Hit an extension ladder on I-20 west of Fort Worth in my 88 Mercury Cougar back in ~1990. Β Bent a plate that protects the exhaust pipe up to the point it was touching the pipe and giving me a constant very high pitched metal-on-metal squeak. Β Took it to the local muffler shop the next day, dude lifted it up on the rack, found the source of the problem, bent the plate back into place and sent me on my way with no charge. Β That and a little paint loss from the very bottom of the air dam up front was it, didn’t even knock the wheels out of alignment.

    Β

Happened at night, with low beams on and my GF distracting me I didn’t even have time to come off cruise control before I hit it. Β Probably a good thing.

Sounds like you were lucky the bump didn’t make the gf bite down.Β

Dammit, was carrying a 10' HD fiberglass A frame ladder back to the garage when I had a sudden pain like I had been stabbed in the left hip.Β  Immediately afterwards I could not bear any weight on that side for about 5 minutes. I can now, but it's still pretty tender. After doing some Googling it appears to be towards the top of the Iliotibial band(?) Anyone else experience like this?

Sounds a lot like the sciatica that I dealt with a couple of months ago. I agree with @tbone_, you should roll the heck out of your IT band, but if it turns into something that makes it agony to sit down or stand up, then go see your chiro.Β

Went to UTRGV graduation on Saturday for a relative. Pre-ceremony speeches were maybe Β 15 minutes total, and that was with them being given in both English & Spanish. Graduates & their families were asked to leave after the graduate walked the stage. Made for a nice non-logjam when leaving. Also they put a photo & quote from the graduate up on the big screen as they walked across. It made watching the School of Nursing graduation very enjoyable. Easily the most bearable graduation I’ve ever been to.Β

We went to a nephew's wedding a few weeks ago.Β  The bride has a big, close family and included most of them in the wedding in some way.Β  She had cousins up and down the maids/matrons of honor and groomsmen.Β  I think 10 on each side.Β  When it came time for the toasts in the wedding reception, I think every single one of them gave a toast, which was not a toast, but a meandering talking about the family and friends.Β  The father-of-the-bride speech alone took 30 minutes.Β  3 hours later, and after the scheduled time for the end of the reception, the toasts finally ended, and the fun part of the reception was supposed to start, around 10 pm.Β  That was freaking agony.Β  Most people checked out.

If you're giving a toast at a wedding, keep it short and sweet.Β  And not everyone needs a freaking microphone.Β  Get in, get out, and get on with the program.Β Β

Update. Of course the flunky county appraiser Chad (really, his name is Chad) couldn’t make an adjustment based on documentation of an arm’s length sale of the property one year ago. I have to file a protest and take it to a hearing.Β
The absolute best evidence of market value is what a willing buyer will pay a willing seller. That is 31% below their appraisal.Β
And the house was unliveable. Had to redo septic and multiple other systems before I could live there, to the tune of $100k.Β

We have a new entry in the "aggy fairy tale of the year" contest.

First of all, I'mΒ  not recalling any references pointing us to the context of U.S. Army officers being housed en masse with local french families. The story starts to fall apart right there. My memory of American military activities in Normandy during WWII was moving out of there toward first Paris, then Berlin asap. Maybe the Army left aggys behind the lines while the rest of the forces moved forward.

regardless, I'm calling bullshit on this. For obvious reasons:

    Β

"This was posted many years ago and I have searched to no avail. I am going to try and repost from memory in hopes that someone will remember or be able to find the original. As stated, this was many years ago so the details will undoubtedly be flawed, but the story itself is exactly as I remember it:

    TA Poster:

I was recently traveling in the Normandy region of France when something amazing happened to me. I had stopped in at a local bar in the small town of ____ and was having a beer when I noticed an older gentleman a few seats away staring at me. At first, I thought nothing of it, but as it continued, I had to ask if we knew each other. Mind you, I knew no one in France.

He said "No" but with a tear in his eye, and now rolling down his cheek, he asked if he could tell me a story. Of course I said yes and here is what he said:

"When I was a young boy, our small town, like all of France, was occupied by Nazi soldiers. All of the younger men were gone to fight and so there were only women, us kids, and elderly men. This was a brutal time and the Nazis took whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted and everyone lived in constant fear of being killed, even us kids.

Finally the Americans liberated France and the Nazis puled out and the U.S. Army moved in. They announced that their officers would be moving in with the various families in our village. While we were very glad to have the Nazis gone, we were unsure what to think after our recent experiences.

A young American officer moved in with my Mother, Grandfather and I and it was unforgettable. He was a true gentleman, respectful of our home, and most of all he was very kind to me. Even though he was only there for a few weeks, he was the greatest hero I had ever known and I idolized him for that.

This ring you are wearing (my Aggie ring) is the same ring he wore. I had never seen it before and I have never seen it since until you walked in and sat at the bar today.

Thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory from a terrible time." "

  15. Had never heard of this. My gaming days started with Pong, were at their height with NES, Sega Genesis, and 1G Doom on PC, so anything since then is a gap in my pop culture knowledge (except for playing Wii with my kids). Β
So I went back and found the clip. Pretty funny, even if it was staged.Β
