  1. Awesome. They do not even trust a Sanders-spawn to run for 1/3 yard
  2. Deion was interesting/compelling last year. Now, we all know he's a douche daddy-baller with thin skin. Not sure I know what I want a an outcome. Just good enough for him to survive. Just bad enough to support my anti-Prime academy bias. Lord, hear my prayer.
  3. Pre-Texas/OU SEC (Vandy notwithstanding) are a confederacy of dunces. Texas/OU additions will help, but not enough. And frankly, OU folks are clearly in the top-25%. Sports conference affiliation is no longer about status, intellect, research, geographies, etc. It's about dollars to the athletics departments. The fans we will encounter going forward will be more akin to NFL fans.
  4. Yup. None of the 3/2 ranches in NW austin selling for $500k are garnering $5k/mo rents (using the fairly common 1% rent rule).
  5. It was 59. In fact, some affectionately refer to 59 yards of offense as "1 Watson" in homage to the brilliance of OC Shawn Watson. I was self-loathing enough to go back and remind myself of the game. Texas's only scoring drive was a 44 yard drive that finished with a 9 yard TD run by Swoopes. Even with that run, Swoopes ended the game with -32 yards on 5 rushes. His overall offensive net was 25 yards though, given his 57 passing yards on 13-25 passing (1 INT). If you want to punish yourself further, here's the box score. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Texas_Bowl
  6. As a father with kids, I can assure you that my own kids crying was quite uncomfortable to me, as I knew something was up with the kid. When I am flying and hear kids crying, I immediately sympathize with the parents. It really sucks for them and moreso for the kid. I also thank God for inventing noise canceling headphones. That fucking guy could have saved himself the trauma (ha ha) and the public embarrassment by just planning - buy some cheap noise canceling headphones and no longer allow yourself to be "triggered." What an asshat.
  7. More details on Tan leaving the board are now leaking... https://www.reuters.com/technology/intel-board-member-quit-after-differences-over-chipmakers-revival-plan-2024-08-27/ The former CEO of chip-software company Cadence Design joined Intel’s board two years ago as part of a plan to restore Intel’s place as the leading global chipmaker. The board expanded Tan’s responsibilities in October 2023, authorizing him to oversee manufacturing operations. Over time, Tan grew frustrated by the company’s large workforce, its approach to contract manufacturing and Intel’s risk-averse and bureaucratic culture, according to the sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly.
  8. I am having what appears to be a drain/vent problem in a home that was built in 1930s. In calling a plumber, they are requesting a Hold Harmless agreement in order to do the investigative work. Given the age of the house and the unknown scope, it seems reasonable. However, it also seems it allows for shoddy work. Presumably, I should get another plumber. However, it is weird that they are requesting this. Thoughts?
  9. Here's a release from KHOU https://www.khou.com/article/news/local/missing/missing-woman-austin-colorado-astros-pitcher/285-11d3c0a7-3583-4be8-8edb-7070dc65d879 Police in Klamath Falls, Oregon, said the two were driving through the town when officers identified the vehicle as stolen and pulled them around 12:37 a.m. Tuesday. Officers arrested Guidry on his outstanding warrant. They said Brenna showed no signs of injury or trauma. Before Tuesday, Austin police said Brenna, 29, had last been seen at 10:20 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at Poodies Hilltop Bar in Spicewood, Texas. Police said she was with Guidry.
  10. Will Stone. Kickoff specialist. Regents school of Austin to UT Austin.
  11. Same architect and interior design, I presume.
  12. Confederacy of Dunces was recommended to me a few years back and I had forgotten about it. Upon a few folks mentioning it here, I gave it a whirl and borrowed the audiobook and listened as I walked. Story is brilliant and the audio was great. The reader, Barrett Whitener, did a wonderful job at the accents, intonation, etc.
  13. By telling them it is reverse rat poison, does it become reverse reverse rat poison? If you tell someone you are surreptitiously trying to motivate them, does it become demotivating?
  14. Warren Sapp's rap sheet precludes him from getting a job at Texas, IMO In 2020 he was fired from NFL Network for solicitation of a prostitute, a charge he pleaded guilty to In the same above incident, he was also charged with 2 counts of assault. I suspect those charges were dropped as part of his plea deal He pleaded guilty to domestic violence of his girlfriend in 2015 In 2015, he was charged with assault an solicitation - the charges were dropped That's all I have the energy to find, but he's not coming to Texas. I do not think Baylor or Penn State would even consider hiring him. But Deion, of course.
  15. Thank you for clarifying! I skimmed over that part.
  16. According to an Oct 2023 article in Investopedia, there are 9730 such folks in the USA. https://www.investopedia.com/new-class-of-global-elite-have-emerged-8357556 It's not clear how much of that is unrealized gains. And, what is the actual process here? In the silly example I gave above, does the said person need to get taxed only on the marginal number above $100mm in unrealized gains? In such a case, his unrealized gains would remain over $100mm. And would the remaining be subject to the same taxation the following year. Seems like it could be a tracking and logistics nighmare.
  17. Dumb question regarding taxation of unrealized gains. Assume someone bought 200 shares of BRK.A in Nov 2000 at $56k per share at a total cost of $11.2mm. Today, those shares are valued at $135mm, and would have an unrealized gain of $124mm. Does that person/owner get taxed on this unrealized gain? Clearly, I am not in the realm of this example or I would know the answer. And, if the owner would have to pay taxes on this unrealized gain, does it not put downward pressure on equities prices?
  18. Google can be your friend. Looks like you'd need to teach 7 credits using the "standard" calculation, but each university can have its own "clock hours per teaching hour" ratio. https://www.trs.texas.gov/Pages/re_employment_eligibility.aspx Employment as an adjunct professor, if the number of clock hours worked per week is 20 or more and the employment is expected to last more than one semester or in fact does continue for more than one semester. To determine the number of clock hours worked per week, employment measured in semester or course hours or credits, instructional units, or any other unit representing class or instructional time is to be converted to clock hours and counted as a minimum of two clock hours for each clock hour of instruction in the classroom or lab. This reflects instructional time as well as preparation, grading, and other time typically associated with one hour of instruction. If the employer has established a greater amount of preparation time for each hour in the classroom or lab, the employer's standard will be used to determine the number of clock hours scheduled for work
  19. Agree @immamac. There is too much inherent value in the company. It's selling below book - which is wild. Random, mediocre fabs are priced above 2x book. Moving material through the fab with external customers will be key for that portion of the business and the recovery. Production of tip of the spear process technology in high volumes/high yields is non-trivial, which is why there are so few players in that space. The product side has seen reductions in market share due to competition from AMD and the Arm players - and MSFT has been aggressive in helping elevate the arm ecosystem. This year, we have QCOM, but next year, expect MediaTek and NVDA to deliver Arm products into the Windows Ecosystem. The performance is subpar, but the Perf/Watt is better. None of this was a surprise. All players have been impacted by NVDA's presence in Data Center / HPC. They've been VERY aggressive in finding ways to map just about every high-thread-count or compute application into GPU. They did it with Crypto in ~2015 and that has since migrated to ASIC. Now it's AI inference and training. We are seeing some inference-focused development in the market (Groq, others) that *could* reduce NVDA's presence a bit. Moreover, as model optimization research improves, the overall compute needed to train and infer yesterday's models could go down by orders of magnitude. Does that result in higher fidelity models or the next "killer app?" Who knows? NVDA's main advantage in AI/HPC today: software ecosystem. AMD and Intel are 1/2-1 generation behind there. The problem being addressed immediately - and the CEO mentioned it in his quarterly report - is that revenues have dropped ~20% since 2021 and staffing has increased by 15%. That's not a good combination and is being addressed by EOY, as per his public statements.
  20. That place is an abomination. Worse yet, it was recently remodeled. I cannot imagine how bad it looked before. Some other yellow (or red) flags: no closeups of any of the exterior amenities (pool, tennis court?) and that two of its major selling features: zoned agriculture and $3.7mm worth of macadamia trees. Regardless: sold
  21. It's hovered around the Aug 8 pricing for the past 2 weeks, giving back another 6% yesterday. Lip Bu Tan, former executive chair and CEO of Cadence (EDA), resigned from the board yesterday, effective immediately. Tan joined in 2022 and was part of the board's M&A committee. https://www.reuters.com/technology/intel-director-lip-bu-tan-is-leaving-chipmakers-board-bloomberg-news-reports-2024-08-22/
  22. What the SSA site says: https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/whileworking.html If you are younger than full retirement age and earn more than the yearly earnings limit, we may reduce your benefit amount. If you are under full retirement age for the entire year, we deduct $1 from your benefit payments for every $2 you earn above the annual limit. For 2024, that limit is $22,320. In the year you reach full retirement age, we deduct $1 in benefits for every $3 you earn above a different limit. In 2024, this limit on your earnings is $59,520. We only count your earnings up to the month before you reach your full retirement age, not your earnings for the entire year.
  23. Just run the numbers, as @immamac said. I looked up my benefits from age 62 to 70 and normalized to $1k per month at age 62. Left columns show age starting SS and monthly $$ based on age started. Matrix on the right shows asset values based on depositing 100% into a fund that yields X%. For the cut-paste example, I chose 5%. You only "fall behind" in this example If you live past 90. If I have the energy, I will share a "blank" spreadsheet for those to try at home. Basic assumptions. 100% deposited into funding generating 5%. 0% taken out.
