  1. When I said discounted, I was referring to getting the access for less than actually buying a membership (I.e. the annual fee for the card is less than a membership). I guess I phrased that poorly. Mea culpa.
  2. This is off topic to credit cards, but still relevant to this thread... Since I was AA Gold/Platinum for a number of years earlier because work made me travel, the last 2 years, when I haven't made Gold, AA has offered to let me pay for a Status boost so I at least get Gold. I did it last year and plan on doing it again this year. I've got till 1/31 to sign up. Currently, it's $595, but I'm waiting to see if it will drop price again (initial offer was $735). I travel 4-8 times a year (at least twice to the Caribbean) so it seems to make sense. I get to purchase premium seating up front, which I like. And I can do 500 mi upgrades. Plus, now that I live in Corpus, a lot of my flights will be CRP-DFW, and I've got about a 60% hit rate on auto upgrade on those. Any downsides that I haven't thought of (yeah...the money, I got that)? And towards the CC side, I've got an AMEX Plat for lounge access (and I can get 5x points booking through them) and just got an AA Executive card for the sign up and discounted Admiral's Lounge (I've noticed that I always seem to end up closer to one of those rather than a AMEX lounge). Thoughts on that strategery?
  3. What are y'all's thoughts about getting a good amount of points, but not using them right away? I've got 300K AMEX MR points, 450K Hilton points, 200K AA points and about 200K Marriott points. I travel 4-10 times a year, both for business and personal (and I have cards that give me extra points on all of those). I was thinking about letting things build up for several more years (possibly until I retire somewhere between 5 and 9 years from now). Then, I'd use the absolute shit out of them until they were gone. Or, should I slowly bleed them out every year as I do my personal travel? FWIW, I do at least one trip to the Caribbean/Belize and at least one trip to New Orleans a year... Up until now, I've spent them here and there, but I'm looking at getting some bigger vacations later
  4. I made sure to genuflect as they were boarding, to show I understood my caste level.
  5. When I boarded DFW-MCO a couple weeks ago, I'd say 50% of the plane was boarded in Groups 1-3. I felt so pedestrian with my measly Group 4 status...
  6. Did not know that imgur was screwed up here. If I get the chance this weekend, I'll try to clean it up and relink the pics. Is there an iPhone app I can use to host the pics so I don't have to save them to my computer first?
  7. Ok....here's my food porn from my Thanksgiving-ish trip. Got in late Friday night. Went to Daisy Duke's on Carondalet. Bottomless Hurricanes for $16. Got my money's worth. Food is...ok. Didn't care because Hurricanes... Go here late night. Great people working there (bunch of them are Serbians). 8. BTW, if you're willing to travel a little outside town, La Cabana in Lakehills is also pretty good. We always eat there when I'm visiting my Dad (he lives there by Medina Lake). I'm usually not a fan of Mexican rice...I douse it with salsa to make it better. But, I really like theirs. No need to doctor it up.
  9. El Chaparral in Helotes is pretty good.
  10. We'll be coming directly from Willa Jean's brunch. Doubt we'll be very hungry...
  11. I'll bring that up, but I have a feeling the GF will shoot it down quickly...
  12. Thanks! I'll put that on my list. BTW, I was going to find a place to watch the Cowboys play on Sunday afternoon. Got any good recs for a place with good beer, food, but most of all good TVs?
  13. Well, based on a number of recs from on here, I added GW Fins as our Tuesday reservation. I'm planning on the Tempura Fin Wings as one of our meals. What else should we look at trying? NOTE: The GF is not an oyster fan (her loss), but I am...
  14. Getting in to NOLA Saturday late evening... We have reservations for brunch Sunday at Willa Jeans (never been, but want) and dinner Monday at Commander's Palace (had the tasting menu last time and it was good enough to warrant another trip). We're staying through Wednesday afternoon, so I'd like to get one more reservation for Tuesday...then play all the other meals by ear. Any recs for Tuesday (lunch or dinner)? Definitely trying Ruby Slipper for one of our breakfasts (we did Stanley's last time and it was awesome). BTW, are all the Ruby Slippers the same quality? We'd probably try the closest one to us in the CBD.
  15. Friends of our got married right there on that dock in June 2018... Had a great time on the island. We were all supposed to go back in June, but my work had some crap come up so I missed it. Made my GF go without me so at least ONE of us had a good time that week.
  16. What's the best late night meal I can get there? We're flying in on the 23rd and don't arrive until 10:30 or so, so it'll be 11:30 min before we get to our hotel and be ready to head out. We're staying at the Blake Hotel in the CBD, so not that far from the Quarter. At this hour, drinks are on par with food quality in terms of importance. This is our 3rd trip there. We've been in the Quarter the last 2 times so it'll be interesting to explore a little different part of the city. Never been to the CBD so recs there would also be appreciated. I will include food porn in a post after I'm back... OR real porn if you'd like that better.
  17. They were down at the bowl...between markers 263/264. That's about 5 miles from my house... No beach camping for me anymore....
  18. That really sucks to hear about Tip Top. I've got lots of memories as a kid chowing down there...
  19. Jacala off of West Ave for good Tex Mex. Tip Top Cafe for CFS My Dad grew up in SA (went to the old and new Edison HS). So, when we moved there we used to go to that area a lot.
  20. It's been 50 years since I've been there...it's my "homeland"...sort of. I'd like to go back, since I don't remember any of it (I was about 11 months old when we left).
  21. Jacala off West Ave. Pretty good Mexican food.
  22. They're going to get rid of Shorty's? Well, THAT sucks...
  23. Yep. That's them. I've never met her, but he's a good guy. And that tuna steak is awesome... I'm on a Keto diet right now so I can't do the sushi, but the sushi is pretty good. And the oysters are always legit. They also have these crackers that they serve with them that are crazy good (wish I could eat them..fucking diet)
  24. I've never seen any coke in Scuttlebutt's and I've spent a lot of time there. The owner is a pretty good guy and seems to keep the place running well. You're right about the HH. Not just on drinks, but half price oysters/shrimp/crab/mussels/sushi. Really great deal.
