  1. Re: the Yormark comments "Sports wagering has become a serious problem that threatens the well-being of the student-athlete and the integrity of college sports." College Sports Betting – NCAA Official Statement. Athletes are suspended or banned for betting because it calls into question the integrity of the game. You don't need to show the player influenced the game one way or the other - simply identifying the plausibility of inappropriate influence seems to be sufficient. Considering the connection between conference leadership and the management of officiating, these comments seem to fall within the same spirit of the sports betting rationale.
  2. What about kids at heart with salt/pepper hair and a few areas of their game that they need Stein to diagnose and correct?
  3. I don't know about the boots or hat, but I hope they got rid of the wide white stripe on the back of the jerseys.
  4. The AVP events page still shows the championship being Sept 22-23. The web page with the details still says the location is TBD. I just noticed that details page now says: "New Dates to Be Announced". I'm pretty sure this page used to reflect the 9/22-23 dates.
  5. Some of my MBO observations: Trevor got a yellow for slapping the net... with Taylor lobbying the ref to give him the card. The fans laughed. The Taylors and Tri/Chaim are trying to sprinkle in option offense, but they all look at least a year behind Benesh/Partain in that dept. Not sure if it was the rain packed sand or confidence or what, but Taylor Sander was uncorking a few serves Sunday in the second championship set like I hadn't seen from him since the AVP Championships indoor in Phoenix last year - granted, I don't watch every AVP/FIVB event. The pace is obvious, but he also adds that dangerous lateral break that some of the indoor guys have. It's not just a 12-6 curve - it looks like more of a slider with lateral break too. Thank God I'm not receiving those. Sponcil was out there walking around Fri I think. Curious to see what she and Cannon do at Chicago and for any other FIVB events. Lots of talk (no idea how legitimate it is) about her joining forces with Klineman. Zana was swinging harder than I've seen in the past. My forecast: the next six or so months is going to be chaotic for pairings on the women's side below Cheng/Hughes and Kloth/Nuss. You can sense there are numerous teams that are either unhappy or just ok with one another or losing out on the Olympic race and you need that one domino to fall before you have half a dozen new teams (but the same names) in the main draws. There are a few guys I could see parting ways too, but seems like more stability on the men's side right now. I'd love to see Scoles take some time to work out as a defender. Obvious problem is: where do you find a good enough (presumably American) big who will work with her? Kolinske? Maybe pick up Cannon for a year? Split block with Kraft? Try to lure a Klineman/KWJ? Talked to a few people about the championship location. A few people who probably would know either didn't say anything or they sincerely didn't know what's going on. The fan rumor mill is basically "assuming the bankruptcy/sale doesn't deep six the 'TBD Championship', the odds are on it being held in Vegas".
  6. Vince Vaughn casually walking around out here
  7. Surly is on-site at the MBO. A few top end teams missing due to FIVB and we'll have to dodge a hurricane, but we'll make make the most of it.
  8. Are they putting decommit penalties in addition to repayment in NIL contracts? If you just have to pay the money back after a decommit with no penalty, then why not get the money several months early and use your next (presumably larger) NIL deal to pay whatever delta you spent? Not the highest integrity move if you're using a university/sponsor knowing you're eventually going somewhere else, but the decision to turn this into a business has been made.
  9. I think I see what you're saying here. If you're a rent-a-player and taking re-bid’s every year for your services, it doesn’t matter... as long as transfer portal rules don’t change. Does the recruit (or his family/agent) intending to be on campus 3+ yrs look at this and perceive a risk to what they were projected, promised, or signed up for in the out years? Not sure if NIL contract durations are typically 1 year, multi year, open ended.
  10. Another rain delay... same thing last year right?... ugh... I just don't understand the Gold Series stop in Atlanta. Best case, you've got uncomfortable hot, humid August weather. Worst case, you've got almost guaranteed afternoon thunderstorms and, granted it's a ways inland, but you're on the front end of hurricane season. I don't know - maybe I'm missing something. I travel to these AVPs and have never felt a desire to go to Atlanta in Aug. TKN smoked the Canadians again. Looked more or less like a replay of their earlier match, albeit more dominating. Mel struggling to side out again? 8 hitting errors today - can't afford that with Nuss digging everything else. Montreal Elite 16 hangover? Kloth tallied more kills than I would have guessed. Did they try serving her? Then Partain/Benesh smoked CBud and other Miles. 9 hitting errors in two sets for Evans... ouch I feel obligated to propose an alternative in light of my Atlanta grouching comments above. Below is a first cut at my idealized AVP schedule below... and, yes, I'm aware you don't just pick a city and make an AVP event happen. Trying to combine places with active volleyball communities, attractive location for travelers, large enough to support a profitable event, etc. Annual stops: - Tampa/Clearwater - Austin (I get why AVP/players didn't like Krieg, but you need at least one annual stop in TX) - New Orleans - Hermosa Beach - Hawaii (It'd be nice for the HI players to play in front of a home crowd) - Manhattan Beach - Chicago - San Diego Championship: - alternating between South Bay, San Diego, TX. I'd like to put one in FL, but hard to plan an outdoor fall championship in hurricane season Alternating year stops: - Miami/Ft Lauderdale - Washington/Vancouver - DFW/San Antonio/Houston - FL Panhandle / Gulf Shores - Washington DC / NYC / Rehoboth Beach - Huntington / Santa Barbara - Bradford Beach, Milwaukee / Denver, CO
  11. And if he turns out to be wrong, he can just change his name to Chris Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-PTANG. Zoom-Boing. Z'nourrwringmm I'll see myself out
  12. Starting to hit the home stretch of the AVP season with the Gold Series starting up in Atlanta next weekend. Any of you guys going to the remaining events? Looks like Elite 16 in Hamburg will create conflicts with MBO for a few teams. Do we need to be concerned that the site and details for the 9/22-23 AVP Championship is still TBD?
  13. Oh, hell, guess I need to start penciling in some travel plans for the spring
  14. I appreciate you guys compiling this info. I'm still learning the who's who at the college level. Can anyone: 1) provide a projection of the '24 beach roster. We know there are a few question marks wrt several '23 beach players staying indoor. And then you have the grad transfer/portal variable. I'm guessing Keonilei, Devin, Marina come back. Madi and Molly are TBDs? Any other intel? 2) provide a summary of the level of the transfers and recruits coming in. Either in terms of star ratings [ducks], takes for other top teams, which pairing they project to, etc? I see we have a few UCLA players/recruits headed our way, which is a strong indicator.
  15. For the first few mins, I thought Gerry had a durag on. Longhorn Livestream | Texas Football News | Recruiting Updates | | Basketball |
  16. Wow, another seemingly really good get. Not "Stein" level splash, but I'd say well above a solid asst coach hire.
  17. Outside air pressure at cruising altitude is 3-5 psia. Cabin air pressure is something like 10-14 psia. WAG at door area would be 8 sqft or 1152 sq in. Multiplying that out, you're looking at ~10k lbs of force keeping the door shut from the inside. If you try to crack the door seal to let the cabin air out and equilibrate the pressure, now you're in a competition with the engine compressor whose bleed air maintains cabin pressure. It would have to be a substantial gap to depressurize to the point where you could get close to opening the door and odds are you're blacking out anyway at <7 psia due to lack of oxygen in that attempt.
  18. Kelly Claes/Cheng can confirm
  19. April Ross finally announced today that she’s pregnant. I did some quick internet querying while out there to make sure I hadn't missed something. It was kind of bizarre as no one there said anything. It wasn’t much of an announcement for anyone at Huntington as it looks like she’s 6-7 months in. She was coaching Scoles and Flint who made it to the finals.
  20. Here you go. Best defender out here in my opinion. I don't care what the scoreboard says. Noticing a couple of interesting body changes. Looks like a few shaved several lbs and others have been putting in work in the weightroom. And there was one other body change that I wasn't aware of.
  21. Surly is on site Bracket on both sides is pretty chalky so far. Partain/Benesh are continuing to modernize their offense. Both are mixing in a bit of optioning. More quick setting than I recall
  22. So much to get excited about here. You know how the football and basketball boards have coaching search threads and there's always the initial phase of "we know we'll never get Saban, Smart, Urban, Self, Few, Wright, etc" and then the conversation (and FlightAware queries) move to the next tier of possibilities? Stein is in that first tier of aspirational gets - arguably #1 overall. I know beach volleyball money and booster complications are nowhere near football and basketball. Just trying to help underscore how big this could be for those who don't follow as closely. We keep talking about UT Beach's potential. You now have top tier: resources, recruiting footprint, and head coach. Next step is building the roster and facilities. After that, show me a loss. Only regrets: 1) it would have been nice to get this done earlier to make some hay in the portal. Can beach players transfer in the Dec transfer window or is that reserved for fall sports? 2) man, I wish I was still on campus for this I'll be out at AVP Huntington Beach this weekend. We'll see if my Longhorn shirt starts any conversations.
