  1. I checked out the data from the Texas DHS; every year they publish some vaccine stats with respect to public and accredited private schools. While this omits the homeschoolers, etc it does provide a snapshot into how things are going. For kindergarten the MMR vaccine is at 94.20%, which is lower than public health officials would like to see I'm sure. It's not dire, but it's not great. I cannot recall the cutoff percentage for when the vaccine loses its ability to protect the vulnerable in the population. On the DHS website you can download a doc that lists the coverage percentage of kindergarten students by county. Some counties are at 100%, while others are below 90% (I'm only referring to the MMR, other vaccines are listed as well). Travis County is at 90.37%. Austin ISD specifically is at 87.69%. Austin Waldorf is 75%. Polk County is at 65.03%. (Included so one can see how stark the range is). Polk County has around 50,000 residents, no idea how many children in kindergarten there. Some of the very rural counties where the population is low have low percentages as well. While the risk of contamination and spread may seem remote, so is access to medical care, so there is that. It's a mixed bag where you can see pockets of low rates that might be affected if an infected individual gets among the group. Some charter schools with which I'm familiar were missing from the list and I'm not sure if that means the campus had too few kindergartners to turn in a report or if they've somehow slipped through the cracks.
  2. No, not Trump supporters--people that belong to the cult are not going to sway away from that. The last election was close enough that galvanizing people away from Trump continues to be paramount. He's going to get the nom I'm all but betting so in the battle of the olds, much much better if it's Biden.
  3. Fair. The longer she stays in the race, the more he'll keep needling though.
  4. Trump did not even want the US to be in the UN so it was a ghost appointment. Checkmate, lib! (Narrator's note: most MAGA don't know what the UN is or its purpose) Calling a female 'birdbrain' is a risky strategy IMO. Obviously it will appeal to certain demos, but could backfire.
  5. Governor Cox of Utah: "This is not a partisan issue."
  6. He'll get to it after he fixes the abysmal state of the foster care system....oh wait.
  7. I disagree with @atomheartbevo that this action by Abbott is wholly performative. It is performative, no argument there, but it is also a very good trial run to test just how state and federal military will react during a coup; a real coup that doesn't just use cos play cult crazies. If you think I'm being too Ledgey, no one except those cult crazies has suffered any punishment whatsoever. All of the GOP congresspersons, senators, planners (Roger Stone, Ali Alexander, Nick Fuentes, Michael Flynn, et al), donors, and such are still more than willing to keep trying. The leadup to January 6th was filled with stumping by Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, etc because of the January 5th Georgia Senate run-off between Loeffler and Warnock and the "Stop the Steal" campaign that began in November, 2020 was fully ramped up by then and all over social media, parroted by GOP reps (who then scrubbed their accounts). This drumbeat that Abbott began is going to keep pounding until something happens, and the GOP wants something to happen. Dangerous times right now.
  8. Reduced numbers of medical students selecting the OB-Gyn specialty is going to be a tough reckoning nationwide, but hey, as long as a guy can get his ED pills and such, I guess nothing else matters. Some men (and women) forget that there is more to womens' healthcare than just birthing babies. The states (besides Idaho) that decide not to keep too close an eye on maternal mortality may be the lead indicator (that a situation is worsening), but overall life expectancy (for women) may worsen in general. Over 80% of women who seek gynecological care are between 18-45, but gynecologists diagnose and treat other issues with female reproductive organs.
  9. The 'woke' argument is exactly as you say--it's the knee-jerk comment that ignores what was SI's inability to spot the leak that was sinking the ship. I remember being a young reader and the advertising that my parents talked about some (IIRC, it was in the news)--the Bud Light dog (I think?) and the Joe Camel ads...and the long spreads each season with the run down on the teams (football, basketball, baseball, hockey) but with the internet and message boards and then social media, that just subsumed their relevance in that respect and their revenue.
  10. Have either of you happened to read this book?
  11. I rather like this typo-created accidentally coined word. Rather striking image of a corpulent red-faced bellicose man being thrown and towed by the collar to jail. Too bad he was sanctioned instead.
  12. He may well go the way of Walker as was mentioned, but he seems like a vengeful man at heart and not unlike Stephen Miller in his ability to regroup and try something else for awhile. Both Walker and Miller are involved with the Young America Foundation and as you know, Miller launched the America First Legal Foundation. None of the three are all that old, so they'll be around for awhile.
  13. The mens' team has three 800m athletes with top ten indoor times right now, so if that holds, then your comment regarding the mids quality is spot on. NAU has some studs in the mile on up, but that's kinda their specialty.
  14. Obligatory: "you're"
  15. Happy birthday (belated), Penelope. Pics are fantastic and just wow at the whole experience. I am jealous but in a good way and so happy you were able to go and do so many things. Thanks for sharing your journey with us; it's very inspiring! I almost fell out of my chair at some of those food pics. The spring rolls looked so so good.
  16. I second Glencoe as well. It's well worth the visit. Actually, on your drive to Skye, some time spent near The Trossachs National Park/Loch Lomond would be another nature hiking (combined with historical and touristy spots) opportunity. I had mentioned Cairngorms because it's more north (and not too out of your way if you're driving back south from Orkney. Both are beautiful areas.
  17. We're all going to die and that's a fact. Rose Castorini: I just want you to know no matter what you do, you're gonna die, just like everybody else. Cosmo Castorini: Thank you, Rose.
  18. The guy who tweeted is running against Cuellar in this year's election. His treasurer is based in DC, but he's only just filed his PAC forms in the last month or so. He's a retired vet I believe.
  19. It's not being offended about the mRNA vaccine; it's being annoyed at someone coyly dropping into the pop decline thread with a tweet and an agenda about vaccines trying to start a 'just asking questions' discussion. Feel free to go all in in the vaccine thread but it's not relevant here. Cancer upswing, perhaps, but again that might still be better served in another thread. The migrant flows you mention is fascinating (to me). Where cultures butt up against each other, there can be a beautiful blending of thoughts and ideas (in a positive direction) but whew boy can it go south when folks get uncomfortable (sort of Maslow-y is my reference here). If one 'feels,' however true it is or not, that one's needs are not going to be met then the angsty angry groups coalesce around some pretty nasty actions. Our overall world population (as noted for pages and pages prior) is increasing, albeit at a slower rate than previous decades; but it is still on the upswing. Individual countries that go with positive changes for well-being of the young (and caring for them), and welcoming immigrants and assimilating them into a country's overall culture IMO might weather the transition better than the countries that opt for major human rights violations for the masses, or for oppressed demographics, etc. But we're human and we make a lot of mistakes and do some pretty terrible things to one another. Good luck to us.
  20. Of course health officials "pushed" the vaccine. The vaccine kept many many people from having much worse outcomes, exactly as it was designed to do. To make matters worse, I'm quite thrilled about some of the mRNA research as it may well help people who've had cancers like mine, living much longer than expected. But going back to the wee little chart, I would suggest that instead of using a chart that is being promoted by two anti-vaccine groups, perhaps consider that the ACS is the more reliable source. The US Disabilities Project graph above being touted by Phinance Technologies is not something I am willing to give a lot of credence to at this point in time. I mean sure, the three people on the team have PhDs (Physics, Finance, and an MSc in Math) while the third fellow uses his credentials as a Wall Street analyst to assuage any doubt that he is just asking questions but guess what? We have multiple PhDs in STEM fields in our family too and none of us would care to opine on data in this manner nor attempt to convince people through a website run by a global macro alternative investment firm, even if they state that this is a humanitarian project and oh by the way please donate to our cause. Seems sketchy but you do you, man of the arena.
  21. I am aware to what the Axios tweet stated. However, I went to the source that they used, the American Cancer Society report that the Society compiles each year and it is way more nuanced than what Axios tweeted and to imply the COVID vaccine is a potential contributor is using very fuzzy logic at best. Here is the ACS report. I believe I linked it earlier but repetition is our friend isn't it: https://acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.3322/caac.21820 If you read this report in its entirety, you may find that your fears are somewhat assuaged. It does talk about health outcomes due to delays in diagnosis for malignant cancers because of health interruptions caused by restrictions to well-checks etc.
  22. Every time someone on here uses the word crypto-bros I cannot help but picture the three guys from The Menu. Those actors nailed their characters perfectly.
  23. In addition, perhaps the word or another word and the look (hands placed on hips) you're searching for is Tone. Hard to read in text sometimes, and I like to give people the benny of the doubty most times. Sometimes one finds that disengaging can be difficult but that feeling really does go away after awhile. (Um, yeah, phrasing) Or surly humor can break the mood. But sometimes it's too soon.
