I'd say Brian Harsin carried the 2012 team on his shoulders.

No, no, no! The Maj carried that team on his shoulders.

Of course, that's because The Maj was being carried on Harsin's shoulders...

  2. I woulda been happy if MensaTom had kept Gilbert/Mattox, but...

Briles and Leach have in common in their playcalling that they kept calling the same option play over and over until the oppo stopped it - and then ran the wrinkle/constraint of the same play.

Yeahhhh... that's an excellent question, Chip. I don't think I'm arrogant, as such. I think I'm confident that we're on the right track, and sometimes confidence comes across a little bit strong.

By the way, a lot of those same surly fans were chanting FCB! FCB! What does that mean?

I'd say this weekend is pretty much a must win for both fan support and player buy in.  Luckily Herman has a pretty good track record of getting his team up for big games.

So what? MensaTom needs some serious improvement, "pretty good" won't get it. He needs an excellent track record in getting his team up for every game. He probably has this year and next to make that happen, and it needs to start happening now. He needs to win all the games he is expected to win, and at least one he is not expected to win.

Beating SC this Saturday is a toss-up, I think. They beat a fairly bad UNLV (by scoring 24 points in Q4) and last week got stuffed by Stanford. We have to play a whole lot better than we have so far if we're going to beat them. I don't expect we will, but it is as close to a must-win as MensaTom has seen here. If he pulls it out, he will be way, way up on getting the whole thing turned around - assuming he has the sense to not act like his mommy just told him they're going to Disneyland, and instead congratulates the team and coaches (at least, the ones not named Tom Herman) on a decent performance and proceeds to enumerate what we did wrong and still need to work on - "We're getting better, but we're not a really good team, not yet."

In favor of MensaTom not being fired immediately-if-not-sooner (unintentional – 0U sucks)...

First year, with a few Mack guys and the rest Charlie guys, a few of his own. Great record? Naw, but he didn't lose, and he did win a bowl game.

Second year, almost all Charlie guys, a few of his own, and a pretty hot-shit group of freshmen. First game stunk it up and lost. Fire his ass! Second game, stunk it up, but won. Pressers less than impressive. Maybe he's bullshitting errbody, but maybe he's trying to hold onto what little coherence the team still has. Naw, fuck that, fire his ass!

If only we had Saban Saban Saban!

Oh, yeah, Saban – you know, the guy in whose first HC job he took Toledo to 9-2, kinda like MensaTom and UH? Then Nick stepped up and down, went to DC in the pros for a few years, while MensaTom stayed at Toledo – I mean, UH.

Saban fled the pro game and stepped down and up, took HC at Meatchicken State. Where his record was 6-6, 6-6, 7-5, 6-6 and 9-2 – and three bowl games, all of which he lost. (Yes, I know year one was 6-5-1, but in my book a tie is a loss, so fuck you.)

MensaTom had a winning record (no ties, 1-2 in OT games) in year one. And won the bowl game. Year 2, he's 1-1 so far... which is absolutely on par with the Ineffable Saban.

But fuck that! Fire his ass!

Is he an arrogant, peacock-vain douchebag? Why, uh, yes – yes he is. Is he winning games? Well... technically, yes. Is he winning as often and as powerfully as we want? Mmmm... no, not yet.

Well, fuck that! Fire his ass!

    Yeah... no.

Right this instant – that is, Sunday after a win over Tulsa that was no better than a lackluster performance, at best – I'm not happy with young MensaTom, as most of you who read these words can agree, charitably. Not just for losing almost half the game, but for how they're lost. He's supposed to be a hot-shit OC, but the O is the major problem with the team. It was the problem last season, too, and he didn't do fuck all to fix it. No, wait – he addressed one of the problems by hiring Hand, as most of you will agree; the OL looks to be much improved already. The BeckWareMeh problem is with us still. Regardless of what you and I think of that (he fucked up, they should have been replaced already), there isn't much he can do about it now. It's not even remotely possible to replace those three in midseason.

    What to do?

Let the season play out. If we top out 4-8, or worse, play the Titty-bar card and dump MensaTom – and his crew, unless you think Orlando has HC chops. If we head that way from here, relieve him, make Orlando Interim HC and let the season play out – but be damned sure MensaTom is done before going that far.

All in all, he's essentially right in step with Saban, at this point. I'm pissed as hell at the little fucker, and I feel like slapping the shit out of him and screaming GROW THE FUCK UP!

He's young, he's not stupid. He's a little too eager to buy into his own shit. He can get past that – maybe he will, maybe he won't. He's not hard enough, but again, that's something that remains to be seen.

I bought into his shit, mainly because the recruits looked good, the OL coach looked good (still does, at this point), and it sounded like he was having an effect on Offense.

I guess I'm still stuck in the GoodMack years, because I predicted 10-2 +/-2, which is 8-4 to 12-0. That seems laughable now, but maybe something wonderful happens this week and we commence to improve game-by-game. We can still get to 8-4 or better – granted, it sure as hell doesn't seem to dan likely, but...

We're just gonna hafta wait and see. We don't hafta be happy about it.

  6. XII refs seem to call against XII teams in OOC games regularly. Generally, the visitors bring their conference refs, but while most seem to benefit from that, I've seen XII teams getting that shitty end of the stick quite often. Awhile back, KSU played Stanford, there, with XII refs. Toward the end of a close game KSU got called for PI in the end zone on a very questionable call, setting up Stanford for a TD. KSU responded well, drove down and on consecutive plays had receivers absolutely mugged in the end zone (one I think was actually tackled before the ball arrived) with no call either time.

Anent visitor refs, last year we let SC force Pac12 refs in our game there. Are we gonna insist on XII refs at home against SC? Hell, we might be better off if we don't...

Here's a fun scenario to think about: our defense steadily improves throughout the year, and despite spending a lot of time on the field due to our inept offense, becomes a very good unit. The offense continues to look like Derka trying to dribble 2 basketballs at the same time. We end up with 6 or so regular season wins and recruiting stalls/takes a nose dive as a result. Orlando realizes his stock is high and that his job of recruiting top talent and putting up top defenses is only going to get more difficult and decides to take a HC job. Meanwhile, Herman parts ways with Beck, Warehime, & Mehringer.

In this scenario, how confident are you Herman is going to make hires that can save his job?

Not very confident at all - if he could do that, he woulda already, no?

It's possible, even feasible, but likely? Less than 50-50, imo. But, again unlike Charlie, he's a young guy and some young guys actually learn from their mistakes. Whether he admits to the mistakes or not, I don't give a fuck - as long as he learns and applies and the W's start coming, it's all good in my book.

  8. MensaTom may survive the season, but if he doesn't rebuild his O-staff from the top down, he's going to be shown the door sooner rather than later. Beck needs to go. Mehringer needs to go. Never hear about Drayton, but his RBs are not performing up to the hype, so... Not sure what Warehime does, but whatever it is, it isn't working. Meekins ditto. Hand stays, no doubt.

The other day, in the midst of a discussion on Hermlololololol, some talking head mentioned asking Pete Carroll what a new HC moving from pro game to college game needs to know and do, and said that Pete's advice was to get the best OC, DC, and OL coaches you can, and fill the rest of the staff with superstar recruiters. The DC and OL parts seem to be in good shape now, and the OC part is obviously fucked; the recruiting part seems to be pretty decent, so... absolutely, Beck goes, no room for negotiation; the others stay or go depending on whether the coaches are or are not coachable themselves and are or are not star recruiters.

Y'all followers of recruitment, what are the observed levels of recruiting stardom for the "other" O coaches?

  9. Shane's propensity for self-sacking has been driven by seriously bad pass-pro. The OL looked quite a bit better than last year. Given a choice between Sam's inaccurate throws and INTs (while not playing to his edge in running ability) and Shane's excessive self-sackage, I'd go with Shane. At least for a series or two. Not a fan of alternating QBs within a series, but if you don't give both a look, you're doing it wrong.

That bullshit with Of Mice and Men and "our players trying too hard" was plenty embarrassing.

Naaaahhh... by the time that hit the air, pretty muchly errbody was already all outta embarrassment - sorry you weren't.

I think our offense would've hummed if we ran more option, but I guess we didn't want to David Ash young Sam.

There's no excuse for that. There's an actual QB behind Sam. This would be his first year with a line that can even spell  pass-pro, so we don't yet have any idea what his capabilities really are.
