  1. I think Brittney Howard at an ACL TV taping next Monday.

A couple weeks ago, my wife was asking why we don't buy some tickets to a taping of ACL.  I knew you could buy tickets, but wasn't sure exactly how to get tickets.  I vaguely remember people waiting in line outside the ACL taping studio back when it was on the UT campus.  Found out that you had to send in a request and then get drawn.  First opportunity was Jelly Roll - I ain't trying to go to no Jelly Roll.  Next up - Brittney Howard.  Sent in my request and learned today that I was selected from more than 4200 entries.

Now we get to show up on Monday at 6:00 to try to get two passes and hopefully get in.  We'll see.

Kung Fu Panda.  I didn't read the books, but the movie trilogy was outstanding.

I also think you have to take in to account going from a trailer to a HUGE restaurant.  There maybe should be some kinda step up in scale but maybe not the huge leap some joints are trying.

Buda EDC offered several hundred thousand in incentives (I've seen $288-512k) for Valentina's to open in that big building.  That sounds like a bunch of money until its not.  I doubt Valentina's made all of the metrics to get all of the incentives.  I wouldn't be surprised if Valentina's hired and staffed more employees than were required just to try to make the requirements.

who else has a full bar that's in the top 50?

If I remember correctly, Heim and Pecan Lodge have full bars. Both top 50 in 2017, downgraded to honorable mention in 2021.

  5. While growing from a food truck to a brick and mortar can be a problem, adding the dinner service seems to be the biggest gamble.  The increase in manpower necessary to go from "until sold out" to 2 meal services is exponential.  Valentina's not only did that, but they also added a bar and increased the size 10x.

It will be interesting to see how LeRoy & Lewis does.  Their model has always been based upon providing high quality, yet cheaper cuts of meat (beef cheeks and now chuck roasts and flat iron).  Rotating the protein special should help as well.  I think they'll be able to pull it off, but that full day service still might be a problem.

Interstellar: did they open in the strip mall?

Yes.  John Bates switched from Noble Pig/Noble Sandwich Co. to InterStellar BBQ in the same space.  They have expanded the dining area, but that's about it.

  7. I loved Valentina's.  Always good at the trailer.  Always good at the Austin FC games.  They struggled from day one when they opened the new, large location in Buda.  I've been to the Buda joint three times.  First time was excellent.  Second time was embarrassing.   Final time was just okay.

  8. The city of Austin is working to ensure that it becomes an all-gender practice.
That's no lie.  I was driving around after eating dinner at Home Slice in Central Austin and commented that sometimes it is almost impossible to determine where the actual car lane is.  I'll hit a cyclists before I hit a curb, though.

For those who know movie production, does this seem like a quick turnaround?

I don't know any thing about movie production, but I do have some experience answering random questions on the internet.  Seems like a quick turnaround to me.

PSA for anybody thinking of a Snow’s run in the coming weeks. They will be closed 4/27, 5/4 and 5/18. I think Kerry’s daughter is getting married one of those weekends and then there’s a town-wide event in Lexington that makes it tough for them to operate as normal. I’m not sure why they’re closed the other weekend.

Would hate to see somebody go all the way there only to find it closed.

Troubadour Festival is on May 18th.  I would love to go, but its in College Station.

  11. There is an easy, yet painful, stretch you can do anytime.   I tried to explain it to @troph once, but it's hard to put into words.  So I'll add a picture.

Start with your bad Achilles calf resting on top of your other knee.  With you calf pressed into your other knee, point your toes up and down 5 times.   Then rotate your foot around in circles 5 times each direction.  Move a couple inches to another location on your calf and repeat.  Keep repeating until you have covered the entire calf.   Make sure you get both inside and outside of your calf.

Anyone else have issues with their Achilles? I feel like my left one could snap at any time. I pretty much always have to wear shoes to keep it from hurting.

Back in my running days, I had ongoing Achilles tendonitis.  I found that calf stretching was the key to recovery and prevention.  I went to a place to get deep tissue massage that used myofascial release.  It hurt like hell, but worked well.  Eventually, I learned ways to stretch my calf on my own to keep it from reoccurring.  Trigger point and night splints are both helpful.

Sleeping can continue to exacerbate the condition because most people sleep with their feet pointed (think lying under the covers on your back) which leads to shortened calf muscles.  If you jump out of bed without stretching the calf a little first, your calf will tug on the Achilles tendon and you start the day with pain.

Google "trigger point calf stretches" and you can find some videos that explain it better than me.

  13. We were down at Texas State for the baseball game and a family day function.  Lunch catered by San Marcos BBQ.

I was really impressed, especially for a catered meal.  Brisket was moist and seasoned well.  Sausage was a perfect - what you would expect from a Luling native who worked in his grandfather's barbecue joint, Chisholm Trail BBQ, as a kid tying sausage rings.  Here's a write up from Daniel Vaughn from a year ago - Texas Monthly article.

I will have to stop at one of their two restaurants and get a fresh plate of barbecue on a future trip down there.

What the hell? I’ll take it!

Yeah.  I apologized for what I said about him a few minutes earlier too.
