I'm not absolving Sark of all blame or anything like that. But we, as fans and CFB watchers, need to adjust offensive expectations. Scoring is down across the country. There aren't wholesale changes to be made that will 'fix' our offense to our fans' liking. There were three top ten matchups over the weekend and Miami led all participants in scoring with 27. Only two of the six teams broke 20 points. The difference between our offense and those of the other elite teams is in the margins. Those margins have been discussed ad nauseum.
For a decade+, offenses ran CFB. We waited for defenses to adjust and now they have. It's also striking how much more athletic elite defenses are than their offensive counterparts. OSU has the best receivers in the country and we shrugged. Their defense was certainly more athletic than our O.
I also think the change to a running clock outside of 2-minute scenarios is forgotten by many. When combined with an increase in rushing attempts, that's cutting several drives per game and somewhere between a FG and a TD off scoring averages.
Again, this isn't meant to deflect specific criticisms of Sark. My big gripe is that I want to see Wingo used like Worthy. I just think the conversation needs to be about how we can get to 28 points per non-cupcake game, not 35.
