Gotcha..thought there’d be a number on a Texas department of health dashboard or something

The Texas DSHS dashboard only gives a one day snapshot on recoveries (60,600), but you can download a spreadsheet to track active cases by county. So, all one can really say at this point is that about two-thirds of all confirmed cases in the state have recovered so far but the number of active cases is increasing.

I think you posted the Minnesota one sometime in the past and I recall it being a lot better than ours.

Thanks.. I meant if active as in yesterday if there was 100 new cases and 50 recoveries, it’d add just 50 to the active real time total, not the span of the last 3.5 months

Yeah, I'm not going to try to backtrace the math on counting recoveries versus new cases by day. Whatever that calculation is results in an increase of 12,000 "active cases" over a roughly two-week period in Texas. In other words, on June 1st, there were 21,000 people who were confirmed as being actively sick on that day and, yesterday, there were 33,000 people actively sick with it.

India-China dispute: The border row explained in 400 words

In 400 words, here is all the important background to help you understand what is going on.

    What happened in the clash?
At least 20 Indian soldiers were killed in Monday night's incident. It happened in Galwan Valley in the disputed Ladakh region.

China accused Indian troops of crossing the border twice, "provoking and attacking Chinese personnel".

Both sides insisted that no shots were fired. Indian officials gave accounts of fighting with bare hands, iron rods and stones.

There were reports of Chinese casualties, but no official confirmation.

Military officials from both countries later met to "defuse the situation", the Indian army said.

    Why are they fighting?
The military superpowers have been arguing for decades over territory in the high-altitude, largely uninhabited region.

Their armies come face to face at many points along the 3,440km (2,100-mile) shared border.

The confrontation came after tensions bubbled up in recent months over a new road India built in Ladakh, along the Line of Actual Control which divides the sides.

That angered China, which deployed troops and built infrastructure of its own in disputed territory, bringing the two sides' forces in closer proximity and heightening the risk of clashes.

    Why does it matter?
Both sides see the area as strategically important, economically and militarily.

If neither gives way, the stand-off could have destabilising consequences for the region.

The loss of life raises the stakes. Those deaths are believed to be the first in 45 years in a border confrontation between India and China.

They have fought only one war, in 1962, when India suffered a humiliating defeat.

    How dangerous could this be?
Potentially very, if efforts to reduce tensions fail.

In recent days, army generals from India and China have been involved in talks aimed at resolving the border row.

However, similar reconciliation attempts have stalled in the past.

If they are not successful, there is a risk of escalation between two rivals who happen to be the world's most populous countries - and have nuclear weapons.

"This is extremely, extremely serious, this is going to vitiate whatever dialogue was going on," former Indian army commander DS Hooda said, commenting on Monday's clash.

A map of the region (it's complicated):

Just want to repost what I posted two months ago before the stock market shot up to its current level. This looks to be what’s ahead of us in my opinion. That second wave could do some serious serious damage.

The problem, at least in Texas, is that the first wave never really subsided. We climbed up the slope, held steady, and now we're going up the next one, so I don't even know if this could be technically called a second wave but rather a rising tide. It should go without saying levels off soon and we can keep it manageable because there's no way we're going to be shutting down again. We're just going to have to modify our behaviors and learn to live with it (unless it reaches ITALY!!! levels) until there's a vaccine.

So do you think that the statues of Columbus that have been torn down were originally erected to celebrate the wrongs committed upon the indigenous people or was it erected to celebrate him finding the new world?

The latter. In another thread, I stated that I probably wouldn't take down the Columbus one in NYC because it's intent was to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the "discovery" of the New World. In this case, it's intent was to celebrate the conquest of New Mexico.

Edit: I understand that it's a very fine line to draw but I think that distinction matters. Besides, I doubt there was very much controversy when the Columbus statue was put up, but there certainly was in the case of Onate in New Mexico where there is still a large Native American population. People actively protested it being erected, which helps draw that distinction.

OK, I'm going to re-hash some old grits over something that is stuck in my mind.

The strangler/killer cop when kneeliyon Mr. Floyds neck keeping his hand in his pants pocket.  Seems to me that wasn't just happenstance or coincidence.  Was he somehow pushing down on his thigh to apply more pressure, bracing himself somehow so he would be more stable while pinning Mr. Floyd?  It just seemed odd and there must be some nefarious reason that was done.

Thoughts? Any expert fighters on the Surl?

Possibly. I've also heard (maybe pseudo-psychology but in the body language interpretation world) that keeping your hand in your pocket can signal that subconsciously you're showing a lack of confidence, trying to conceal something internally, or are being defensive.

If you have people just going to destroy public property, but with no community support, I'd figure some of the community will go defend it if cops aren't.

I don't think the bolded is really a valid concern. The decision to put up the sculpture in the late 1990s was apparently quite controversial and has been remsined divisive ever since. Even the artist who was commissioned to create it has asked for it to be taken down.

What’s the active cases in Texas look like, also the positive testing rate? I look at those more than just daily cases to get a clear picture of what’s going on. If those things are declining or staying put in Texas, then you’re still looking good.

Unfortunately, Texas isn't doing too well. Active cases have increased from roughly 21,000 on June 1 to about 33,000 right now. Positive testing rate as been stuck within a range of around 8.5% since the middle of May, but it appears as if it's been slightly trending upward (almost imperceptibly) but consistently in the last week though by no means skyrocketing so better on that side of the equation.

The big increase in hospitalizations from about 1,500 to 2,500 over the last couple weeks, and the NYTimes "hot spot" map shows that it has been rebounding back to the metros (especially suburban counties) over the last week or so with a couple of rural prison counties thrown into the mix (some of those seem to be cooling).

Overall, I'd say it's not out of control in Texas but is concerning that our effort at "flattening the curve" stalled out, and things are back on the rise. My hope is that we at least plateau and it doesn't continue to go up. We shall see.

I'm saying that it isn't just a statue to people. This dude wanted to"protect" it

Well, yeah, clearly. While I can understand the vast majority of Americans wanting to protect the Lincoln Memorial from an angry mob, what would be this guy and his militia buddies' motivations for protecting this particular statue?

I mean, I can understand the overarching impulse to stand up for "law and order" in opposition to defacing public property and, honestly, I do get a bit of a Chinese Communist "Cultural Revolution" or 18th Century "French Revolution" vibe to these scenes of statues being torn down.

That said, the vast majority that I've seen be torn down absolutely have been statues that celebrate individuals who represented awful evil shit, so I'm not going to go out of my way to join up with a bunch of fake army cosplaying dorks to defend them unless I'm a true believer in what they symbolize.

    Understand what I'm getting at?

The more I think about this, the more it doesn't add up. The maintenance window for network changes is usually the middle off the night with the least amount of traffic. That way if you bork something, not many people know about it. The outage started in the middle of the day. No way they were making a network change. Something catastrophically broke.

Re the Sprint network, I wondered how TMO is going to integrate Sprint into the TMO network. The BIG issue is that Sprint legacy network is CDMA and TMO's is GSM. Next Gen stuff is all IP based so that doesn't present as big of an issue. Sprint's CDMA network coverage is critical for the rural coverage. 4G is usually only in major metro areas and even there CDMA is required to cover dead spots. Sprint simply has not had the capital for 15+ years to expand their 4G coverage beyond major metro areas. My thinking of the shitty coverage is TMO maybe slowly killing the CDMA towers to where you are only on 4G which has a more limited coverage.

There does appear to be a time of day factor in play with my service issues over the last week (other than Sunday/Monday) come to think of it. The actually periodic outages seem to start at night around 11pm onward and then are still present in the morning until 8am, so maybe that's what is going on.

  11. My data is still intermittently cutting out or slowing to a crawl. I'm technically on Sprint (integrating with Tmobile) and haven't had any issues until last week when this started up. The real shitshow on service started on Sunday but ground to a halt Monday afternoon. ymmv

I guess most people would be mad if the Lincoln memorial was torn down.

Did you just compare that statue of a Spanish conquistador who literally enslaved a group of people, ordered that all men from that group over the age of 25 to have a foot chopped off, was ordered to be exiled from New Mexico, and finally was prosecuted by the Spanish government for "excessive force" to the Lincoln Memorial?

Totally agree....the 3 houses to the north of me all just started flying the flag in the last two to three months, and it doesn't give me that prideful feeling. It's amazing that fatass has even polarized our flag. I know he's devisive, but the flag?

To be fair, I first started getting that gut reaction during the build up to Gulf War 2.0 when anyone who was opposed to the invasion was asked "Why do you hate America?" and patriotism was basically weaponized against us.

  14. They reportedly fought and killed each other with rocks and wooden clubs according to a report I heard earlier on NPR. That must've been one hellacious and gruesome fight.

you have got to be the most tone deaf doctor I've ever "interacted" with.  My younger brother got COVID from his first trip to a bar.  31 years old and in great shape.  Another bartender I know, 26 years old and got COVID.  No previous conditions and in good shape but is still in the hospital and will probably be for the foreseeable future as his lungs are permanently damaged.  I currently know 3 other people not counting those 2 I mentioned that are in their mid 20s and all 3 tested positive after their one trip to the same bar.  Thankfully I know for a fact you're not my doctor because my doc is from Monterrey and gives me a sense of relief but damn do I feel for your patients if thats the type of advice you give.

I'm wholly unconvinced GR is an actual physician and, as a matter of fact, I don't think he's ever claimed that he is. So far as I know, he's only stated that he works in a hospital in the San Antonio area. What I find interesting is that he's never fully clarified his role in healthcare when others on the board make that assumption. My bet is that he actually works in administration, given that he appears to have all the time in the world to post throughout the day as if he were just sitting at a desk.

@GRHornDo you mind clearing this up for us? Are you actually a doctor? And, if so, what is your specialty? Mind you, I'm not at all interested in doxing you.

Any update on the militia shooting? Is that guy in custody for shooting a protester?

NPR story says he's been taken into custody. Here's probably the best video of what happened:

Tweeter says the man was trying to defend himself. Others in the thread argue the man was being violent before the incident. Here's video of that apparently happening.

I can't find it now, but there's a comment somewhere in there about him stating his dad works for the sheriff's office. Lots to unpack here.

I'm probably guilty of using the same type of language. But if you truly believe that the language we use on this board has outsized influence and can, not only, alter the perceptions of Trump in the wider world (as expressed above) but also those of our beloved university (as stated elsewhere on this board in reference to race/ethnicity), then maybe we should use our vivid imaginations and mastery of language to produce more florid insults for cutting Trump to the bone.

Having just said that, I immediately see the flaw in my logic and admit that neither the motherfucking mushbrained cunt nor his drooling regarded fans would get goddamned point. En bref, I concede the logic in your analysis but also request your attention to the concerns of our fairer sex who also frequent this shitty cesspool.

You clearly didn't read my second paragraph before going on your rant, which was even more impassioned than the one I went on with you a couple of years ago when you advocated for the sale of valuable Texas School for Deaf property where my daughter was receiving her education at the time. Moreover, the argument I was making in the first paragraph aligns pretty well with yours against using racist language about putting our university in a bad light on this board regarding misogyny. In fact, I thought the two coupled together were rather clever and "pithy" to use your language.

    Gottdam

y’all are acting like you hit your heads on the dashboard.... so to speak.

I actually did, twice, really hard.

Once when I was about five when my family was driving to my grandparents' place at night on a dark caliche road and a deer lept in front of the car and my dad stomped on the brakes back in the 70s. The other was when a friend and I were taking a back road through Sinton to get to Rockport for Spring Break in 1986 and some drunk farmer pulled out in front of us causing our car to t-bone his truck.

In both cases, I was not wearing a seat belt which, like masks, can save a fucking life.
