  1. That space was too big for Twin. They were trying to mimic a Spec’s, but they weren’t doing the volume. Problem with Twin is that their prices are generally higher on liquor and always higher on wine than TW or Spec’s. Sometimes I will stumble across a wine that is typically not in stores (they had some Seven Stones at the Four Points one time, and Notre Vin at the Balcones store), but it is way overpriced.
  2. Oh, there was other alcohol to fill the void
  3. Yeah, the M.Etain was young, but was great after a 2+ hour decant
  4. Dates matter somewhat, but the key is checking all of the Ritz locations for whatever dates you have. Location flexibility is as pr more important than date flexibility. Fortunately, my wife is a master at figuring this stuff out and using our points
  5. Ahh — if you look around and are flexible on dates, you can get Some of the Ritz locations (yes, good ones) for 50-60k/night. Again, you have to be flexible, but it can be done. As I mentioned, if you do 4 nights on points, you get a 5th night free as well.
  6. Ritz and St. Regis are clearly the Crown Jewels. I can recommend the following form staying there, some of these on points: Ritz properties: Aruba, Amelia Island, Tahoe, Dove Mountain, Rancho Mirage, New Orleans, Bachelor Gulch, Waikiki (it’s a Ritz Residences but they offer it like a hotel), NYC Central Park. Also stayed at the one in Dallas several times, but there are better locations obviously St. Regis: Deer Valley. Houston is nice, but no real reason to go there unless you just happen to need to stay in Houston. Next steps down are things like JW, and Autpgraph Collection. Some good locations for both of those. Great thing about Marriott — stay 4 nights on points and get a 5th night free typically
  7. Keeping it simple tonight Smoked/reverse seared rib caps Wedge salad Potatoes The stars: 2015 M. Etain cab, 2008 Dom
  8. OK — so share the garlic bread recipe!
  9. Alton Brown’s recipe — very good. 60 percent of the time it works every time https://altonbrown.com/cream-of-the-crop-cornbread-recipe/ I usually add charred green chiles
  10. By the way, I want to give another shout out for Jim’s Smokehouse, the BBQ trailer by the Bait Shop and Fort Fletch near Marshall Ford on 620. Stopped in several times, and the brisket is very good. Sausage is also good, ribs are OK but not as good as the brisket. Sides are excellent. In the 620 rankings, below Interstellar but much better than Rudy’s.
  11. Got it. I live on the other end (Four Points area).
  12. Looks great, but how did a southwest Austin restaurant get on this board?
  13. Yeah — not sure how Fuschak’s stays in business with Hays Co across the highway And all of the Mikeska locations are terrible;e
  14. I go to the Four Points H-E-B, and sometimes the Lakeway location. It can get pretty rough in the wine section Lakeway does have its own dry-aging setup for beef, which is nice.
  15. Same here. Straight vodka diet.
  16. Nice. Pre-Constellation Mondavi
  17. The results (less the torte, which is chilling for later):
  18. So I know this is a bourbon board, but the Scotch board is dead. Thought there would be plenty of general whisky knowledge here. Gift from daughter/son-in-law. Anyone familiar with this?
  19. My wife knew what to get me
  20. Well crap. Hope you get off early — Merry Christmas to you and yours
