Bookmark this one. Because this isn't a sustainable economy for the next 16 months.
Emphasized quite strongly in the segment on NPR this morning. Look at interest rates -- not just here, but globally. They should be significantly higher....but the economy can't handle it. Which helps us hold off a recession for a while longer....but puts us in a much more precarious position when it hits. Lowering interest rates 3-4% is a good stimulating response to a recession. That's hard to do when the rate is at 2.5% or so.

Here's an idea. White folks, or folks in general, best figure out how to minimize the effects of subconscious or systemic or institutional discrimination because they are about to be the minority. That's not to say that former minorities are going to exact revenge, but because it's subconscious, systemic, or institutional and inevitable unless we figure out how to make it not inevitable.
It would be nice if this could be discussed without so much invective, but rather with an acceptance that this is the human condition and we have to do better.
Quite true.
And....good luck with that. See OP. The strategy here is quite simple, from thoughts like the OP to active, coordinated, and relentless efforts to disenfranchise minority voters -- lay the foundation for an apartheid system, so that even when white folks are the minority, they are firmly in control and on top. Because, you know, after hundreds of years of systematic oppression -- a good portion of which remains ONGOING -- which has ensured that (to go with the baseball analogy) some of those players are undersized, weak, and have little experience or knowledge of the game, NOW the plan is "hey, let's just all step on the field and play ball against each other, fair is fair!"
Not only is their zero interest in minimizing systemic and institutional racism -- there is an active strategy to preserve it. Reason # 6,985 why I have furnished my ledge with comfortable seating.

Since we have shifted to shitty titters, the Crazy Lady has to be mentioned but The Landing Strip (or whatever it's called now) is by far the most repulsive in Austin. I stopped in for some Jameson after being picked up at the airport by a Surlster who shall not be named.
After several drinks, it actually became comical. I had no interest in fat cholas, but Vic would have been in heaven.
I am the reason there’s a titty bar where the Landing Strip is.
See, back in the day, it was the relocated Red Rose. The old Red Rose was on Ben White, but got bought out by TXDOT when they expanded the road. They had the money from that, and wanted to relocate. I was a law clerk at a dinky little firm to make some extra cash while I was in school.
They gave me a list of locations, and told me to look at the regs and restrictions on each location, and recommend one. So I did. And they followed my rec. A few years later, it changed owners and name.
You’re welcome.

Unconscious racism happens with every single skin color. Figured we could ignore that since quite literally every color is just as racist as the next in that regard.
Oh, the “everyone’s racist, so racism doesn’t matter” argument....is there a shitty excuse for racism you WON’T trot out? I haven’t heard the “black people use the N-word, so why can’t I?” argument. You shouldn’t neglect that one, it’s a classic! -
How about another one from the "where the hell does this go" files?
I don't even want to see a picture of what this abomination looks like.
That looks like the menu at the World’s End Pub in Edinburgh....and If you want to know how both those taste, I can tel you, because I’ve had them both. The nachos ain’t bad.I would eat the Haggis Tower in a heartbeat. That being said, not all haggis is great. Love black pudding for breakfast when I can get it. The nachos? Might have to see it before I would try that, but chances are I would try it.
And I LOVE black pudding for breakfast. When we are in the UK last staying an an apartment with a kitchen, i went to Sainsbury’s and picked up he fixins for black pudding and eggs, which my daughter and I had each morning. -
Fucker on MLK will never close.
That HAS to be a money laundering front. -
How many people did Antifa murder in Charlottesville?
By my count it's Fascists 1, Anti-fascists 0.
Don’t forget the synagogue shooter. Don’t forget Dylan Roof. Don’t forget an FBI official testifying just the other day that the bulk of their active terrorize cases are white supremacists. And we can keep going on.
BUT....antifa threw some milkshakes, and punched Andy Ngo. So, it’s not even “both sides” here....obviously, antifa is the greatest threat to human life our country has ever seen. -
He was very clearly physically resisting arrest. Nobody can do that.
See my playbook for a racist cop. Arrest someone for an ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT reason....then, when they do what any sane human being would do - challenge that insanity - then it’s “STOP RESISTING” time!
It all went fucking south when the cop decided to make a completely bullshit arrest. Which was intended to provoke the reaction he got. So he could then arrest that uppity negro for something that would stick.
That’s how it’s done ‘round here, boy.-

Well, I respect your family loyalty, but you must admit that sticking with a name like Traitor McTraitorCommie is going to make people wonder.
I wish I could fucking argue this point....I really do...-

I’ve never deflected from the answer. I simple said it’s not the end all be all. And that the problem is shrinking daily. And shouldn’t be the boiler plate excuse that it is.
ETA: I never answered you, I figured we all knew the answer to your question. I’m not Tahoe ffs.
Nor should it be dismissed. It’s fucking real. And the OP, and you, dismiss it with a fucking hand wave.
Fuck, I deal with people who doubt my loyalty to this country because of my last name (and umm, that’s something that’s gotten WORSE, not better, in recent years). -

And literally true? Have you not seen the numerous studies that show people with black sounding names are less likely to get a job than those with white sounding names and the exact same credentials?like, this is shit that has been studied and proven. Your refusal to acknowledge is quite a bit worse than lazy.
Fucking seriously. I actually posted two examples that have been backed up with data.
Again, I'll just ask this question - take 100 random black kids, 100 random white kids. Which group is MORE likely to, on average, have family connections that can get them a leg-up professionally? Nobody is saying ALL -- I'm sure there's a black kid in that group whose dad has a great network, and can get him a sweet gig. And there's a white kid whose dad is an alcoholic bum who can't help him for shit. But COLLECTIVELY, where are the better odds? Come one, man, you know the fucking answer. And it's an answer that has NOTHING to do with a kid's merit or effort. It has everything to do with a pre-built systemic advantage/disadvantage.
-
Racist cop script 101:
1) Tell the black guy you're going to arrest him for something that is utter and complete bullshit, and everyone knows it.
2) when he dares even say "WTF? Arrested for speeding?", then you say "RESISTING ARREST."
3) the only thing missing here is that he didn't shoot him full of holes. The fact that he was being recorded probably saved the black dude's life.
Power hungry, stubby-dicked, pathetic shitheel excuse for a human being. Not on should he not have a badge, he shouldn't have a fucking license to drive -- that level of immaturity and shitty impulse control has zero place on the roads, or frankly, anywhere but his wooden shack in the woods where he can abuse his wife to his heart's content (odds are, he abuses her now -- see the abuse rate for cops).

No, no, you’re right, none of it has ever been systemic racism.
And none of it is today.
Take 100 randomly selected black kids, and 100 randomly selected white kids, and as a group, they'll end up equally successful! They have all the same opportunities, no difference in impediments, everything is EVEN now!
Care to take that wager, flattie? You know how it will turn out. So, the only question is this: is it primarily because 1) black folks are inherently less able to succeed, or 2) they are starting from a point of fewer advantages, and entering into a society that still has entrenched disadvantages (I mean, I'm sure the wild discrepancy in the rates that drivers are pulled over based on race is just an accounting error, for example). Come on. If you think you're being AT ALL clever....stop.

Fair enough, I should have said without difficulty.
Easily admitted - there’s separate admission requirements based on the color of your skin? Almost certain that falls in favor of pigment blessed individuals, not the other way around.
Easily paid for - Ask the hundreds of thousands of non-black individuals drowning in student debt. Seems like this falls in the “affects everyone” category. I assume there are more white families who paid for school without loans is your angle here?
Easily adjusted to college - wtf does that even mean? The vast majority of ALL college kids are 18-22 and are leaving home for the first time. There are varying degrees of difficulty in academics, determined in large part by the student. Further, there are commuter schools for those that help support family, and HBU that cater to AA students. This has more to do with individual kids than their race, and I don’t see how there can be any advantage gained either way
I mean, you can feel free to ignore the statistics that minority students -- who disproportionately come from poor backgrounds/families that have never had a college grad -- which arises in large part from family history -- which arises in large part from historical conditions -- have a harder time integrating into college and achieving. But the rest of us won't.

In no uncertain terms, the GOP is the party of normalizing racism. It's their fucking MISSION.

Exhibit A:
Schumer's response = way too fucking many words to say that the R's outright lie about wanting to cover pre-existing conditions.
They need to start using the word "lie" straight-up, no more fancy, run-on sentences. Because it's the only way to accurately characterize the blatant lying, but also because so many people need a short soundbite to process what's happening, unfortunately.
This.
"That's a lie. The Republican plan doesn't cover pre-existing conditions. They've never had a plan that does that. The Dems do."

I completely agree.
We think that we are always liberating Paris from the Nazis no matter who we're invading. In our naive view of a world comprised of good guys and bad guys, we're never the bad guys at the start. It takes a few photos of slaughtered villagers, blown-up children, or drone-attacked weddings before any of us even get the idea.
But we don't mean to kill civilians! The dead and their survivors don't care. They don't care because it doesn't matter.
The hell of it is....we at least used to TRY.
My Lai was a scandal. Obama took (justified criticism) for his use of drone attacks. And, goddamit, we ARE the country that helped liberate Paris and lead the Berlin Airlift.
But now.....child separation and kid cages with no basis sanitation isn't a scandal....it's fucking CELEBRATED. It's "making America great again!" Our commander in chief casually says he could kill 10 million people, but through his benificence (for today, at least), he chooses not to. Our leadership is running backwards to old-fashioned racism and white supremacy as fast as it can. Etc. etc.
The world is an evolving story. The story is complex, and every actor's actions are often ambiguous (including ours, historically). But here, there is no doubt - in this particular chapter, we are the villain. We are the USA, and we ARE the bad guy.

I still think a large part of where we are comes from the bastardized idea of American Exceptionalism.
"American Exceptionalism" is idiocy. It's nothing but a shield against any introspection or improvement.
It's as if I practiced "Brisket Physical Perfectionism" -- I'm GORGEOUS. There's not a SINGLE THING ABOUT ME THAT'S NOT THE MOST PERFECT EVER. And if you criticize me, you're just a hater, and you should go back where you came from or something.*
* All of which shields Brisket from trying to lose 50 lbs, dressing better, finally getting a decent haircut, realizing he's getting older so he ought to take care of his skin, too, etc. Leaving Brisket to be the plain-looking fella that he ACTUALLY is. And what's worse, it's a recipe for Brisket to get even uglier as time goes by.
America is just getting shittier, and it's in no small part because people who insist that we're fucking perfect, so how dare we actually look critically at ourselves to see how we can improve?

FYI. The “elevated” threat sign is actually the NTSA rating created after 911. While on paper elevated yellow is the medium level, it actually has never been below that rating. The sign is basically saying we are at the lowest risk of a terroristic possible.
I’m actually surprised you haven’t seen it before, it’s posted around most secured faculties across the United States.
Of that, I was actually unaware. I do go in and out of federal facilities with some frequency, but they're the kind of places that have a portrait of the president in the lobby, not the kind of places that posts the terror threat level (although I have never understood the insane amount of security you have to go through to get into an EPA building). I mean, nevermind that the whole terror threat level thing is absurd. We're supposed to be on high alert when the level goes to magenta, or puce, or something like that, right?

Her "personality" -- a pretty broad category there, but let's acknowledge that it was a negative. That meant that while folks may have "approved" of her, that approval was fragile. Thus, when the hits to her reputation came, they broke right through that fragile approval.
Whereas a candidate who is "likable" can better handle hits to his/her reputation.
Her crappiness as a person made her vulnerable. The other side exploited that vulnerability. And then served us a shit sandwich.
