  1. I'm showing the NW Austin rain report (from the prev page) at a little over two inches for the period of Sun-Sat, so the shrinkage continues....
  2. Apologies to @mchookem and your heartfelt initial thread post.
  3. Explain what you mean, please?
  4. Returning to the front page of this thread, IMO (opinion!) that is the essence of it and what led to the kerfluffle that lasted for the last five or so pages. Set aside the media 'read all about its' and talk about accountability if one wants to have a real discussion about the governor of Texas ordering two state agencies to assume control of about 2.5 miles of border along with a municipal park (containing the water access via boat ramp) as part of its $2 billion per year cost (*estimated--actual expenditure from just prior to April 2022 was $2.5 million per week). For example, Texas has been arresting immigrants and charging them with various crimes such as trespassing long prior to the passage of SB4. Those arrested are jailed, thus the State must assume responsibility for them. Should anything happen to someone while being held, the State must be held accountable (I barely kept a straight face while typing that). IMO, (opinion!) the attempts to enter the US via the border is a murky area somewhat when the State gets involved because now you've got two countries plus federal and state agencies and so on--which you all likely know but bears repeating so accountability changes from a solid line (USBP) to a spotty dotted one. And a river runs through it. Sigh. The whole situation begs for reform of some kind through a beneficial cooperation with the countries to our south with visa and worker programs, and paths to citizenship that don't involve living in squalor camping along the river waiting for the opportunity to drown. IMO (opinion!), the State of Texas leadership prefers the punitive stick but our Country has always been about the carrot. I'd be willing to discuss which approach yields more beneficial and long lasting results. Without name calling even. Or negs. Or toxic slime, whatever that is. *Texas Legislative Budget Board appropriations data supplied by ProPublica
  5. Mea culpa on that one. I'm blaming the second martini. The original tweet posted by Denton Cooley is from Axios and they just pulled a little bit of info. If you're interested in a much more detailed report, the stats I was using in my post came from here: https://acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.3322/caac.21820 which is where the Axios article got their data as well. It's from the American Cancer Society. The will have mortality rates and more. It's where I was reading about the HPV vaccine and the lower cervical cancer rates among women of certain age groups. Cervical cancer is still a concern for women and is slightly higher in the older age groups (prior to vaccine availability) In addition, one of the cancer types that was increasing among younger people (age <50) was colorectal cancer.
  6. You've already got the Isle of Skye, etc but two other things if you've not done them: 1. Book tickets to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It's held in August and to go one would want to book it early to get the dates. Just a lot of fun and it's held at the castle. Unless of course you don't appreciate pipes and drums in which case you're crap. 2. Cairngorms National Park. Very pretty area for hiking/walking/camping and nature and there are several other parks/forests right there plus if you're into tourist attractions of various types (distilleries, historical sites, Balmoral Castle, etc) there's that too and then you quickly take the highway back to Edinburgh or Glasgow. (there's a train but not as convenient for you). It's not all that far from Skye and it's been awhile so I can't give you much on nicer meals, etc. We were walking so tended to grab stuff from the Tesco and picnic as we went.
  7. George Soros (at 93 years) needs to have John Wick on retainer to pick up his mantle because he's attained some Baba Yaga level mythology amongst the GOP. Also: Paxton will never pay a dime. He's a crook but he's a damn wily crook and knows he will never pay a dime.
  8. I got you fam. All you need to know:
  9. You ever wonder if Gaetz wakes up and after showering, looks in the bathroom mirror and has a moment of self-awareness? Like just a teeny inkling of his own utterances and thoughts? Yeah, it passes pretty quickly doesn't it; I don't wonder much about it any more.
  10. Spitballing, but having food desserts for fresh vegetables, fruits, and non-processed consumables doesn't help. The pushback against health reforms by certain lobby groups may also be less than ideal. Access to regular monitoring of health through well-checks, etc is important. As noted above, environmental impacts from air, water, sun exposure, etc may have effects. So many variables. One positive from that data was the cervical cancer rates in females is dropping, and it seems to be due to the HPV vaccine as it is carried forward into the older age groups each year. The data showed that as of 2022, 76% of teens had received at least one dose and 63% were up-to-date. But overall, Americans could stand to eat healthier and have access to clean water and regular medical care. Another item that the ACS data discusses is that Texas, with a higher number of uninsured population (17%) has a higher mortality rate and lower life expectancy as compared to states (Massachusetts for example at 2%) with lower numbers of uninsured. To compare states of similar population numbers, California has a mortality rate of 156.3 while Texas has 172. Florida, home of the retirees and sun worshipers has a mortality rate of 165.3, essentially between them. (Those numbers were for males btw).
  11. I think he could tell by my face because the thought of Elon naked is:
  12. It's sitting at a little over two and a half inches now, so I'll be lucky if it hits my mark. Shoulda gone with the lower one like I thought.
  13. One to watch, she's on fire. She's not kidding about syphillis, either. Real trouble looming with that one. With access to healthcare an issue, specifically for women, and furthermore lack of access to OB/GYN care it's happening while there is a shortage of treatment medications (the FDA is allowing importation of meds from overseas to alleviate this). There is only one drug that can safely treat in utero IIRC. Guys, do your part: wear a condom. Oral contraceptives are only one factor that play into sexual health and reproduction.
  14. Here's a little more about this case: https://okcfox.com/news/local/blackwell-police-arrest-pastor-wife-on-child-abuse-kidnapping-charges-8-children-beaten-with-wooden-board-locked-in-room-no-food-keith-holt-candy-holt-pastor-house-of-prayer-church-blackwell The church had a facebook post saying that Holt was not the senior pastor (they did not comment to the reporter for the article) but they also did not say if he or his wife were employed by the church in any capacity.
  15. Fuentes has been a white supremacist since high school. Most of them flame out like Richard Spencer did because American society was hell to the naw on fascism and overt racism. But now with a platform and a mic, Nick is gloating at his good fortune to be a bellwether for authoritarianism.
  16. What is the deal with Idaho? It's so pretty there....but they've got some really really odd people.
  17. I noticed this, and it got lost in the shuffle a page back I think but the DPS has been arresting, detaining, and charging migrants with criminal trespass. I do not know if that began with the takeover of Shelby Park or further details, however. Prior to the governor's maneuver, there were the various usual actions taken by BP. People may have forgotten that the US has reverted to Title 8 for immigration processing (see below) now that the pandemic is over. The Coast Guard essentially does the same with migrants that arrive in Florida via watercraft (IIRC) if the watercraft cannot be turned away safely. Just because a migrant is received by the BP at river's edge does not mean that the migrant will remain in the US. Title 8: Individuals who unlawfully cross the U.S. Southwest border: will generally be processed under Title 8 expedited removal authorities in a matter of days will be barred from reentry to the United States for at least five years if ordered removed; and would be presumed ineligible for asylum under the proposed Circumvention of Lawful Pathways regulation, absent an applicable exception.
  18. Aw fuck it. As @royiv pointed out several pages back, this thread has turned to shit so another derail matters not. Here goes... When you posted the first of your ~20 responses in this thread, I read the screenshot (The Right Scoop) along with the National Review article and refrained from comment. I had seen the earlier tweets and had commented on a previous page that this initial border action by the governor seemed like a performative stunt more than a willingness to work alongside others to assist various agencies with immigration. That is with the complete understanding that agencies often don't play nicely with each other. Egos. However, you went on to post the court summary ( @TwiceHorn or any of the other legal types know what it's called) and so I read that and then posted a response, pointing out one or two items that were omitted from the media. This was followed with some back and forth between posters, comments regarding tax liability as it relates to immigration, more back and forth about which political parties bear more responsibility for reform, more back and forth including the word "slimy" being used in reference to CR demeanor, more stupid shit and finally this last piece. I will point out, that at no time did I ever call you a name or state that your intelligence is lacking. I did, upon reading the dig about wanting to ruffle feathers, remark on the disingenuous nature of your initial post. Which leads me to this point. Despite no name calling nor neg reps given, at no time did you ever engage with me when I addressed your comment with civility and a statement of fact as elicited by the information YOU provided. YOU are not required to respond to posters who insult you, name call you, and lord knows, I have enough people on here that I ignore w/o using the feature but you chose to do so with them. I essentially gave you an out and you ignored it because actually discussing this issue sans emotion did not seem to interest you all that much. Despite imagining my own children being torn from my arms and swept under the current to die, I was willing and wondering if you were going to discuss to what end Abbott's decision was supposed to be. I find it almost but not quite amusing that a (stereotypical) male response to place women in a catch 22 is to call them "too emotional" to be rational but call them frigid and cold-hearted when they posit thoughts with little emotion. So if you were accusing CR posters of being emotional, well, look in the mirror. I do, however, possess a pitchfork but it is relegated to the garden shed where garden tools such as it should be. This thread is the zero sum game microcosm of the zero sum game being played and it would be nice, for once, if players would consider trying the non-zero-sum, aka positive-sum/win-win game but I am not optimistic. Sucks to our ass-mar. Lord Of The Flies it is then.
  19. Man, I don't know. It's a long way from persuading the nation's police forces not to kill minorities to forgoing lower taxes to have resources that help urban families with addictions and mental illness. I do actually know this. But I like to repeat it sometimes. /s
  20. Amy Coney Barrett is 51 years old and Brett and Neil not much older. So much fun to come let me tell you.
  21. Maybe add Fetterman to that list and make sure he understands to invade Johnson's personal space bubble while they're all talking.
  22. Huh, how about that. Kinda like a buncha 60+ year old white guys telling a woman how her ectopic pregnancy is no big deal or if she clinches her thighs together she can repress her menstrual blood and other nonsense they haven't the slightest clue upon.
