the academy's appeal to watch movies in theaters
boilerhorn replied to Hagbard Celine's topic in Movies and TV
Agree re: Minecraft - and all of the reboots we are getting. There definitely is a communal aspect of those, and I participated in it at Minecraft w/ my son. Sinners was also previewed at Minecraft and it is on my list of "to see" movies. Sinners cost around $90mm to make. A couple of good weekends in the theater followed by decent distribution deals should allow them to recuperate their costs or make significant profit. "The model is what will support actual film making" - certainly, but the market has changed. Film studios have adapted, but the film makers are worried, so they are playing the nostalgic "every movie was better at the theater when we were growing up" theme. It will be more difficult to green-light a higher-cost arty/quirky film going forward. However, I see your point that a high-profit reboot can help subsidize the arty drama films. Apple, Netflix, Amazon, and to a lesser extent HBO/Max are streamers with money. Most full-length films that get released directly to streaming are films that the studios passed on. So, most feature films are being vetted by the studios before they get to streaming. Most high quality content on streaming is in miniseries or series form. I realize I may seem to be arguing against my own point, but the consumer now has the option of paying $15 per ticket today to see something on the big screen or wait 6-12 months to see it on their high quality home theater. 20 years ago, the latter option was 12-24 months (if at all) on a 26"-32" tube TV. -
She's pissed that he allegedly ignored her "no" and violated her. She's pissed that he allegedly blamed alcohol for his behavior. She's pissed that he allegedly wanted her to sign an NDA. She's pissed that he allegedly offered to pay her off. She's pissed about how he allegedly treated her.

the academy's appeal to watch movies in theaters
boilerhorn replied to Hagbard Celine's topic in Movies and TV
Rehashing a bit and dovetailing on a couple of other posts... In his acceptance speech for directing Anora, Sean Baker says (some paraphrased), "Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater. Watching with an audience is an experience. Communal experience you do not get at home. Movie theaters are a vital part of our culture. We want to make films for the big screen. Distributors, focus on the big screen." etc. As noted, there is a nostalgic aspect to seeing a movie in the theaters. And, in some cases, the experience can be better - especially for some action movies... The academy are pining for the resurgence of an old, outdated model. In that model, the largest home TV was a 32", 100+ lb standard definition CRT that cost over $800 when released. In that model, you could only see movies around 6-12 months after release - best case. They controlled the distribution; they controlled what was released; etc. Today, you can get a decent 65" hi-def panel for as low as $350 - and it can provide for all of your entertainment needs: sports, remnants of network TV, streaming, etc. You can choose when you get to consume the media and with whom. And, you can turn off a shitty movie without the regret of losing $50+ for the experience. The business model is evolving and the academy is trying to play on our heartstrings to go see movies in the theater. I get the nostalgia. I fell in love with driving and my first car was a 1970s era Honda Civic. No part of me wants to relive driving that car. I want the experience to evolve. That said, it does appear that the movie distributors know what will put butts in theater seats. Previews I saw at a recent movie: another Jurassic Park; another Mission Impossible; another Superman; another MCU movie; another Karate Kid variant; another Pixar movie (Elio), another Smurfs. Everything is leveraging an existing franchise; most are action oriented. Each of those play on nostalgia, but a different nostalgia than the "communal experience" which can really stink if you are attending with the wrong commune. -

So excited to go to the SEC with these Tennessee assholes
boilerhorn replied to TexasEd's topic in Football
This - don't care if Heupel's Sooner, fat, 1-1 against Texas, illiterate or whatever. Immaleave is not bigger than the program. That said, he'd be perfect at OU or Texas A&M. -

boilerhorn replied to TexasEd's topic in Football
Their fanbase is dumber than we thought. Their defense, esp. DL, was fantastic. Here's the Opponent Adjusted OFEI and DFEI for teams that made the playoffs last year. Nico was not the reason Tenn was there. -
I'll admit to being naive about Iamaleava's mediocrity until today. He was a press darling early in the season last year, esp. after the TD pass that put Tennessee up over Bama in mid October. Against good defenses, he kinda sucked. And I actually hypothesized that he was lured into this by tOSU or Oregon, but @closetojumping properly set the record straight. He's (below?) average and should have worked on his craft and deposited large checks.

Yeah - my comments about Cook being poor in one post and trickle down in another post was conflicting. He was definitely trickling up To further take this thread off topic, a friend of mine who did a lot of volunteer work with people across the wealth spectrum would say, "Poor people spend money; middle class people manage money; rich people invest money."

Good point. I never took you for a supply-sider

Honestly, I am surprised more of these guys don't act like selfish idiotic lunatics in similar circumstances. At 18, he just had $1mm dropped in his lap. He's never seen cash like that, and it reinforces his belief that he's God's gift to football. His work ethic slides, and his production slides. He gets less playing time because he's inferior and now unreliable. He freaks out, and blames everyone except himself. 3 months ago, Cook was on a path to being a career criminal with zero self-awareness or respect for others. That path has taken a turn and it looks like he's on a positive path. Great! He now appears to be on a path to being a productive member of society - or at least off the criminal malcontent path. Perhaps sitting in a FW jail helped. Yes, he lit $1mm of booster money on fire; that's part of the risk of funding NIL, and I suspect it stings. He has zero chance of returning to Texas and lighting another pile of Texas booster money on fire. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. In similar selfish-jackwagon news, Nico Iamaleava wants to renegotiate his NIL deal - just 5 days before the spring portal opens. I see Nico landing in Oregon or at tOSU.

Trev Alberts is still the biggest dumbfuck around.
boilerhorn replied to Fondren & Main's topic in Football
The conventional wisdom, rumors, or whatever was that Alberts was brought on board with a primary goal of cutting costs. He is serving in is 2nd year of a 5-year, $11mm totally guaranteed contract. For many people, that would be "if I can survive 5 years, I can either go to bigger and better things - or retire." Perhaps that's where he is. The outcome of cost cutting remains to be seen, as 2024 saw the largest expenditures in Texas A&M athletics department history: $243.7 million at 25% increase over 2023. Only 60% or so of that increase was the payment to Jimbo. It's a lot more difficult these days to find the data (5 years ago, it was the first or 2nd hit when doing a google search). Here's what I was able to deduce from and article on 247. I found revenue summaries from FY22-FY24 on The Eagle (behind paywall) -
Markets still falling like whoa
boilerhorn replied to Llano Estacado's topic in Business and Markets
Funny headline this AM: Stocks plummet as tariff-pause euphoria gets reality check Reality check = people realizing this shit will happen again in 3 months and do not want to deal with the volatility. Retirees moving $$ to safer havens. People moving the Jr/Sr in HS college funds into cash, etc. Just my opinion, worth what you paid. -
This is how tariffs are fucking Russia over.

Not a patent attorney; have many patents; worked at a company that filed 100s. What @jimmyjazz said and what @TwiceHorn said is my understanding - of course, Twice is correct, as he's an attorney. IMO, the only way to extract some cash from this is to say that you are available to review and sign the document for $300 (or more) per hour, minimum 2 (or more) hours. You need to review what you are signing, etc.

Agree. That said, it is even more amazing that he amassed that many goals with scores like Messier, Kurri, Nicholls, LaFontaine, McTavish, Robataille, etc. with him. Gretzky's goals per year dropped notably when he left Edmonton, but he remained as prolific in getting his teammates involved. And, the focus on defense increased dramatically in the early 2000s to present. Ovechkin had the likes of Backstrom, Semin, and Kuznetov with him over the years, but none of those guys are household names like the ones Gretzky got to collaborate with. Also - Ovechkin has a lifetime +/- of 63, or 3 per 82 game season. Gretzky was 520; 29 per 82 game season.
-
FWIW, Gretzky had 1963 assists. Ovechkin has 724. Nsiap.

who would you rather have at his peak: kobe or kawhi?
boilerhorn replied to Derka's topic in Basketball
For me, it is really simple. If I was playing a game of 2-on-2 where the outcome had significant impact for me and my teammate, who would I choose as my teammate if I had the first choice? It would be close, but it would be Kobe, MJ, then Bird. Each of these folks wanted to destroy their competition. If I chose Kobe (or MJ), I knew that he'd ignore me if the game was on the line. Up 10, pass to boilerhorn and see what happens. Close or down, f- boilerhorn, we need to win. I do not give a shit about the stats. If you want to win, you choose Kobe then MJ. Kahwi is not in my top-10. -
I agree with the take from @Rimbo Had the day off from work, so I went with my youngest, who is a so-so gamer and was a fan of MineCraft. Plus, he's my "go to" for movies that are likely to be action/adventure with low expectations for acting, writing, etc. The great part about Jack Black - he does not really take himself seriously, while appearing to do so. Momoa was also quite good. He actually pulls of the comedy side quite well. it was a great experience for us. We both laughed out loud at things together; chuckled at things; said "WTH" at the same things. It was entertainment. And it was fun. I was not expecting any academy award performances, etc. It was a different form of art and it was worth my the $20 I spent for tickets. My only complaint surrounded Jennifer Coolidge's role in the movie. She's basically played the banal blonde female in every movie since American Pie. She does the same here, but it is discontinuous. I like her as an actress and in her normal role, but it seemed forced. That said, who carees? I, too, will watch again.

These guys must have just looked at this chart on wikipedia under United States Balance of Trade And concluded.... TARIFFS! NSIAP
-
Guy's fucking delusional. Just 3 days after tariffs are imposed, $5T in factory manufacturing is committed. Ok. Yeah. Right.
-
Of course. My bad.
-
Does this set up Cambodia, Vietnam, etc. economies to crash so they go open handed to Uncle Joe Vladimir? These countries finally have reasonably functional market economies and are going to be crushed by this capricious behavior.
-
It will be difficult to leave the politics out of it, as you've observed, as this policy has been largely one-sided, if not from a single person. At the end of the day, the tariffs are being imposed, seemingly at random, by a person who does not appear to have a middle school understanding of economics and history. He just uses a bludgeon, which is common for a primate with a primitive mind. 2 good examples: (1) applying tariffs EVERYWHERE, even on uninhabited islands and (2) elasticity constants that are integers.

Annual buttfucking with no lube, 2025 Appraisals
boilerhorn replied to crash_davis's topic in Daily Texan
It would be great if the CAD/state/taxing entity was compelled to pay 95% of appraised value to purchase your property at the homeowners choosing. If the appraised value was accurate, they’d break even after paying 5% realtor fees to sell it to an actual buyer. CAD figured it out…. They’d rather than have us flail at appeals when talking to functional morons at the hearing. And they’ll just say “no”
