks/Hutson, in which case he hands the ball to Arch so that Arch can try to evade the DT and make the throw. If the defense had a communication issue and had no DL on the field at the snap, Caldwell keeps and makes the pass. On run plays, Caldwell can do whatever the hell he wants because he and Arch are both perfectly capable of running for what's blocked and going down on first contact.
  9. Bobby also predicted a 3-2 start into 10-2 finish preseason so he’s not as unprepared emotionally as most of us (though I doubt he’s still thinking 10-2 lol)
  10. I agree with the sentiment that we need more of these, but Arch hasn’t been very good at them. Against UF the throwback screen to Clark was low, the inside screen to Endries was late and got him lit up for one yard, the TD throw to Wisner was late, and he nearly threw a horrific INT on an RPO. He had a couple other RPOs that were completed, but one was still a bit off target. Against OSU he had the miss to Wingo on the final 3rd and 5 among others. Another game he had the turndown to Livingstone on the rollout that would become an INT in the end zone. Still think we need these to stretch defenses horizontally and get reps for improvement, but I get why it’s not just an easy fix for Sark, especially since this was the plan for the entire offseason.
  11. Sark only has one draft eligible class plus his transition class. I’m on record about how the 2022 class was underwhelming elsewhere, but draft development is a weird thing to criticize at this point. To answer the question: Sark has signed and developed 4 more 1st and 2nd rounders (Banks, Murphy, Worthy, Brooks) than Herman, who only sent one of his recruits to the league after his fourth year (Cosmi). Connor Williams was also drafted in the second round under Herman, but he was a Strong signee and therefore doesn’t count under your criteria. Sark did put 4 more Herman recruits into the first two rounds (Sweat, Collins, Bijan, Barron). That seems like a positive for Sark though? To your stuff about the portal, Sark has three portal players in the first three rounds (Mitchell, Mukuba, Golden). Sark’s “stars” have been a pretty even split of his signees (4), Herman holdovers (4), and portal players (3). That’s not a bad thing. Sark deserves a lot of credit for talent acquisition and development. Arguing about recruiting and the draft uncritically misses the real issues: poor talent acquisition specifically on the OL, poor coaching in the run game, penalties, special teams, and situational football (RZ/3D). Those things are sinking us. They’re so glaringly bad we can’t overcome the expected growing pains and occasional off performance.
  12. I get the angst in this thread but Sark did fire Andre Coleman after one year and had a mutual parting of ways with Brennan Marion after a year. Flood is a much different situation given how long they’ve coached together but let’s not rewrite history. There’s plenty else to bitch about.
  13. I thought it was pretty clear in offseason reporting that Terry and French weren’t going to contribute this year and Lockett would mostly play in mop up duty and if there are injuries
  14. I dont have an issue with PFF grades as a data point, but asking a word prediction machine for them and posting the response here seems like a great way to fuck up the otherwise pristine and wise commentary that I come to surly for
  15. Can we stop posting AI answers on PFF grades? It’s taking an already meaningless (but fun) metric and making it inaccurate
  16. Also the best comp for Stroh that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is true freshman Cole Hutson shudders
  17. This got me thinking about Bijan running behind the 2021 OL. That line was Jones / Okafor / Majors / Angilau / Kerstetter. Even though we’re crashing/strohking out on this thread, I think this line is better than that one? I have a lot of memories of Bijan getting hit behind the line that year, but maybe the memorable part is him breaking tackles and getting highlight runs. At least this one generally pass blocks well.
  18. To this point, I care much more about how we play against SHSU than UTEP. If we can get our starters out in the middle of the third quarter this week, that’s success in my book, even if there’s still some frustrations. Improve on penalties and 3rd down, rotate a ton, and peak next week going into the bye. If we look great against UTEP then sloppy against SHSU the bye week is going to be miserable around here.
  19. We’ve been sucked into rehashing last year’s run offense (again), but I want to point out that the original claim was that we’ve struggled with running the ball against quality opponents for 4 years. That’s Sark’s entire tenure. Wild claim. Some have forgotten that our run offense was far ahead of the pass game for multiple years and featured these highlights: - We closed a season running wildcat because all our QBs were hurt - We won multiple games by shutting down the offense and only running the ball in the second half - The biggest complaint about our first CFP loss was that we didn’t stick with the run - We had 4 OL and 5 RBs drafted (that I can remember off the top of my head) I don’t have the time or desire to go into individual game box scores, player accolades, or coach advancements, but it’s just not true that Sark/Flood are incapable of putting together a good run offense that performs against good teams. It is true, however, that Sark’s tenure is now long enough that people are forgetting what actually happened along the way
  20. Agree with the general idea (fact) that Arch has more time in a college system than most first time starters this decade, but the playbook this year is pretty clearly different than the last couple years lots of the same concepts in the pass game but there’s still a learning curve to executing in a new way
  21. Yeah, I'm not trying to say he's a space player. Just someone that can run to the sideline fast enough to keep contain. I guess I'm assuming there's some additional pursuit from the backside.
  22. We have a lot of guys that can do it and we’ll mix up who does it down to down. Hill and Simmons have been great at it but Smith, Moore, Spence, Lefau, Zina should all be more than capable Burks and Kanak both looked better than expected yesterday. That’s good news for them
  23. Uh, TEs are our best performing unit through 2 games. What are we doing here?
  24. I'm also expecting a CSU box score, but Waddlington mentioned on his pod that SJSU took 7 deep shots against CMU. So we'll have some opportunities to get after the QB if that holds. (I think it ways 7 of 20+ yards but the 7 number might have included intermediate throws of 10+)
