  1. Who leaves the SEC first when "Mean Old Texas" adds a reading requirement?
  2. If I went to Yale, I would not give a shit about Auburn or SEC. I probably would not follow football either . Well, that's probably not true, as I grew up in Austin and followed the horns then.
  3. NCAA Tourney records at Texas: Shaka: 0-3 Beard: 1-1 Terry: 4-1 Survive and advance. [And don't comingle with crazy]
  4. Yale got to meet their drivers, landscapers, and bank tellers.
  5. Could also be that his bank account is full enough.
  6. Part of his calculus was "reasonable driving distance to an international airport." For business trips, he says it presently is faster/cheaper to hire a driver to take him from Tyler to DFW than to fly from Tyler to DFW. He and his wife love it. His kid is excelling in school there, too.
  7. For myriad reasons, a buddy of mine moved from Austin to Tyler in 2023. I think he waters his lawn daily and has a monthly water bill of around $0.63. Of course I exaggerate, but the water is cheap and plentiful there. Also has a fairly strong healthcare infrastructure.
  8. And you are an OSU fan. Ans you ostensibly went to OSU
  9. Surveying the Travis and nearby data for MMD is interesting. I bolded anything under 90%. I am honestly surprised at how low - especially for a large ISD - Austin is. It would be interesting to see a breakout by school. Some highlights: Austin Waldorf: 75% Austin ISD: 87.7% Austin Montessori: 100% Del Valle ISD: 94% Dripping Springs ISD: 95.6% Eanes: 96.6% Hill Country Christian: 96.4% Lake Travis ISD: 92.4% Manor ISD: 96.5% Pflugerville ISD: 99.9% Regents School of Austin: 85% Round Rock ISD: 96.1% St Andrews: 100% Texas Empowerment Academy: 54.8% UT Austin Charter School: 86% Veritas Academy: 62%
  10. Barkely has had 2 complete seasons ever - his rookie campaign and in 2022. He has nearly 1500 career NFL touches, so he *may* have another 2-3 decent years left in him. When playing, he's one of the best in the NFL and, as noted, a leader in the locker rom. 2/22/15 seems a little high, given his recent tailing production and injury history, as its near the top of the RB salary average (only Kamara, Chubb, McCaffrey, and Jones would make more). But it is not my money and it would only be a 2 year commitment. If he's healthy, why not? Here are his career injuries, fwiw. Aug 13, 2018 Thigh Hamstring Sprain Grade 1 He missed a week with the injury but came back right after. Sep 22, 2019 Pedal Ankle Sprain Grade 2 He suffered this injury in a game against the Buccaneers. Sep 20, 2020 Knee ACL Tear Grade 3 This happened during week 2 and his season ended right there. Sep 20, 2020 Knee MCL Sprain Grade 2 During the same game, he also had an MCL tear along with the ACL tear. Oct 10, 2021 Pedal Ankle Sprain/ Grade 1 Barkley suffered an ankle injury during a game against the Cowboys. Dec 8, 2022 Cervical Neck Stinger He had a stinger in practice but played his way through.
  11. Agree. That was a painful read. I have to hand it to the author, Joel Reese, for being transparent about his role in the entire overdose.
  12. He might be reading the consensus view of next year’s roster - not realizing that shitty D1 basketball players are still pretty good. Note: I used “shitty” for effect, not as a legitimate assessment of next year’s roster. Yet.
  13. Buddy of mine played college ball at SWTSU, now known as Texas State. He asserts that, with a little more weight, he might have gotten an NBA sniff. Perhaps, but what do I know? In our mid-20s, we’d do neighborhood shootarounds at the shitty metal only rims/backboards. I’d miss damn near every shot, because I had zero skill and would occasionally rely on the backboard or rim. I’d say, “wow the rim is not forgiving” and after a swish, he’d retort “because you cannot shoot.” I cannot recall whether he missed a shot…
  14. Beach Boys was the first concert I ever saw. 1981 in the Erwin Center w/ opening act - Randy Meisner. Great show, esp. for a youngster. Pretty sure Brian did not tour with them even then. And only played live on occasion. That said, he was one of the great songwriters of the 20th century.
  15. TJ is there, so we know Brandy did not eat him. Bad joke aside, my oldest went to the “Brandy Perryman Shooting School” almost 20 years ago and, as expected, a less athletic version of BP could still hit every freaking shot.
  16. At least he and/or his wife did not try to open the door of an in-flight plane. This is a pre-coke Herman stunt.
  17. Beienemy seems like an old school coach - one more suited for the 1980s or 1990s variant where intimidation and threats “motivate” players. Until proven otherwise, I see any job he takes as an example of the Peter Principle at work.
  18. If Chris Beard wasn’t such a dipshit, he’d still be the Texas coach.
  19. A little off topic - but related to the VW history topic. When I was an intern at IBM in the late-80s, IBM forged a business relationship w/ Siemens. Part of a Siemens exec's presentation included a history of Siemens. 1933-1945 were left out of the history, unsurprisingly. At Q/A time, one of the IBMers asked, "You seemed to have skipped the slides that showed 1933-1945. Can you please tell us what Siemens did between 1933-1945." You could hear a pin drop and the exec looked aghast. The IBMer's 3rd or 4th line manager had a panicked look on his face. When the Siemens exec turned away to address the next question, the coworker spoke up a little louder, "Excuse me, you did not answer my question. Would you like me to repeat it?" At that point, the boss came over and asked him to pipe down. Undeterred, he insisted... Many of the folks in the audience had friends or family who were directly impacted by the WW2 European theater and they did not care for the whitewashing...
  20. I originally liked the idea of transferring it back to me, thinking, "I could go back to school..." Then I thought, "why the hell would I want to doo that?" The 529 -> Roth transition, though, makes the "transfer back to the funder" choice more palatable.
  21. Interesting. Bigger check most likely. Also, the Raiders are in bit of a worse situation, IMO, despite winning 4 more games than Washington. First, Raiders hired the player favorite head coach. That seldom turns out well. Second, Raiders have a far crappier cap situation. Third, their top players are either old, ineffective, or want out. Last, Raiders have 3 picks in the first 3 rounds and Washington has 6.
  22. Teachers, drivers, cafeteria workers, etc. They are struggling to staff damn near every position - except administrators.
  23. My work PC is a "corporate standard-issue" Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 1. As a laptop, it is kinda crappy. Mediocre keyboard; 1920x1080; etc. Add a decent monitor and it is suitable (not great) as a PC. Need to work remote for a couple of weeks and was curious for a portable - one I can also throw in my backpack - monitor. Wirecutter has some recs: https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-portable-monitor/ Another option is "go buy a good one at BestBuy and return it the day before I leave" but that's unethical, IMO. Thoughts and/or experience here? Getting a good laptop is an option, but my remote work timeline is more immediate.
  24. @South Austin - a couple of thoughts about overfunding a 529. If it is tax-free merit aid, I believe you can remove the same amount (w/o penalties) if the merit aid is tax-free. It can be rolled over to another beneficiary (you or another kid). The SECURE2.0 act allows for up to $35k to be converted, penalty-free, into a Roth IRA. If overfunding occurs, set yourself as beneficiary and then move to a Roth. Worst case, you use it for something else and pay the additional 10% penalty on the gains. In almost all cases, the taxes and penalty on gains of the overfunding will be much smaller than the taxes had you put the money in a traditional brokerage account WITH SIMILAR INVESTMENTS. The traditional brokerage account does give you more freedom, as I suspect you know.
  25. Thank you for posting this. I own zero rental properties, but have been considering it. And your comments confirm my initial investigations. Buying rentals in high-demand locations (Austin, etc.), esp. with high interest rates is going to generate negative ROI. A simple zillow search will show you that meeting the 1% rule is impossible in most of Austin these days. A house for sale for $500k in 78750 has a zillow rent estimate of $2100. And there's one around the corner for rent at $2100. All of those houses sold for $150k in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Right now, we are considering places in the midwest with high potential population growth areas will relatively flat appreciation. Some of those are places that will benefit from CHIPs act dollars (NW Indiana; Indy to Purdue corridor), Columbus, OH, etc. Many of those places appreciated greatly during the low rate and COVID days, as they are decent places to live in the midwest. Housing around college campuses seems interesting, but you either (1) have to have one of your kids occupy it and rent other rooms or (2) get it for dirt cheap and be tolerant of having a significant amount of wear and tear. The "dirt cheap" does not really seem to exist these days unless you want to put another $100k to fix it.
