No, we should fire the coach after one season.  That's definitely the right move.  Good coaches will be lining up to come here, thrilled to know they'll have one whole fucking season to put their system in place.

Great leaders in any field are sure of their ability and the failure of others has no consequence to their ability to succeed in the same role.

Further, let's flip it around "I'm sure good coaches will be lining up to come here knowing that we are complacent with substandard results and that the athletic department as a whole isn't prioritizing winning and won't demand excellence."

Sarkisian was an abject failure. Getting fired for being an abject failure isn't a red flag to anyone, anywhere.

and continuing to coach up Jaylan Ford, David Gbenda, Luke Brockermeyer, and to a lesser extent Devin Richardson.

How about they remove their fucking heads from their asses and actually play the best players? Note the stats for Brockermeyer and Ford in the graphic above. Brockermeyer 72 tkl 5.5 TFL vs. Ford 53 tkl - 6 TFL.  Why am I noting that? Well, Brockermeyer played right near 500 snaps while Ford played 340 and that number was greatly skewed by him being forced into the rotation with Brockermeyer's injury.

This isn't the only position where that bore out. This defensive staff was terrible at every facet this season but by far the most egregious was having the best players standing on the sideline while a pack of fucking spares was getting fuckstomped on the field.

Perhaps moving Jett Bush here would also solve some of their problems.

One coach that understands the current CFB  landscape and his current roster and two old school meatheads that haven't evolved beyond what they were teaching in the 90s. checks out.

No offense, but if you are looking at this hire as potentially better overall for OU than Riley, you need to take a break, sit the next few months out but working on the lawn or something, and then regroup and come back to try again. It isn't Beamer-bad, but it's not a great hire, it has a ton of risk on it, and the OU program is far worse off today than it was 48 hours ago.

I'm not. What I am saying is that I think there was a 0% chance that Riley was ever going to win a national title at OU and that chance was only getting smaller year-over-year.

Beyond that I simply considered how BV will recruit to attempt to stop the massive bleeding.  With their entire roster in the portal they've got to try to get some of them to stay and perhaps land a few guys in the 2022 class. I do expect BV to have a much more physical football team and I expect them to be better via S&C though. Even if they fucking suck sans Riley.

This isn't Shane Beamer-level good news, but this is fucking awesome. Castiglione trying to catch lightning in the coordinator bottle for a third consecutive time and I don't fucking see it on this one.

Maybe. It's FAR better than Beamer. I guess for me it also depends heavily on the OC and more so the rest of his staff. Looks like he's bringing Lebby on board as his OC, so I think they are going to be pretty solid if unspectacular over there and able to keep a lot of guys that are hitting the portal right now. They are going to improve the S&C side of things because you can't be worse than Wylie. I can see the recruiting sell being "we are getting ready for the SEC. Big boy football. We're going to be more physical than Riley was but we are still going to be innovative on offense (See here example ___Lebby)." They are going to recruit the tough vs. soft angle against Sarkisian/Texas and the innovative side vs. Jimbo/aggy.  it doesn't mean it will work and it doesn't mean that they will be as good as they are under Riley week-to-week but it does remove a ceiling that Riley's org has put on the team in terms of defensive reps and physicality. I think each season they were removed from Stoops that OU was a step further away from winning a title, regardless of the regular season win total - continuing to get further and further removed from being physical and developing guys across the roster.

What I do know with certainty is fuck OU.

The OL pass blocking is generally good, despite a high sack rate. There have been some issues this year with blitz pick up. The blitz issue is attributable to OU rolling out a RS-Fr center and RB blitz pick up issues. The Sooner QBs also have had a tendency to hold the ball forever and leave clean pockets, frustratingly.

Run blocking has regressed, partly due to development and partly due to scheme. A lot of the really good offensive linemen OU's had weren't highly rated recruits but program guys that Bedenbaugh developed. That development basically stopped from the 2018 class on. From that class on, OU's gotten contributions from 2 out of 15 (!) OL recruits. Included in that are 4 top 100 recruits (1 5-star, 9 total 4-stars). So talent acquisition isn't the problem, but several of these presumably highly talented players have gotten ZERO run yet are still in the program. I was hoping that some of the seniors would opt out of the bowl game so we could see what we've got in some of the younger OL in live action.

The GT counter is the Sooners bread and butter play, the play that sets up so much their neat misdirection. The strength of the Sooners from mid 2015 - 2018 was OU could tell you that that play was coming and still get 6 yds off it most of the time. Defenses caught up, the pullers aren't as nimble, and Riley's been slow to vary the play design. OU's success running the ball this year has been with zone blocking schemes. OU hasn't had a back with great wiggle/run-after-contact + long speed since 2017 also so some of those 80 yd runs have now become 30 yd runs.

Murray is terrible as a RB coach and the inability to develop even one RB who can pass block combined with a FR QB holding the ball too long saw clean pockets give up sacks.

We talked about this while it was happening but Riley is a Leach disciple and loves those HUGE OL guys. BB would've never offered a guy like Darrell Simpson in the pre-Riley days. Even with his 5* rating I have doubts about him pursuing Brey Walker in that same class. Just not the kind of OL guy that Bedenbaugh wants. He's always targeted guys with good lateral quickness, hence the strength of their OL in the counter game and the ability to scoop the backside and gain a numbers advantage. It's just two guys not on the same page, imo.

It also matters that Wiley took over for Schmidt. Schmidt is a cockface but knows what he's doing, while Wiley is one of the worst S&C in p5.

  6. NSIAP - ou247 - BB and Grinch ::

    Spoiler

Have been able to confirm that Bill Bedenbaugh and Alex Grinch intend to follow Lincoln Riley to USC at this time.

Don’t be shocked if there isn’t more to follow suite. Just know that right now, unless Grinch or Bedenbaugh are offered a job here with new staff, they are expected to be following Riley to USC.

Agree regarding Harbaugh, but Macks sub .600 record at NC doesn’t really merit much more benefit of the doubt than Sark at this point. Going 9-3 year one helped tho.

    Wut?
Sure, Mack did have a 9-3 year — he also had 3 10 win years there. Ffs, he only had 3 losses in his final 2 seasons at UNC before coming to Texas 2 of those 3 losses were to Bobby Bowden’s FSU juggernaut and the last season he finished 4 in the country. He did that at a basketball school with no football pedigree. That’s fucking worlds better than anything Sarkisian has ever accomplished. The worst of those 4 years is past Sark’s peak and the other 3 stomp his head in.

He has 0, I repeat 0 conference championships in 11 seasons.

Conference? Sarkisian has 0, I repeat 0 division titles. His best ever season as a HC is a shared 2nd-4th in the Pac 12 South, 5th in the Pac overall, 6-3 in conference. That’s his peak. With a loaded USC roster built by Kiffin, Ogre, et al

Thumbing your nose at Harbaugh while cheerleading a natural born loser in Sark is absolute delusion. I don’t love Harbaugh or think he hung the moon but he laps Sark several times over at every stop he’s made.

1-4 in bowl games at Michigan, 1-5 against Ohio state and no big 10 championships! But lets shit on our DC after year one, you sure as fuck don’t respect PK for his 20 years of results. You could cut that hypocrisy with a knife.

PK and Lake being abject failures the further removed they are from Petersen’s orbit shows me that, much like Saban, Petersen was the straw the stirred the drink. Also, as noted, PKs resume isn’t in the same stratosphere.

Could we ever have the patience for the Harbaugh long game? Doubt it.

You mean like we did with Mack Brown?!

We shouldn’t have the patience with Sarkisian because he’s already proven that he’s mediocre - he’s never been anything but mediocre. Harbaugh has proven capable at SD, Stanford, the 49ers, and Michigan. Respect is earned by results. Patience comes with that respect. Mack got it here, if Sark had that kind of history he’d get it but he doesn’t and simply hadn’t earned that level of respect/patience.
