  1. I came here to make fun of Briscoe Cain but then I read this and felt bad. AUSTIN — A Texas lawmaker spoke publicly for the first time Thursday about his struggle with autism. Rep. Briscoe Cain revealed he has Asperger's Syndrome during a speech on the House floor marking Autism Awareness Month. Flanked by his colleagues at the front microphone of the chamber, the Deer Park Republican said it was time for him to tell his story.
  2. It’s more of a PAC in name only. No sense in me collecting money when people could just as easily send it through act blue and make reoccurring donations as needed. If somebody wants to take the time, I’ll gladly support it though. I do think it will be a fun experiment to see how a group of motivated people from all over can influence a race. At the very least, I hope that it will get people to pay more attention to smaller races. Some good names being thrown out so far, but for US house seats. I would encourage people to think even more locally with the Texas house. Our money would go a long way there.
  3. Bill? 😁
  4. A few of us libtards have kicked around the idea of banding together to support a candidate in a race where our financial contributions would actually matter. We know that Texas turning blue will end the republican party as we know it and the shift to the left has already been felt in recent elections. We are finally living in a time where there is hope for Texas and the demographics support us winning NOW. The main impediment is lack of voter participation and organization. If people still have an interest in this, we can use this thread to discuss potential candidates, pick one, discuss progress and celebrate a blue victory. Some things to consider when selecting a candidate: 1. Is the person in a very competitive district? Bonus points for Texas House as we have a chance to flip it this cycle. Think of the huge loss of power for guys like Patrick and Abbott that this would create. 2. Does the person support policies that the surly liberal elite are likely to support? 3. Is this person running in or near a major Texas city so that people can get involved in other ways? 4. Does this person collect donations through Act Blue? 5. Would this person be willing to drink with surly posters if we organized a gathering of angry drunk liberals? So, my thought is that we can start making sales pitches for particular candidates below. We have plenty of time, so no need to decide in the near future. Once we have a person, know more about them, and the area where they are running, we can decide more. Please post here if you are interested so that we can gauge that. Also, give a write up for your favorite candidate and why they are worthy of Surly support.
  5. I’m backing warren but she needs to work on her messaging for health care. She’s not far off but she needs bullet points for what it’s going to look like and how it’s going to be paid for.
  6. Liz coming out strong. Really hoping she comes out swinging and solidifies herself as the overwhelming favorite.
  7. Bonnen is an idiot but was our best bet as speaker until the Dems take over. This is bad news IMO. Just imagine if we have somebody more aligned with empower Texans or Dan Patrick running the house. Straus and Bonnen have been the only somewhat sane voice in leadership.
  8. Set up an act blue account and throw $10 at a local candidate in a close race whenever you can. Large numbers of people donating small amounts has become a great asset to Democrats in the last few years. You live in a great area to impact national politics. Texas is turning blue and when that happens the entire country will see a huge shift to the left. Be a part of that process by getting out the vote. Low turnout is the only reason Texas isn’t blue already. Also, specifically support candidates that are in competitive districts in the DFW burbs. That is the front line to taking back the Texas House of Representatives. It’s not out of reach for the first time in forever.
  9. The fucker had a 57 million dollar house in Manhattan, a private islands, and this “ranch” yet people still use their vote to benefit the 1% over their poor and middle class. It’s astonishing. Im not even a big proponent of soaking the rich, but could we not go out of our way to benefit them at every turn? Christ.
  10. Counterpoint: texags
  11. This week warren passed Biden on my sportsbook as the favorite. Great sign.
  12. The suburbs are becoming much more diverse and I think that will upend some of the social situations. It 100% will have an impact on the politics. It’s a big reason why my western wilco district went from reliably red to having a blue state rep. That trend is just heating up and will hopefully completely trash the republican gerrymandering. It’s only a matter of how fast that will happen. Raydog seems to think 2020 will be a good year for the Dems and has stats to support it. I say 2024 and nothing but cynicism to hang my hat on.
  13. My hope is that they are seeing that Texas is going blue faster than expected and just don’t want to deal with the fallout of it. I also buy lotto tickets, which are worth about as much as my dreaming.
  14. My wife has some health issues and it’s damn near a full time job dealing with doctors and insurance companies. I’m not sure how she would be able to do it if she had a more demanding job. She works from home and can work while she is on hold for 45 minutes at a time.
  15. People should be able to keep shotguns and rifles for hunting. I’m even ok with handguns for home defense that must be left at home. All the open carry, driving around with guns, and any type of AK/AR weapon needs to go. I would give people 6 months to sell their “assault weapon” then it’s 10 years in jail for possession of one and life for selling one. It’s way past time to end these mass shootings.
  16. I’m assuming county because Hays county is the one that caved to pressure during the Texas state mess.
  17. I guess that brings up another question. How does intentional voter suppression factor into the predictions? Rural voting locations aren’t going to have long lines even with the changes. Retired people can go at off times or just wait all day. Single working moms will see a line and know that daycare is closing in an hour and that they will never make it. GOTV efforts are going to have to push early voting harder than ever. Dems also need to push for as many polling locations as possible and for them to stay open as long as possible. Texas State had one but it was only open for two days then closed until people went to the media with it. The location was eventually reopened but how many times did that happen and we never heard about it?
  18. That last paragraph is crazy. You seem more bullish on 2020 being the year things flip the things start looking really good by 2024. I don’t want to get ahead of myself but it seems like Texas could be purple for only a few election cycles.
  19. Some unanswerable questions that remain in relation to the info raydog posted: Do the people moving to the major metro areas vote dem at the same rate that the current residents do? Do they turn out at the same rate as current residents? 2018 makes the trend look really promising but was it an outlier? Beto drove turnout against a complete turd. As stated by others, the removal of the straight ticket option is a wild card. Republicans clearly think this is to their advantage. I’m not so sure, especially regarding trump, but we will see. Its hard data to quantify but I actually think the rate at which old, white, reliable republican voters are dying is being underplayed, especially for non-presidential years. These people vote in every election. I just look at my own extended family and know that 50% of the republican voters likely won’t be around in 2024.
  20. It’s our fault. We made them do it. But also personal responsibility.
  21. It’s not great but this is a blip on the radar. She has enough of a track record over the last 20 year to where people know what she is all about. Also, about 1% of the population even knows about stuff like the conservative groups warren spoke to 25 years ago. Hell, 75% of the population probably doesn’t even know who she is yet.
  22. Do you find him shallow and pedantic?
  23. The text of that tweet is so spot on.
  24. My sports book put this up today. I’m really surprised. ODDS TO WIN 2020 PRESIDENTIAL RACE Republicans -120 Democrats -120
